Reviews Summary

Verdict: Even the base model Cayenne delivers an agile driving experience, but those willing to dig deep into their bank account for one of Porsche’s more expensive Cayenne models are rewarded with a spirited drive like no other. The competition here is stiff, in the form of other German SUVs like the Audi Q8, BMW X5, and Mercedes-Benz GLE, and their performance variants. However, the Cayenne is not here to lose.

Reviews Summary

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas continues as VW’s American-market three-row SUV (a two-row Atlas Cross Sport is also available, but we’ll cover that separately), largely unchanged from its substantial 2024 refresh. For 2026, Volkswagen adds a factory-installed HomeLink rearview mirror to all but the base Atlas SE trim level–hardly groundbreaking stuff. What remains, however, is a vehicle that impresses with its upscale appearance and a genuinely spacious interior. A stiff ride and poorly executed technology will fight and frustrate you every step of the way, but the Atlas will nonetheless make you look good.

Verdict: The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas delivers on its core promise of style and space at a non-luxury price point. If you can tolerate its subpar ride quality and maddening infotainment system—or if you simply plan to rely on Apple CarPlay and ignore the native tech—this handsome three-row SUV offers compelling value for shoppers prioritizing looks and space.

Look and feel

2025 Porsche Cayenne

9/10

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

9/10

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne presented itself as a versatile SUV, available in both a standard model with a squared-off rear and a sporty Cayenne Coupe. The GTS trim, which was the focus of our review, stood out with high gloss black trim and bronze exhaust tips, complemented by a unique front fascia with larger air intakes and tinted headlights. The 21-inch wheels in anthracite gray and red brake calipers added to its sporty appeal. Inside, the Cayenne offered extensive customization options, from color choices like Carmine Red to various trim and seat belt options. Despite the potential for high costs, the ability to personalize the vehicle ensured a unique ownership experience. The cabin was thoughtfully designed, with mechanical controls for essential features and a dashboard-mounted shifter toggle that maximized storage space.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas, particularly in the SEL Premium R-Line trim, exuded an upscale appearance, bordering on luxury crossover territory. Starting from the base SE trim, the Atlas featured full-LED lighting, power-adjustable heated side mirrors, and a sculpted silhouette. The SE with Technology trim added an illuminated logo, light bar, and 20-inch alloys, while the Peak Edition introduced rugged bumpers and blackout trim. The SEL Premium R-Line further enhanced the exterior with power-folding side mirrors and 21-inch two-tone alloy wheels. Inside, the Atlas impressed with quilted diamond-pattern leather seats, metallic accents, and artificial wood trim, creating a warm and inviting environment. However, the infotainment system, despite its modern design, proved frustrating to use, with touch-sensitive controls that were invisible at night. The Atlas offered competitive pricing, starting at $40,785 for the base SE, making it an attractive option compared to more expensive rivals.

Performance

2025 Porsche Cayenne

9/10

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

5/10

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne offered a range of engines, each delivering impressive performance. The base model featured a 3.0-liter V6 engine producing 348 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque, while the Cayenne S boasted a V8 with 468 hp. The Turbo GT, available only as a coupe, delivered a staggering 650 hp. Plug-in hybrid options provided up to 729 hp for those seeking peak performance. The GTS trim, with its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, generated 493 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed transmission and all-wheel drive. The Cayenne GTS excelled in handling, with precise steering and a low center of gravity, making it agile and athletic despite its 5,000-pound curb weight. The vehicle's adaptive suspension and Pirelli P Zero tires contributed to its sporty performance, while the carbon ceramic brakes provided ample stopping power. In Sport and Sport Plus modes, the Cayenne GTS delivered exhilarating driving experiences, while Normal mode offered a comfortable commute.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas retained the same engine as previous models, a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder producing 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the Atlas offered front-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive available on all trims. The engine, known for its refinement and efficiency, provided a wide powerband, making the Atlas feel capable once underway. However, initial acceleration felt adequate but not eager, with a zero-to-60 mph time of 8.3 seconds for the AWD model. The Atlas excelled in highway merging and maintained a smooth rhythm on country roads. The Drive Mode Select system offered various options, including Sport mode for enhanced throttle response. The 4Motion AWD system performed well in rain and light snow, though it wasn't designed for serious off-roading. The Atlas's ride quality, particularly in the SEL Premium R-Line trim with 21-inch wheels, transmitted vibrations and harshness, detracting from its overall refinement.

Form and function

2025 Porsche Cayenne

7/10

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

9/10

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne offered a la carte customization, with limited standard features. The base model included eight-way power-adjustable seats, heated but not cooled or massaged. Higher trims like the GTS added a GT Sport steering wheel and Race-Tex headliner. The options list was extensive, allowing for personalization of interior materials and features. However, the Cayenne lacked a third row, accommodating only five passengers. Cargo space was smaller than competitors, with 27.3 cubic feet behind the second row, expanding to 60 cubic feet with seats folded. The coupe version offered less space, and plug-in hybrid models further reduced cargo capacity.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas excelled in accommodating passengers and cargo. The SEL Premium R-Line's front seats were heated, ventilated, and equipped with massage, providing comfort on long drives. The second row featured captain's chairs that folded flat and tipped forward for easy third-row access. The third row offered decent leg support, accommodating taller passengers. Cargo capacity was a strong point, with 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 55.5 cubic feet with seats folded, and a total of 96.6 cubic feet. The Atlas provided competitive space across all three rows, making it an excellent choice for families.

Technology

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

4/10

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne featured a curved 12.6-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen display with the Porsche Communication Management system. It included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Spotify, Apple Music, satellite radio, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. An optional 10.9-inch passenger screen allowed for navigation and media control. The screens were well-organized and responsive, with voice control available. A head-up display provided information, though it appeared dim with polarized sunglasses. The Cayenne included four high-speed USB-C charging ports and a cooled wireless charging area.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas came standard with a 12-inch touchscreen running the MIB3 operating system, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless charging. The SEL Premium R-Line added a Harman Kardon 12-speaker audio system, a head-up display, and a surround-view camera system. However, the MIB3 system was frustrating to use, with touch-sensitive controls that were invisible at night. The voice control system was unreliable, making Apple CarPlay or Android Auto the preferred options. The Harman Kardon audio system delivered excellent sound quality, and the Digital Cockpit Pro offered configurable views.

Safety

2025 Porsche Cayenne

7/10

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

8/10

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne offered standard parking sensors, forward collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring, but adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-departure warning were optional. Porsche's InnoDrive adaptive cruise control system was not tested. The Cayenne lacked ratings from NHTSA and IIHS.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas earned a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA and was named a Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS for 2025. The IQ.Drive suite of driver assistance features was standard, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and Travel Assist. The systems performed reliably during testing, and the SEL Premium R-Line added Park Assist.
