A jazzy Sport styling package was introduced for the 1991 Ford Aerostar. Available on the XL and XLT trims, the Sport package featured alloy wheels and silver-tone body accents. Other trim and appearance choices included the two-toned Eddie Bauer trim and a range of classic colors (burgundy, blue, silver, forest) on the standard model. The Extended bodystyle, which had debuted in the previous model year, was a popular choice for the '91 Aerostar: this option provided almost 30 additional cubic feet of cargo volume, for a roomy 170 cubic feet of carrying capacity.
The 1991 Aerostar came standard with rear-wheel drive; all-wheel drive was available as an optional upgrade. The standard engine on the '91 Ford Aerostar was a 145-horsepower Vulcan V6; buyers could upgrade to the 155 horsepower Cologne V6, which put out a solid 230 lb.-ft. of torque. Fuel efficiency was surprisingly good for a midsize minivan; EPA ratings were 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway.
Nobody would be likely to confuse the Aerostar for a performance sports vehicle, even with the Sport package's exterior touches. The Aerostar was popular with suburban soccer moms, though, and the Extended bodystyle was a favorite of tradespeople (especially carpenters), antique dealers, and dog lovers. Conversions for wheelchair users and other people with disabilities were also another market niche to which the Aerostar appealed.
Most of all, the Aerostar sold on its rugged, sturdy presentation, its cargo and passenger capacity, and its relatively affordable price. Buyers overlooked a sometimes stiff suspension and truck-like steering in favor of its durability and toughness.

5th Aerostar in the family. This one's 23 years old but has no rust and just over 100,000 miles. First shorty 2wd. Thought it might be poor in the snow but drives well even with crappy all season tires. cavernous, square cargo compartment. Super comfortable front captains. Like the floor shifter. Don't regret buying this one but it will probably be my last.Dec 13, 2013

The overall performance is pretty decent. It accelerates faster than the average mini van. It has Ford power, but since it is a mini van,you lose handling capabilities at higher speeds due to the weight distribution and tends to have drift issues on the highway. If you get semi's going by faster than you, they tend to give you mega drift and drag. The maintenance costs are average. We get better than average gas mileage with the tornado installed into the intake box. have had a few squeak and rattle issues that were simple to fix, just tighten the screws on the interior. It isn't a sports car, so it's not gorgeous. The interior and exterior have sleeker lines than the other mini vans, but it also has more head and leg room, plus you can also put 100 lbs of cargo on the roof racks. With the hi-jacker air shocks in the rear it gets a sportier look and is easily adjusted with the air pump.Dec 24, 2011

Great little beast, wouldnt go faster than 97 mph but would give all she had to get there, even if that included spinning the tires into 3rd gear. Also the only minivan I've ever known that had only RWD and a hand e-brake, which, as you can see from the picture, came in handy a few times haha. Other than the fact that it was a novelty to see a minivan do what I could make it do so I got attention, it is a piece of junk...Aug 18, 2010

Ford is quality - I can fit almost anything in it. Very reliable, I did have to have work done on it, but all cars need work at some time. I wish Ford would have made a better transmission - the A4LD or whatever is junk - had mine rebuilt. I love Ford full size trucks and vans - this is all I would buy other than a Pontiac car.Jun 16, 2009

My 1991 Ford Aerostar Mini-van was given to me by my father. It was used, but in very good condition. I have driven it for 3 days now. I really like that when driving it, you feel high up and have an okay view of other drivers and the things around you. This may sound stupid, but the thing that drives me most crazy is that I HATE the blinkers, and how long it takes to come on. There is literally a 2 second wait from the time you initiate the blinker until it comes on. I really don't know why it bothers me so much, but it is extremely annoying. Otherwise, I really like the interior; I think that it is designed with families in mind. The rear seats are very easy to move and the rear air is really actually for the rear area of the vehicle. On other reviews, people say that they don't like the way that it rides, but I feel that ride delivered by my Aerostar is exceptional for a mini-van. I really have, so far, enjoyed driving it.Feb 24, 2008

I had one about 15 years ago and I loved it...mine was a 5 speed..I just bought this one for $400, I think I did ok...just needs cv joint, I think and an ignition. And CLEANED! But it seems to be pretty sound.Apr 21, 2007
