All Around Good Car. — It was an old car, it drove great though. It was rust colored, it had a lot of miles on it. I enjoyed this car immensley, it got me through a lot. This car was very fun to drive and every one else though so too.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: It was fast, for me anyway.

Cons: it was to old.

Loved this car! J model w/ the 400/4bl. The top rated speed was 146, but I’m confident that I surpassed that on the Mississippi interstate while being chased by a cowl hooded ‘68 Mustang who was harassing me but he couldn’t keep up when I punched it. When a good city block behind me, he blew his motor. Me and my 3 buddies laughed all the way back to Illinois. Great looking, great driving car! Bought it new in December ‘72, and traded for a ‘74 Grand Am less than 2 years into it because I was hit 4 times. Bad luck! Loved the Grand Am, but it was slower. I still have the Framed Picture of the Grand Prix off the dealers wall. Burgundy w/ a Landau top and burgundy interior and rally wheels. Loved it and hated giving it up!

  • Would Buy
Power Ranked 1974 Pontiac Grand Am worse.
"Same motor, but the GP had a 4bl carburetor vs the 2bl carb in the GA. And the ‘74 had more pollution controls added."
Handling Ranked 1974 Pontiac Grand Am worse.
"Close again, but I think the Grand Am was toned down a bit altogether."
Looks/Style Ranked 1974 Pontiac Grand Am better.
"Close call. 2 different exterior styles. In the end, I preferred the “fastback” styling and the louvered rear window covers!"
Front Seats Ranked 1974 Pontiac Grand Am better.
"Basically the same except they were the corduroy wale which was a great look! And comfortable. The GP had the leather-like vinyl."
Back Seats Ranked 1974 Pontiac Grand Am better.
"The seat coverings (corduroy) was the difference... "
Cargo Capacity Ranked 1974 Pontiac Grand Am better.
"I believe the trunk capacity was a bit more..."
Family Car Ranked 1974 Pontiac Grand Am better.
"Again very similar, but I believe it felt roomier."
Value Ranked 1974 Pontiac Grand Am better.
"Only that the price of the Grand Am was less for almost the same car. "
Would Buy Ranked 1974 Pontiac Grand Am better.
"The nostalgia of having been married,(chauffeured around for the processional), in the Grand Am gives it a slight edge. The looks and uniqueness of the rear quarter louvered windows was a design winner. I just wish it had the power of the ‘73 Grand Prix."

The 73 was luxurious yet very sporty. It had materials in it that weren’t cheap compared to today’s cars bThe 73’ had the Pontiac 400 4bbl with duel exhaust with posi traction. A real powerhouse for the era. The 73’ was loaded minus the moon roof but had a full vinyl which was elegant The sound of that 400 was music to the ears. Triple black like the one in photo. Beautiful!
