Question type: Maintenance & Repair

About two months ago, I noticed the heat would only work if I was driving fast on the
highway and would quit working in the city.  No biggie cause I live in the south, but
now it is freezing and even on highway the heater only blows cold, but every once in
awhile the engine temp gauge will spike to overheating.  Never smells like it is
overheating and will often go right back down within a minute or two.  I am very handy
and would prefer to fix this myself.  I just don't know where to start.  I changed out the
cylinders and plugs on same vehicle, so I am certain unless it involves disassembling
the whole damn engine, I can handle it.

this is classic of low fluid. check your coolant level first. if it is low, fill it and it should operate normally. continue to check the fluid periodically, if you are losing it consistently then there is another problem.

Sounds to me you have a clogged up heater core if you use the green antifreeze that stuff will clog the heater core
