The 2001 Ford Ranger continued its reign as the hottest selling compact pickup truck in the US. An exterior redesign for the '01 model year gave the new Ranger a more intimidating appearance, with a big-shouldered front end and sturdy new side flares. This incarnation of the Ranger looked a lot closer to its roots in farm and ranch, borrowing design cues from the F-150.
Three trims were available for the '01 Ranger: XL, XLT, and the new Edge trimline. The Edge trim, a sporty monochrome styling aimed at younger drivers, featured interior and exterior touches that mirrored some of the ways tuners had customized earlier Rangers. XL, the entry-level trim for the 2001 Ranger, offered plenty of comfort; XLT added some interior touches, as well as incorporating options like power windows and mirrors. Bodystyles available were Flareside and Styleside; cab configurations offered were two-door Regular Cab, and two- and four-door extended cab SuperCab.
Shipped with a 2.3 liter inline-4 engine, the '01 Ford Ranger offered two attractive upgrade options for drivers seeking more muscle under the hood: a 3.0 liter V-6 or a new single overhead cam 4.0 liter V6 delivering 207 horsepower and plenty of torque. Two-wheel and four-wheel drive options were available; Ford's proprietary part-time four-wheel drive system provided the flexibility to meet varying road conditions.

What owners say
"Overall, owners of the 2001 Ford Ranger generally appreciate its decent power, compact size, and good handling. Many drivers enjoy its versatility, making it a solid daily driver for various tasks. However, some owners note that the gas mileage is not great, and the truck can feel small, particularly for passenger space. Issues with the build quality and design flaws have been mentioned as well."
The truck was in great shape considering its age. It’s exactly what we were looking for to tow a small camper.

March 18, 2025We've loved this truck from day one. Plenty of room for storage on short or long trips, to work and back, etc. Comfortable driving with cruise and efficient with a 5 speed. No pesky and expensive window motors either! I like it a lot. It does have a little bit of a blind spot with the B pillar being so big but isn't an issue. Sold July '12
April 2, 2012I love how this truck looks. It has a big truck look in a small package. This truck handles amazingly well considering it is a truck. This truck is very fun to drive and it definitely turns heads. You can do a lot of customization to one of these trucks. They are tough little trucks.
September 8, 2008the truck runs and looks great
December 30, 20072001 Ford Ranger.Edge Edition.2WD Rear Wheel Drive.Extendend Cab With Truck Cap.V6 4.0 L (245 in).Automatic Transmisson. Since Owning It, I've Converted All My Fluids To Synthetic, K&N Cold Air Intake, Plugs, Wires, Motorvac (A Complete Fuel System Cleaning). Truck Has Never Let Me Down And Has Towed Whatever I've Trown In The Back Of It With No Problem.
August 25, 2012Great truck all around. Decent power, very stylish out side. The 4.0l V6 hasn't given me any problems at all. I love the edge interior with the vinyl floors and seats. Very easy to clean up. However my only true gripes about the truck would have to be the gas mileage and how big the bed is with it being a stepside and the fact that the Edge, 4x4, 4.0l ranger (2001) is extremely hard to find performance parts and lift kits for!
September 9, 2009I love the truck, but I am startimg to see where the previous owner didn't much care about maintenance Performance is good, it accelerates well, and handles really good. Build quality is very solid. I have hit a desk in the middle of the freeway at 80 mph and only broke the grill, rear ended a couple of cars, and there is no visible damage from these. Appearance is starting to wan due to the previous owner not really giving a crap
August 20, 2008it hauls, it races, it handles... with a 2/3 drop and upgraded antiroll bars i can take the corners with the best of them... and since i put in limited slip i can plant the power from the big 4.0l sohc... which has a roush intake on it... in all aspects it looks stock but far from it....
