Reviews SummaryThe redesigned 2026 Subaru Outback may look like an SUV, but it retains all the advantages of its wagon predecessors. It's as impressive off-road as it is comfortable on pavement, while numerous feature enhancements are clear indications that Subaru pays close attention to how its customers use their vehicles. Verdict: In terms of price, performance, and practicality, we found no notable flaws with the redesigned Outback, making it a top choice for adventure-bound shoppers.
Reviews SummaryAutomakers have traditionally had a hard time making money on entry-level subcompact cars, because they have low profit margins, but America has largely moved away from cars to crossover SUVs—and higher prices. That allows car companies to offer an entry-level subcompact SUV for thousands more than a similar sedan or hatchback. Such is the case with the Hyundai Venue, which costs more than its predecessor, the subcompact Accent that was dropped after the 2022 model year. While the price is higher, the advantage for buyers is a vehicle that generally has more cargo space and is more practical. We recently drove the 2026 Hyundai Venue SEL w/2-Tone Roof (yes, that’s the trim level name) to find out if a subcompact crossover is a better buy than a cheaper subcompact car. Verdict: The Hyundai Venue sacrifices refinement for a price point that isn’t as low as a comparable subcompact car. We’d be tempted to spend a little more for a slightly larger compact car with more power, features, and refinement.

The 2026 Subaru Outback underwent a transformation, adopting a more SUV-like appearance while maintaining its wagon roots. Despite only slight increases in dimensions, the Outback's blockier and more upright design gave it a more commanding presence. The new rectangular grille, horizontal accent lights, and boxy headlights contributed to its robust look. The rugged aesthetic was further enhanced by faceted plastic trim around the body and wheel arches, creating an illusion of a taller ride height. Inside, the Outback featured a flatter dashboard and a digital instrument panel, with the infotainment touchscreen now positioned atop the dash. The reintroduction of physical climate control buttons and knobs improved usability, while the interior materials, even in the base Premium trim, were of commendable quality.
In contrast, the 2026 Hyundai Venue presented itself as a compact crossover SUV, though its dimensions and features leaned more towards a tall hatchback. The Venue's design was characterized by a small and narrow appearance, with an upright windshield and SUV-like cues such as a bluff nose and standard roof rails. The Venue's high nose, lower headlights, and high-set daytime running lights added to its crossover appeal. Inside, the Venue's interior was simple and functional, with a digital instrument cluster and a small touchscreen that resembled an iPad. The use of body-color trim around the air vents and shifter brought some exterior flair into the cabin, but the overall design was straightforward and practical.

The 2026 Subaru Outback offered two engine options: a 2.5-liter boxer engine producing 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, and a turbocharged 2.4-liter boxer-four with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with a CVT and all-wheel drive. The base engine, despite initial skepticism, provided adequate power for the 3,741-pound Outback, with a responsive CVT enhancing acceleration. The turbocharged engine offered a more potent option for those seeking extra power. The Outback excelled in handling, providing a composed and confident ride in various conditions. Its off-road capability was notable, with 8.7 inches of ground clearance and an X-Mode feature for improved traction. The forthcoming Wilderness model promised even greater off-road prowess with increased ground clearance and all-terrain tires.
In contrast, the 2026 Hyundai Venue was powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 121 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive. The Venue's performance was modest, with a 0-60 mph time of 8.5–8.8 seconds. While peppy in city driving, the Venue struggled at highway speeds, with the transmission slow to downshift for more power. The Venue's handling benefited from its small size and low weight, making it agile in traffic and easy to park. However, its 6.7 inches of ground clearance resulted in some body lean in corners, and the ride could be jiggly on rough surfaces due to the solid rear axle.
The 2026 Subaru Outback's interior space was impressive, with a total interior volume of 146.9 cubic feet, qualifying it as a midsize SUV. The rear seats offered ample legroom and comfort for taller adults, while the larger windows enhanced the feeling of spaciousness. The cargo capacity increased to 34.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats, with a maximum of 80.5 cubic feet with the seatbacks folded. The Outback featured a multifunction cargo cover and a robust roof rack for additional storage options, catering to adventure-bound shoppers.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue, on the other hand, offered a more compact interior with cloth and H-Tex seats providing decent comfort. The front seats had six-way manual adjustments, while the rear seats could accommodate average-sized adults but were cramped for taller passengers. The Venue's cargo space was modest, with 31.9 cubic feet available with the rear seats folded and 18.7 cubic feet with them up. The Venue's interior featured hard black plastic surfaces, with limited soft-touch materials, reflecting its budget-friendly nature.
The 2026 Subaru Outback featured a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 12.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, offering customizable displays and improved processing power. The infotainment system was user-friendly, with logical menus and sharp graphics. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available, along with a wireless charging pad. The climate controls were separate from the infotainment screen, enhancing usability.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue came with an 8-inch touchscreen for basic infotainment features. While small by modern standards, it was functional and responsive. The Venue lacked some advanced features like navigation and a Wi-Fi hotspot but offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The audio system was a simple six-speaker unit, with no premium option available.
The 2026 Subaru Outback was equipped with Subaru's EyeSight suite of advanced safety features, including frontal collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and more. The Touring trim added premium features like a surround-view camera system and hands-free automated highway driving assist. While crash test results were not yet available, Subaru's commitment to safety suggested top marks were likely.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue offered a good set of standard safety features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. However, it lacked adaptive cruise control. The Venue received a four-star safety rating from the NHTSA, with some areas of improvement noted in its safety ratings.
