Mercedes-Benz dropped a brand-new 5.0-liter V8 engine into the 1999 SL500. The end result was a whopping 302 horsepower rating for a classic sports roadster.
The car also got some cosmetic upgrades that left it "oozing with style." Those changes included new side-view mirrors from the SLK, body-colored door handles and new side molding, new taillights, new exterior colors, a new instrument panel, new shifter and shift gate and a new four-spoke steering wheel.
The car got "surprisingly good gas mileage," but some owners felt the workmanship and materials used in building the SL500 weren't up to snuff.

The 1999 Mercedes-Benz SL600 was the German car maker's premier, two-seat convertible. The car boasted a V12 engine that made 389 horsepower.
The 1999 version was revised internally from the 1998 model year. Among the changes were the addition of 17-inch wheels as a standard feature and the exterior trim was changed to match the color of the body.
The convertible top was lined but not padded. That led to some driver complaints as it led to little insulation against noise and heat.
