Not much change was made for the 1986 Ford Thunderbird model year. There were a few minor exterior tweaks, most notably the addition of a third brake light. The most significant change was under the hood, with the 5.0 liter V-8 engine getting the added power of fuel injection. The entry-level V-6 engine and the Turbo Coupe’s innovative turbocharged four-cylinder remained the same for the '86 Thunderbird.
Trim offerings were the same as the previous year's, with the Heritage, FILA, Elan, and Turbo Coupe available. The interior was stylish, with a European racing feel. Ford hit a good note with its 'Aero Bird' generation: the look and feel combined the sexiness and zip of a classic sport performance car with the plush comfort of a luxury sedan. The '86 Ford Thunderbird had enough muscle to zip around highways and streets, but was streamlined enough not to be a gas guzzler: fuel economy was estimated at 24-30 mpg highway, depending on engine and model.
The 1986 Thunderbird is a good buy, if you can find one out there. Often overlooked in the hoopla that surrounded some of the following year's innovations, the '86 T-Bird is a solid performer loved by tuners and project-car junkies alike.

I'm having trouble finding weather stripping, and some body and trim parts. Front grill and hood got beat up sitting in a parking lot. Plus the upper trim above the windshield. I really want to get her fixed back up, the car came from Florida and is in very good shape otherwise. 91k orignal miles.Dec 22, 2013

If you take care of your '86 thunderbird, and put a little work into it, it can evolve into the best car you'll ever own. I split the exhaust from the manifold and turned it into dual exhaust--along with servicing the engine regularly and keeping the tires in good shape, I get 20 mpg in the city and 25mpg on the highway. My car has 167,000 miles and still going strong. It was my first car, and I plan to restore it and treat it as well as it has treated me.Jun 12, 2012

I like everything about this car except that it didn't come equipped with an intercooler. The car has the perfect size and shape for someone wanting a sporty "family" car. the turbo powered five speed has the feel that makes you want to go faster-and it will. May 13, 2011

well i have had this car for about a year now, i love the power the 302 puts out without the everyday sight of a mustang. the handleing on this car is a little tough to get used to, but as far as the size and wight goes its the best its gona get. ive pushed my thunderbird to 135 without any performence upgrades. overall its a fun car with no lack of power or appearance.Dec 05, 2010

Again borrowed pic.I had regular steel rims on mine, but the colour is right. The first couple of months I had this car were great.Barely 7 years old. Then came the 4 starter change-outs. then the air pump went. Then the mini cats on the Y-pipe exhaust clogged up. Then the cat itself got clogged. Then one day, **POOF** white smoke out the tail pipe. The head gasket blew out. Every other month there was always something with this car. I did like the looks of the car, course that just about as far as it went.Jul 22, 2010

My first car...5.0 ltr V8 had decent torque from down low but became very anemic once it wound up past 4k rpm...got me through LSU with no mechanical woes, but electrical issues seemed to pop up every other dayNov 28, 2009

All I can Remember about this car was it was fast..I got to drive while I had my learners permit and coming back from Niagara Falls Cruisin at 120+ while my Mom, sister and brother were all asleep and a bad accident on the 401 was gruesome......Feb 09, 2009

A big comfy car that felt like a smaller sports car. 100+foot burnout with the 5.0 V-8 and only 60000K on it, 4 speed auto/overdrive, fully loaded. Gas pig if you are hard on the gas, but good on the hwy. Good reliability, but bad for rustOct 25, 2008

I used to own this car. It was a while back, but I still remember it clearly. VERY FAST!. I remember once my tires chirped in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. It was a 4 cylinder turbo charged engine. It was just as fast as the V8 version. It was nice and roomy on the inside and muscular looking on the outside.Oct 03, 2008

I got my T'bird in 1990 for 5K and it was in showroom condition. It has about 42K miles
on it and I haven't had to do any major repairs on it other than the usual kinds (breaks,
ect.)
It still performs great and the pick-up is tremendous, this car literally runs out of the
gate.
Great handling, comfortable, and good on gas, even with the prices today.
I've gotten it banged up a bit, and she isn't as pretty as she was, but neither am I, so who
cares? Only lately she developed an oil leak that I found out is the main seal and I was told
it 's a design flaw and I'll have trouble finding someone to fix it, but as long as it holds I
could get another 30K miles. Not bad for a 22 year old car.Jun 17, 2008

This is the most comfortable car I've ever driven, although she has some problems, they're all age-related (rusted frame, floor and rocker panels)Jun 07, 2008

She died at 330,000 miles at no fault of her own. It was me the driver that caused her death. She still runs, but it is not safe to drive her with a large chunk missing from the frame. I was the second owner and did a lot of work on her over the years. Eight years of daily driving put 190,000 on her. She was a very good car and I miss her everyday. I want another 1986 tbird.Feb 04, 2007
I recently ran across this 1986 "Talladega T Bird" and couldn't resist... they told me it was a limited edition and that only around 2000 were made. I've never seen or heard of one, does anyone have any info on this car? thank you
My '66 Ford Thunderbird RH side main door window (new) motor raises the window rapidly, but when it hits the top of the travel will hit the stops hard and jam. The motor wont then move the window down. What is the fix/adjustment for this condition?
