Reviews SummaryTo create the 2026 Forester Wilderness, Subaru adds all-terrain tires, increased ground clearance, and improved angles of approach, breakover, and departure. Drivetrain modifications enhance traction, added underbody protection prevents damage when off-roading, and a full-size all-terrain spare tire is ready when you need it. Styling changes convey this model’s rugged capabilities, and Subaru outfits the interior for easy clean-up. All 2026 Forester models get a new center console design and updated protection for rear passengers in a collision. Verdict: Push the new 2026 Forester Wilderness to its limits, and you’ll be impressed by its off-roading capability. But, even if you’re not planning to traverse challenging terrain, it is comforting to know that the Wilderness offers more competence than a typical crossover SUV when confronted with unexpected situations.
Reviews SummaryAutomakers have traditionally had a hard time making money on entry-level subcompact cars, because they have low profit margins, but America has largely moved away from cars to crossover SUVs—and higher prices. That allows car companies to offer an entry-level subcompact SUV for thousands more than a similar sedan or hatchback. Such is the case with the Hyundai Venue, which costs more than its predecessor, the subcompact Accent that was dropped after the 2022 model year. While the price is higher, the advantage for buyers is a vehicle that generally has more cargo space and is more practical. We recently drove the 2026 Hyundai Venue SEL w/2-Tone Roof (yes, that’s the trim level name) to find out if a subcompact crossover is a better buy than a cheaper subcompact car. Verdict: The Hyundai Venue sacrifices refinement for a price point that isn’t as low as a comparable subcompact car. We’d be tempted to spend a little more for a slightly larger compact car with more power, features, and refinement.

The 2026 Subaru Forester continued to build on its reputation for utility and safety with the introduction of a redesigned Wilderness model. This model featured a lifted suspension, all-terrain tires, exclusive wheel designs, and distinctive anodized copper accents, making it easily recognizable. The Wilderness badges added to its unique identity, and while the look was polarizing, it seemed to suit the Forester better than other Subaru models. Inside, the Forester Wilderness was designed for adventure, with water-resistant artificial leather seats and all-weather floor mats to handle mud and grime. Copper accents and Wilderness emblems on the head restraints reminded drivers of the vehicle's capabilities. The 2026 Forester lineup included various trims, with prices ranging from $31,445 to $43,045, and was manufactured in Lafayette, Indiana.
In contrast, the 2026 Hyundai Venue presented itself as a compact crossover SUV, though its dimensions and design leaned more towards a tall hatchback. With only front-wheel drive and 6.7 inches of ground clearance, it was more suited for urban environments than rugged terrains. The Venue's design was compact and narrow, with SUV-like features such as a bluff nose, roof rails, and black wheel flares. Inside, the Venue offered a simple and functional layout, with a digital instrument cluster and a small touchscreen that resembled an iPad. The interior was practical, with body-color trim adding a touch of flair. However, the Venue's design and features were more aligned with budget-conscious consumers seeking a city-friendly vehicle.

The 2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness was powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. While it lacked the turbocharged option available in the Outback Wilderness, the Forester's lighter weight helped mitigate the power deficit. During testing in the Portland, Oregon area, the Forester's continuously variable transmission (CVT) performed well, maintaining engine responsiveness and offering eight programmed ratios for better control. The Wilderness model featured a shorter final-drive ratio for improved low-speed responsiveness and a towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds. Subaru's Active Torque Split all-wheel-drive system, with X-Mode Dual Mode traction settings, enhanced the Forester's off-road capabilities. The Wilderness model also boasted increased ground clearance, improved approach and departure angles, and additional underbody protection, making it suitable for challenging terrains.
In contrast, the 2026 Hyundai Venue was equipped with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, delivering 121 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque. The Venue's performance was modest, with a 0-60 mph time of 8.5–8.8 seconds, aided by its lightweight design. The CVT transmission provided power to the front wheels, but its performance was less impressive at highway speeds. The Venue's handling benefited from its small size and low weight, making it agile in city traffic and easy to park. However, the 6.7 inches of ground clearance resulted in some body lean during cornering. The Venue's ride was generally comfortable, though the solid rear axle made it less smooth on uneven surfaces.
The 2026 Subaru Forester prioritized function over form, with a classic two-box design that maximized passenger and cargo space. The Wilderness model's heated front seats offered comfort, with the driver's seat providing 10-way power adjustment. However, the lack of a heated steering wheel and rear seats was a drawback. The panoramic sunroof added to the cabin's openness, but its lack of tint could lead to solar heating. Rear seat comfort was commendable, with ample legroom and safety improvements in the seatbelts. The Forester Wilderness offered 27.5 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 69.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, making it a practical choice for carrying gear.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue's interior featured cloth and H-Tex seats with manual adjustments, providing adequate comfort for most drivers. While headroom was plentiful, legroom was limited for taller occupants. The rear seat could accommodate two adults comfortably, but three would be a tight fit. The Venue's cargo space was modest, with 18.7 cubic feet available with the rear seats up and 31.9 cubic feet with them folded. The lack of sound deadening in the cargo area was a clear indication of cost-cutting. The Venue's interior was dominated by hard black plastic, with limited soft-touch surfaces, reflecting its budget-friendly nature.
The 2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness offered a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and an 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. However, the lack of a digital voice assistant and a cluttered interface were drawbacks. The Wilderness model featured a 180-degree forward view camera system, though its distorted view made it less reliable. The Harman Kardon premium audio system provided excellent sound quality, enhancing the driving experience.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue came with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, offering basic features such as phone connectivity, media controls, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While it lacked navigation and a Wi-Fi hotspot, the system was user-friendly and responsive. The Venue's audio system was a simple six-speaker unit, with no premium option available. The digital instrument cluster provided limited information, reflecting the Venue's focus on affordability.
The 2026 Subaru Forester featured Subaru's EyeSight package, which included adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. Additional safety features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Emergency Stop Assist. The Forester's safety systems performed well during testing, though occasional false reminders to hold the steering wheel were noted. The Forester received a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and five-star ratings from the NHTSA, highlighting its commitment to safety.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue offered a good set of standard safety features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. Blind-spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert were available on higher trims. However, adaptive cruise control was not offered. The Venue's safety systems were effective, though the driver attention monitor was overly sensitive. The Venue received four out of five stars from the NHTSA, with some safety ratings from the IIHS still pending.
