Debuting this year is the 2000 Kia Spectra GS, a hatchback that looks like a sedan, but offers a bigger trunk than you'll find in most compact cars. It is powered by a 1.8-liter, 125-hp DOHC I4 engine and standard 5-speed manual transmission. An optional 4-speed automatic is also available. As the base model, the 2000 Spectra GS doesn't offer much except a low sticker price. Dual front airbags, intermittent wipers, 14-inch tires, rear defogger, a tachometer, a radio/cassette player, and power steering are about all you get.
Options add on ABS brakes, keyless entry, power windows and locks, air conditioning, and a CD player. A rear spoiler can also be added, along with a rear window wiper. These options bring the GS up to par with the GSX, packing in a lot of good features at an affordable price. Highlights for owners include the big trunk (11.6 cubic feet), the sporty look, the overall handling, and the gas mileage, which is a respectable 23/30 mpg. However, there are many mechanical issues with the 2000 Spectra GS, including tire wear. Plastic materials on the inside break easily and the exterior shows scratches and dings.

A sportier look and more standard equipment distinguishes the 2000 Kia Spectra GSX from the base model GS. It shares the same powertrain -- a 1.8-liter, 125-hp DOHC I4 and choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. On the outside, it gets side sill extensions, air dams in the front and back, and a rear spoiler. Its 14-inch wheels spoked alloys.
Inside, the seats are covered in sports cloth upholstery, and it adds air conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, and power windows and locks. Dual front airbags, a tachometer, rear defrost, and intermittent wipers round out the features. Extras tack on a CD changer, cruise control, power mirrors, and remote entry. A rear wiper can also be added. There are no optional side impact airbags, but ABS is offered. Owners of the 2000 Kia Spectra GSX like the style and the list of features you get at an affordable price. Handling and gas economy are other highlights. Cheap breakable plastic parts are a disappointment, and the early Spectras had a lot of mechanical problems. Rear legroom is cramped.
