1994 Pontiac Grand Am Overview

Still at the head of the Pontiac pack, the 1994 Grand Am is a mid-size or compact car, depending on your perspective, available as a coupe or sedan. In 1994, the Grand Am gets standard driver's side airbags. It also gets a new V6 engine.

The SE still comes standard with a 2.3 SOHC, 115-hp Quad 4, while the 2.3 DOHC, 175-hp Quad 4 is standard on the GT and optional for the SE. The optional V6 engine for the GT is now a 3.1-liter, 155-hp V6. It comes only with a new 4-speed automatic transmission, which is optional on the I4 engines (a 5-speed manual is standard). Other than that, few changes were made to the features. The GT comes with a sportier suspension and the coupe can be topped off with a rear spoiler. Other common add-ons include a sunroof, power driver's seat, and cruise control.

General consensus seems to be that the Quad 4 engines are very unreliable and cause a lot of mechanical headaches. Other minor complaints point out that the engine is hard to reach, making it difficult to work on, and the cupholder design needs to be reworked. Overall, the 1994 Grand Am is Pontiac's top seller because owners love its sporty handling, the V6 power, and the overall fun driving experience. The engine is peppy, with great acceleration power and decent fuel economy. The interior is roomy and comfortable, and owners say their Grand Ams seem to last forever, even with all the repair problems.
