"We got a great big Envoy..." Is it just me, or don't you think they should use the theme from "Convoy" to advertise the 2008 GMC Envoy on TV? It may be their last chance, as the Envoy is set to be replaced in 2009 by the crossover Terrain. For now, this mid-sized SUV comes in four trims, each offered in both rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. The SLE and SLT trims come with a 285-hp, 4.2-liter I6 engine, while the upscale luxurious Denali boasts more power with its 5.3-liter V8 that delivers 300-hp. Both are paired with a 4-speed automatic. The V8 features cylinder deactivation while at cruising speeds, in order to improve fuel economy, which hits about 15/22 mpg.
Basically a carryover from 2007, the 2008 Envoy receives standard satellite radio and side curtain head airbags for both rows this year. These join the dual front bags and proves to be a good thing, as the SUV earns five stars in side impact tests, but only 3-4 in frontal tests. Other safety features on all trims include ABS brakes, stability control, and OnStar. The 2008 Envoy seats four or five in two rows, with 60/40 split-folding rear seats. The cargo area starts at 43 cubic feet and expands to 80, and a roof rack offers more storage options. Power features, a CD player, and cruise control are standard on the base model, and more creature comforts get added as you move up the line. The high-end Denali comes fully loaded with heated leather seats, but also distinguishes itself with more exterior chrome and thicker sound insulation for a notably quieter ride.
Though it's able to tow up to 6600 pounds with its V8 engine, and can be taken off-road as part of the three-mode all-wheel drive system (but be careful of the small 8-inch ground clearance), the 2008 GMC Envoy focuses more on family comfort than rugged muscle. A "luxury ride" suspension features Bilstein shocks and front and rear stabilizer bars, while the Denali offers improved passenger comfort with its air-spring rear load-leveling suspension.
4.2 Overall rating
(16 reviews)This is my daily driver and is very reliable in all weather conditions that NE PA throws at me. Tow's my 8' enclosed trailer very well. Easy dial on the fly 4x4 system. Very easy and affordable to maintain. Love it.
The ONLY thing I dislike about this vehicle is that the gas mileage is too low for my everyday travels. I travel about 50miles a day and need a vehicle with better mpg. Otherwise; this vehicle is PERFECT! I'm struggling with actually wanting to part with it. The vehicle looks nice inside and out. VERY comfortable especially since its the denali package. I don't notice road noise at all. Again a very comfortable and luxurious ride. Maintenance repairs are about avg. Cargo capacity is good. I keep a large crate for my dog that travels with me very often in the cargo area without having to fold down any seats! PLUS keep all of his equipment needed for training and travel.. LOVE that I have the room for this! Acceleration of this vehicle is FAST and handles VERY well. (I'm a little bit of a speed freak, I admit). Braking is also great. I had an incidence a year ago where I felt the vehicle slip during driving through an ice storm. Traction control took over and allowed me to safely handle the vehicle through the icy roadway. I got to work safely in one piece!
These are outstanding, high quality mid size SUVs with a luxury ride. I have owned two of them, and they are two of the best vehicles I have ever owned. You do have to keep up with the maintenance, but, they are well worth it. Very safe to drive.
Very reliable very comfortable and the price was great
I loved the way it handles, has good power, comfortable seating. Interior has held up extremely well, the back has lots of space for weekend travels or shopping trips, to taking sporting gear to practice. The exterior always looks nice the running boards keep it sporty and sleek. The wheels are in great shape no scratches and or dings.
