New colors and a standard mp3 player in the GT trims are what's new for the 2004 Pontiac Grand Am. The SE, SE1, and SE2 trims come in sedan only, featuring either the Ecotec 2.2-liter, 140-hp I4 engine coupled with a standard 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic, or the 3.4-liter, 170-hp V6. The V6 engine only comes with an automatic transmission. The GT and GT1 can be had as a coupe or sedan with a Ram Air version of the V6 rated at 175-hp. The SE2 sedan is more luxury oriented, with many more standard features, while the GT models are focused on performance, with bigger tires, anti-sway bars, rear spoiler, and a stiffer and lower suspension.
There is only one more year left for the 2004 Grand Am, and some owners say good riddance. The Grand Am has been riddled with repair problems, though not as many with this current generation. Most of these repairs have to do with the window regulator and the brakes. Drivers also say the seats are uncomfortable, the car is hard to get in and out of, and the trunk opening is too small. Cheap plastic materials spoil the overall sporty image, and most would like a manual transmission with the V6. On the plus side, everyone likes the Grand Am's looks, which are much sportier than the actual performance. Engine power and acceleration are good, as is the handling. Many owners say it is fun to drive on the highway, and gets good gas mileage even in the city.

I like the power and handling, also has good gas mileage and spacious interior if there are only 5 small people. Only room for 1 larger person and a carseat in the back if you have children. All around still a good reliable car!Jun 29, 2014

The car delivers power at low and high speed while maintaining strong fuel economy (~30 mpg). I always felt safe as the power steering and brakes are quite responsive. The car required only basic maintenance and breaks the American auto stereotype of expensive to maintain.Oct 21, 2013

I bought this car when I was barely 21, I had literally one day to make a purchase and I bought the only car in my price range. I don't know anyone who sings the praises of Pontiac but this car has lasted quite a while with very few problems. I have driven it across a big chunk of the country four times so I feel as though I have bonded well with it although I cannot honestly say I would buy another one (I miss Hondas which are my true love). I liked everything about the car. Stereo sounds good for factory stereo. It has good get up and go engine. It rides real smooth on the road and there is a lot of leg room for the people in the back seat.Apr 13, 2013

I love this car. Its special cuz my dad bought it for me, plus its my first car and has gotten me through a lot of crap. Its really fun to drive, and with maintenance the car has had zero problems. All the extra costs have been to to extenuating factors, not the car itself. It does great in snow provided the BACK tires are not initially involved.....such as backing into a snow drift. good engine and drivability wise, bad accessory wise. Replaced 3 window regulators, and air conditioning compressor is out. Looks Very nice on the outside, have gotten many complements. Has a very nice sound system inside of it. has good gas mileage and good power for a sedan.Sep 17, 2010

Decent car for the price; pretty basic..doesnt have all the extra that you wouldnt need or want to pay for. Basic maintenance costs but pretty easy to fix for the most part. Gas mileage with the V-6 was good. Pretty normal driving car..steering it a little stiff.Jan 08, 2010

It's a real monster when it gets moving. The acceleration blows most other GM cars
out of the water. There is some detailing work that was done on the sides and
back. The rims are stock Pontiac, but are just beautiful. Although it's not a manual

I really enjoy my Grand Am. I have put a lot of miles on it but have not had to make any major repairs, all repairs have been from normal maintenance.I enjoy driving it, it is a V6 so it acceerates very well and it also brakes and handles well.Dec 07, 2008

This 4 cylinder engine is much more powerful than any V6 I've ever driven.
Needs very little maintence in its first years - just the basics (oil changes, air filter, etc).
Updated from the 1994 version: wipers have more speeds, including a variable and the possibility of running once without turning them on and power windows.Aug 26, 2008

Amazing torque...but not too powerful for the front wheel drive system. Interior is lacking compaired to most modern cars. So beautiful in the corners though, even when the back wheels slip out from behind you. All it takes is a little skill and a flick of the wrist to bring you back from the pearly gates.Aug 09, 2008
