Like it's four-door cousing, the 1997 Neon 2-door STD Coupe is the base model coupe in the Neon line. As such, this compact comes with very basic standard features, but is a great economical personal car, good for city commutes. It carries the 2.0-liter, 132-hp I4 engine with 5-speed manual transmission. Power brakes and steering, intermittent wipers, and dual front airbags are all standard.
There are plenty of options to choose from, including the twin-cam 2.0 engine rated at 150-hp and a 3-speed auto tran. In terms of extra features, you can add air conditioning, ABS brakes, leather trim, tilt steering, and a sporty Competition package (that includes sports suspension, badging, and the twin cam 2.0). Owner say it was pretty fun and speedy to drive, and very economical in terms of gas mileage. They also liked the handling. It was also roomier than most compacts because of its cab forward design. Some say there were too many repairs, including poor window seals that let a lot of noise in.

You get what you pay for, and since you don't pay much for the 1997 Neon STD base model, you don't get much. The 1997 Neon STD gains intermittent wipers and power steering as standard features this year, in addition to the already standard cloth seats, power brakes, and dual front airbags. Though the interior is fairly bare-bones, the 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder, 132-hp engine is surprisingly peppy, especially with the standard 5-speed manual transmission. A 3-speed is optional, as are a host of features such as air conditioning, a tachometer, tilt steering wheel, and a Competition Package, which offered a twin-cam 2.0 I4 at 150-hp.
The Neon always gets praise for its great fuel economy, good durable engine, responsive acceleration, and excellent handling. Owner say it is fun to drive and pretty fast. The back seat and trunk are roomy for a compact. But the Neon also gets criticism for head gasket problems, excessive wind noise, peeling paint, and a cheap-looking interior.

The 1997 Dodge Neon Highline Coupe was the next step up in coupe models and added a few more standard features for a little more money. Like the base coupe, it came standard with a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder, 132-hp engine and 5-speed manual transmission, but you had the option of upgrading to the twin-cam, 150-hp version of this engine and a 3-speed auto tran. In addition to the base features, the 1997 Highline Coupe added tinted glass, rear defrost, air conditioning, a radio, and remote trunk release.
Options included ABS brakes, power sunroof, power windows and locks, cruise control and remote entry. An integrated child seat was also offered. Drivers say the 1997 Neon Highline Coupe was an energetic car, with decent pickup and speed, and a roomy cabin and trunk. It handles nicely, with a good turn ratio. It is fun to drive and economical. Complaints focus on poor window seals, head gasket problems, and a plain interior.

The 1997 Dodge Neon Highline sedan is a four-door, four-seater economy car whose engine gives you surprisingly good bang for the buck. It comes standard with a single-cam 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder, 132-hp engine and 5-speed manual transmission (or 3-speed auto tran option), but can be had with the more powerful twin-cam 2.0 at 150hp. Standard features above and beyond the base sedan include tinted glass, air conditioning, rear defrost, and a remote trunk release. There are lots of extras, like cruise control, keyless entry, power sunroof, power windows and locks, CD changer, and 4-wheel ABS brakes.
Overall, drivers are impressed with the 1997 Neon Highline's engine power and performance. The car handles well and easily, and the interior, thanks to Neon's cab-forward design, is roomy for a compact. Downsides are poor window seals that let in road noise, use of cheap materials inside, and the ever-present head gasket problems that plague the Dodge Neon.

The 1997 Dodge Neon Sport Coupe was pretty similar to the four-door Sport sedan in terms of performance parts and interior features. It was basically a sportier looking and performing Highline Coupe. Equipped with the 2.0-liter, 132-hp I4 standard engine, it could be upgraded to the twin-cam, 150-hp 2.0 engine with 5-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission. In addition to the standard dual front airbags, power brakes and steering, air conditioning, and intermittent wipers, fog lights and a rear spoiler were offered.
Lots of options could be purchased, such as ABS brakes, power sunroof, integrated child seat, power windows and locks, cruise control, and remote entry. The 1997 Neon Sport is fun to drive and surprisingly fast, according to drivers. It is also easy on the gas, making it an appealing car to first time buyers or those on a budget. Owners like the roomy cabin and trunk as well. Downsides are head gasket problems and a tendency toward peeling paint.

The top-of-the-line sedan in the Neon lineup, the 1997 Dodge Neon Sport sedan presents a sportier image than the base and Highline models. Standard engine is the single-cam 2.0, 132-hp I4, but the Neon moves best with the twin-cam version of this engine at 150-hp. A 5-speed stick is standard and 3-speed auto tran optional. Some of the "sport" features include fog lights, a rear spoiler, and special sports badging. This is in addition to the dual front airbags, air conditioning, radio, and intermittent wipers that are standard on the Highline. Options are identical to those on the Highline sedan, including power sunroof, tachometer, tilt steering, cruise control, and power windows and locks.
Great gas mileage and an inexpensive pricetag are big selling points for the 1997 Neon Sport sedan. So are its great performance and smooth handling. Owners say it's fun to drive and a comfortable comnmuter car. Parts are easy to come by for those looking to modify their Neons. Complaints focus on how noisy the car is and the pesky head gasket problems.
