After a one year hiatus, the GMC Envoy emerged from its cocoon in 2002 a completely new vehicle. Besides the re-done exterior, the Envoy sports a powerful new 4.2 L, 270 hp I6 engine with 4 speed automatic transmission. The midsize SUV comes in 4 trims: SLE 2WD, SLE 4WD, SLT 2WD, and SLT 4WD.
As for gas mileage, expect 15-16 mpg in the city and 21-22 on the highway. All 4 trims have 4 doors and seat 5. In addition, the Envoy delivers standard air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, power seats, cd player, and ABS brakes. The SLT adds standard leather seats. Maximum towing capacity ranges from 6200-6400 lbs.
Overall, drivers agree that the 2002 GMC Envoy's makeover gave it key features that helped it stay competitive in the midsize SUV market, especially with the new engine and styling. However, critics don't think GMC did enough to put the Envoy at the top of the food chain. Steering and handling could use some tweaking and ultimately put the 2002 GMC Envoy a notch below the competition.

Ive taken my 2002 Envoy SLT on numerous trips for long distances. A very good ride and no problems .I really like it. Classy looking and very easy to drive. Jan 09, 2023

Well built SUV. Mine has heated seats , sunroof, cd changer, Loaded. Braking is fine. decent gas mileage for an suv. my 4x4 actuator quit working and im having a hard time finding a replacement. the paint is flaking off on the rear quarter panel.Jun 04, 2014

I love the way the 02 GMC Envoy is styled. The newer models have changed the body style. I love this version. It is a great family vehicle for those long summer trips. The SUV gives plenty of leg room for the front and back passengers.Apr 19, 2014

109,000 miles, I love her but she's cost me this year! Now she's like a brand new truck! Tranmission needed rebuilt (ask for the new version rebuilt kit, more heavy duty. Same as on the yukon), tires, hubcap, brakes, tranny flush, cv joints & O2 sensor. About 6k inc.labor. But everything else runs & looks great! Never getting rid of my trucky! Great space for a family of 4 and 2 dogs :-) Very powerful engine, original tranny just couldn't keep up. Go ENVOYS!May 19, 2010

Has a smooth ride, smooth acceleration, quiet on the road, handles very nicely on the highway. Braking is very smooth and quiet. The interior styling is nice and more upscale than the Chevrolet or Oldsmobile counterparts (TrailBlazer and Bravada). The Envoy has every option you could think of. Downsides of the Envoy include poor fuel economy, and lower quality than other vehicles I have owned. I have had 2 wheel bearing hubs replaced, the AC compressor replaced, the air pump for the rear suspension replaced, and have had a new tie rod put in. There are problems with the front suspension and the engine is VERY noisy and sluggish when cold. When I first start it up on cold morning is sounds and feels like a diesel. It is as fun to drive as driving a mid-size SUV can be... The engine and drive-train are reliable, but many other components are not.Dec 26, 2009

Performance gets 4 stars, she's got power galour. runs smooth, driver friendly the quality if this SUV is outstanding,Apperance of the car: the interior is stylish, maintenance has been excellent, other than regular servicing I have not had to have any major repairs to this vehicle. Its pretty cool, equipt with ON STAR, CD and cassette player. Lots of extra plugs for add ons, like your phone charger, navigational device and laptop computer. The sun roof on a cool spring day is awesome...this car handles like a charm. the rear seats are 60/40 split. Seat two and fold down one, or Seat one and fold down two...leaves plenty of room for our 107lb Yellow Lab and our luggage too. Nov 16, 2009

It is an overall great vehicle. It is worth buying. It performes very well. It has a great build. It is not that expensive to keep going. It is a lot of fun to drive. I would recommmend it to anyone.Oct 07, 2009

Performance for a straight six is better than the V 8 model. It has ALL the goodies and rides nice and even does some 4 wheeling. It's not on gas on tghe highway but a killer around town.We love our EnvoyJul 01, 2009

Just got it used this summer and it is a great car especially with toledo winters. its is great for towing and for winter driveing. the performance is great. no complaints excepts for gas milege. its very comfortable to drive and is quiet in the highway even when i was towing a uhaul.

I bought this truck with 35k miles on it and traded it in with just over 80k. It was a spectacular truck with a ton of options and great handling. The gas mileage was about 22 MPG on the highway and 15 in town. I was one of the thousands of people that had to downsize to accommodate the rising gas prices. :'(Jul 05, 2008
