1966 Ford Thunderbird Review

Definitely a good looking car, owned it for a few years now drives ok. Upsides: Fast, made well, great rear gears, luxurious for 1966, Soft ride. Downsides: Where to begin? If bought as a barn find it will need lead substitute to run right, requires 91 or higher fuel, leaks everything...I mean everything, wiring is badly designed and often malfunctions, power locks are vacuum controlled and are almost impossible to fix when broken, overheats (may just be my particular one)...kills batteries pretty much overnight with no parasitic battery bleed, FE 390 is a boat anchor. I would have trouble recommending this car just on the principal that it is a very expensive car to fix and maintain, but if equipped with the FE 428 can probably be turned into a pretty sweet drag car.

1966 428 Q Code Thunderbird Convertible — I love everything about this car. It drives like a dream. It glides down the road. One of only 75 built with the 428 Q code, power windows, seats and Factory Air. Immaculate condition. Under 70k miles too. Fun all the way around.

Pros: Turns heads and snaps necks when you press on the accelerator

Cons: Not very fuel efficient but. this car was built when gas was under 30 cents a gallon

Sexy And Beautiful — everything about her i love! how she's a 60s car and not some fat huge modern car. how she's as strait as could be and has a beautiful color. i wouldn't trade this car for any car in the world.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: most all electronic system works everything looks good and interior and engine in great shape.

Cons: been sitting since 1988 needs work and a bit of tcl

The Private World Of Thunderbird — For 1966, Thunderbird was offered as a 4 window 2 door hardtop, a convertible and the above two door 2 window Town Coupe with a larger c-pillar. Most cars become invisible behind this 3' pillar when driving, so the optional right hand mirror proved very useful. The '66 T-Bird had great style, handling, power and a jet-age interior inspired by the 707. Options included swing-away steering wheel, fender-mounted turn signal indicators and electric vent windows. The example above was used as a daily driver for many years; finished inside and out in Silver Mink - a light turquoise.....

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: My favorite of the 1964-1966 Generation; Featured full-width sequential tail lights. Great handling, powerful and easy to use as a daily driver.

Cons: The optional A/C had only two vents in the center of the dash.

Classic T'bird — Dark green, metal flake, gloss coated new paint job. New chrome on bumpers. Original engine. Lots of power. Like riding on a cloud. Owned for 28 years. Still have to redo the interior. Cool slide to the side steering wheel. Speedometer is solid red line. Leather seats, electric drivers seat adjustment. Electric windows. Vaccuum controlled vents.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Classic, Landau model, perfect paint, powerful 390 V8 engine.

Cons: Low gas mileage

This Classy Car....needs And Belongs With A Classy Owner!!!!! — I've always disliked FORD, but became very attached to this Beauty! It sounds and drives very NICE! The only thing I never had fixed and didn't have the patience for was the electrical wiring for the seat adjusting, mirrors, and window down/up--it just seems to be something loose because it will work one minute and hit a slight bump and then not work. There REALLY IS a SECOND SET OF (just about) EVERYTHING for this Classic! So ordering stuff as such won't be a hassle or cost a pretty penny--cuz I have extras (in GREAT) shape for this car. It is like driving a big boat--but is strong and solid. The paint job is still looking good--minus a few MINOR scratches(VERY MINOR). There are no dents or dings--NO body damage AT ALL! My older Brother left it behind when he went to college and left it up to me to sell for him. I have had my drive or two...and it has been in my back yard with a FOR SALE sign on it for years...just no publicity.

Pros: Looks Sweeeet, sounds Sweeeet, and is drooled upon!...chick magnet

Cons: stupid loose wires in trunk that I can't(don't have patience) to figure out!!

Awesome — It is an over all amazing car, smooth on the ride, the horse power is there, but sucks on gas milage, it is a babe getter, and I wish I still had mine, would buy it in a heart beat if i ever got the chance to again.

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: fun and excitement

Cons: gas

Stylin — Restoration project car while in a California Car Club. Wound up taking Best In Show for restoration. Beautiful car Champagne in Color. Loved the tilt and swing away steering wheel. Difficult to find replacement parts for because it was a one year only car inside and out.

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: Lovely Design, Roomy and reflected when the T-Bird was still a T-Bird

Cons: Performance of the 390cu in moter sucked do to poor air flow
