Debuting this year is the 2000 Kia Spectra GS, a hatchback that looks like a sedan, but offers a bigger trunk than you'll find in most compact cars. It is powered by a 1.8-liter, 125-hp DOHC I4 engine and standard 5-speed manual transmission. An optional 4-speed automatic is also available. As the base model, the 2000 Spectra GS doesn't offer much except a low sticker price. Dual front airbags, intermittent wipers, 14-inch tires, rear defogger, a tachometer, a radio/cassette player, and power steering are about all you get.
Options add on ABS brakes, keyless entry, power windows and locks, air conditioning, and a CD player. A rear spoiler can also be added, along with a rear window wiper. These options bring the GS up to par with the GSX, packing in a lot of good features at an affordable price. Highlights for owners include the big trunk (11.6 cubic feet), the sporty look, the overall handling, and the gas mileage, which is a respectable 23/30 mpg. However, there are many mechanical issues with the 2000 Spectra GS, including tire wear. Plastic materials on the inside break easily and the exterior shows scratches and dings.
