1991 Mazda MX-6 Preview summaryImage

Mazda's MX-6 sport coupe was available in four versions for 1991. The entry-level DX and mid-level LX trim packages, as well as an upscale LE trim package, came with a 2.2-liter inline four-cylinder engine that produced 110 horsepower. For a high-performance GT trim package, Mazda dropped a 145-horsepower, turbocharged version of the 2.2-liter four-cyclinder engine under the hood. (The four-wheel-steering version of the GT, called the Turbo 4WS, was dropped from the lineup for 1991.) Standard features for the MX-6 included power brakes, power steering, a tilt steering wheel, a rear window defroster, and an AM/FM/cassette stereo system. The LX added power windows, power door locks, cruise control, and power exterior mirrors, while the GT added fog lights, alloy wheels, and a premium audio system. The upscale LE (leather edition) version came with leather upholstery, air conditioning, and a sunroof. Drivers liked the MX-6 for its value, durability, handling, reliability, styling, and fuel economy (although this final point probably didn't apply to the GT turbocharged model). On the downside, drivers noted that replacements parts could be difficult to find, and many noted that they would have liked a smoother-shifting transmission in the car.

What a great car this was, I bought it from the original owner with 78K miles. I went for two years at 15psi of boost, pre-tuned chip, stock everything else. Then the transmission went out. I ended up selling the car, but the next owner replaced the tranny and is still boosting 15lbs, more mods, and 148K miles now on the car. Never needed anything else. Fantastic little cars, low 14s from stock turbo. Will own one again if I ever find another low mile car.Mar 14, 2008
