As people movers go, the 2008 Honda Odyssey looks to be trying to knock Chrysler out of the top spot in the minivan segment. Minor exterior enhancements help snazz up the styling, while new performance technology improves the always-annoying low fuel economy.
Right off the bat, you'll notice some small changes to the front and rear fascias. Head and taillights have been tweaked, a new alloy wheel design added, and the hexagonal grille from the Accord attached to the 2008 Odyssey. On the inside, new color choices and more options are available, including a rearview camera, memory settings for the mirrors, a 4-way power passenger seat, and Bluetooth. But the real attraction is a new version of the 3.5-liter VTEC V6 engine. In the base LX and EX trims, this engine gets 244 hp. In the EX-L and Touring, the more fuel efficient 3.5-liter iVTEC V6 gets 241 hp, but features Variable Cylinder Management. This system deactivates two or three cylinders (depending on driving conditions) when not needed during cruising or deceleration, thereby saving on fuel consumption.
The compact minivan manages to seat up to eight passengers in three rows. Cargo space starts at 38 cubic feet. The third row split-folds flat into the floor, expanding cargo capacity to 91 cubic feet. With the second row also removed, the 2008 Odyssey can accommodate 147 cubic feet. The 2nd Row PlusOne setup seats three (two adults and a child), and this is now standard in the Touring for 2008. All trims start with full power features, a CD player, tri-zone climate control, and cruise control. New for 2008 is standard MP3 capability with an input jack. Options add the requisite DVD player and navigation system. Five-star ratings are due to standard ABS brakes, traction and stability control, and dual front-side and side curtain airbags for all three rows.
