Code P0038

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced the B1O2 Oxygen Sensor. Now this new code pops up, P0038.
The engine light is steady on, runs good(so far), but I'm not happy with an
engine light that stays on.  A guy said something about a fuse on the wiring
from the oxygen sensor.  Does this sound right?

P0038 JEEP - O2 Sensor 1/2 Heater Circuit High...Possible causes; Faulty Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 2, Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 2 fuse, Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 2 harness is open or shorted, Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 2 circuit poor electrical connection, Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)...The P0038 is set when the ECM detects an excessively high voltage through the heated oxygen sensor heater circuit...Description... Oxygen Sensors (O2S) or Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) need to reach a minimum operating temperature of 750 degrees F to produce an accurate voltage signal. The faster the heated oxygen sensor reaches that temperature the faster the sensor will start sending an accurate signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM). In order to achieve the require temperature, a heater element is included inside the heated oxygen sensor. The ECM controls the heated oxygen sensor heater element based on signals from the engine coolant temperature and engine load. The ECM controls the heater element circuit by allowing current flow to ground. The ECM monitors the voltage signal received through the heater element circuit and determines the state of the circuit by comparing the voltage detected with the factory specifications.

Thank You Rowefast for your quick response back. I seen on the wiring harness where it connects to the Oxygen Sensor Connector, like the wire wasn't fully in the Black Connector on the harness. Would that set off the Code P0038 or the Code for a bad Oxygen Sensor?

Yes it would, now you should get the code cleared, stop at an auto parts store or where ever you had gotten the code read.

Thank you so so much. I'm going to get someone to check the harness out to make sure of what I seen. It wouldn't clear the code after the new oxygen sensor was replaced. The engine light is still on. :(
