2002 Audi S4 Preview summaryImage

The 2002 Audi S4 is unchanged from the previous year. This sports performer is cleverly hidden beneath the classic, sophisticated, unpretentious trappings of an Audi four-door sedan or Avant wagon. Superficially, it looks like a practical, yet luxurious family car. The S4 Avant offers lots of cargo capacity, with fold-down rear seats A leather and wood interior screams elegance and style.

But don't be fooled. By day a mild-mannered commuter, at night and on weekends the S4 turns into The Flash. Equipped with a sports-tuned lightweight suspension, strong shocks and brakes, the 2002 S4 features a 2.7-liter biturbo, 250-hp V6 engine. Though you can get it with a 5-speed Tiptronic auto/manual transmission, most drivers recommend the standard 6-speed manual for maximum low-end torque performance and driving fun. In terms of safety, ABS brakes, electronic stability, dual front and side curtain airbags, and special sports seats with side bolsters keep you secure. The 2002 S4 is really an all-season/all climates sports sedan/wagon, because it features quattro all-wheel drive, which distributes power to the wheels that need it most. The result is a solid, stable, confident ride that rivals most SUVs in terms of performance.

Not surprisingly, drivers call the S4 a rocket. They love its amazing power and low-end torque. That and the twin turbos give a more responsive powertrain with very little turbo lag. Expert steering and handling are also mentioned. The luxurious interior and comfortable leather seats don't disappoint. Some drivers dislike the placement of the cruise control on the steering wheel and the useless location of the cupholders. They would like memory seats to be offered and don't like the "notchy" shifter which can be unresponsive. Drivers also suggest replacing the 17-inch tires with 18-inch ones. The usual complaint about unhelpful Audi dealers is mentioend with the S4 as well.

This car has been impeccably maintained, so maintenance has been inexpensive to this point. It's extremely satisfying to pull up next to a C6 corvette and blow their doors off and then see the stupefied look on their face when they catch back up.Jul 11, 2013

Great car, fast as all sin. The Quattro is killer in bad weather - can't go back to 2wd. Styling is conservative yet classy, and its aged well - still looks sharp for a car designed in the early 90's Speaking of the 90's, the build quality is about on par from what you'd expect from something designed 15 years ago. Some things are over engineered, and in typical German fashion, some things are totally under engineered. Braided black hoses anyone? Cost of ownership is fairly high, if you don't maintain it, it will bankrupt you. Nip problems in the ass before they get expensive. That said, my particular car seems to be better than most, hardly any issues in 3+ years of ownership. Fun factor, well, if kicking the rear out all day long is your kinda thing, get a BMW or Mustang, but if being a traffic light hero tickles you pink, this car delivers. Thanks to Quattro, a short geared 6spd and a ass load of low end torque (like 380lb/ft @ 2500rpm), nothing will beat you across an intersection. You shoot across an intersection from a dead-stop in probably 3-4 seconds, smoking anyone in the lane next to you, and remain under the speed limit - 1st-2nd gears to redline, pop her gently into 6th and go about your day :) Jan 01, 2010
