Reviews Summary

No model demonstrates Kia’s growth like the Sportage compact crossover SUV. The nameplate has been around since Kia’s early days in the United States, and has evolved into a true rival for popular crossovers like the Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4. The current-generation Sportage was introduced for the 2023 model year; it gets revised styling for 2026.

Verdict: The refreshed Sportage arrives with the competent execution we’ve come to expect from Kia, but the X-Pro Prestige model doesn’t live up to the brand’s reputation for value.

Reviews Summary

With more range, more power, and improved technology, the Chevrolet Bolt EV returns after a three-year hiatus. It also claims the title of the most affordable EV in the U.S., but is due to remain in production only until mid-2027.

Verdict: The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV is an excellent choice for shoppers seeking an electric vehicle that won't break the bank. It may not be all that fancy or refined, but it gets the basics right when it comes to range and capabilities.

Look and feel

2026 Kia Sportage

8/10

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

5/10

The 2026 Kia Sportage showcased a refreshed styling that gave it a more rugged, truck-like appearance, ensuring it stood out in the compact crossover segment. The wide grille design, which pushed the headlights to the corners, was retained but became more rectangular, with vertical headlights and daytime running lights. This design aligned the Sportage with the larger Sorento and Telluride models, enhancing its rugged appeal. However, the rear end remained curvaceous, creating a slight mismatch with the restyled front. The 108.5-inch wheelbase, longer than its competitors, was evident in the profile view, with crisp body lines adding visual interest.

The 2026 Sportage X-Pro model benefited the most from the new styling, aligning better with its off-road aspirations. The X-Pro featured all-terrain tires on 17-inch wheels, while the X-Line had all-seasons on 19-inch wheels. Inside, the Sportage received a new steering wheel with a squared-off rim and a prominent rectangular center, reminiscent of early airbag-equipped wheels. The dashboard's large air vents were removed, making the curved screen more prominent. The materials used in the X-Pro test car were not luxurious but felt appropriate for an active lifestyle vehicle.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt retained a familiar look with slight styling changes, making it resemble a conventional gas-powered car more than an EV. The front end featured a thin slot behind the Chevy Bowtie logo, and the previous grille insert was integrated into the bumper. The 2027 model continued the trend of straddling the line between a large hatchback and a subcompact SUV, with only one body style available. The Bolt's tall and narrow stance prioritized utility and interior space over a sporty appearance, with the RS model adding gloss black exterior trim for a touch of flair.

Inside, the Bolt underwent a more dramatic makeover while maintaining its basic structure. A larger digital instrument panel and infotainment touchscreen were introduced, with the push-button gear selector moved to the steering column to free up center console space. The cabin was dominated by hard plastic surfaces, reinforcing the Bolt's budget feel, though the elbow touch points had thin padding. The RS trim featured Evotex synthetic leather with red stitching, while the rear seating area had an abundance of hard plastics and lacked padding for the door armrests.

Performance

2026 Kia Sportage

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

The 2026 Kia Sportage offered a range of powertrains, including conventional gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. The base and hybrid powertrains were available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, while the plug-in hybrid was AWD-only. Non-hybrid models used a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid models featured a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor, delivering 232 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque for hybrids, and 268 hp for plug-in hybrids.

The Sportage X-Pro, designed for off-road use, featured all-terrain tires and different drive-mode tuning, including a Terrain Mode with snow, mud, and sand settings. Despite its off-road capabilities, the X-Pro's all-terrain tires were noisy and reduced the vehicle's potential for sporty driving. The Sportage's ground clearance was 8.3 inches across all models, similar to competitors like the Hyundai Tucson XRT and Honda CR-V TrailSport Hybrid.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt featured a new 65-kilowatt-hour lithium-iron phosphate battery pack, reducing costs and reliance on rare earth minerals. A motor from the Chevy Equinox EV provided 210 horsepower and 169 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels, with 0-60 mph acceleration in the low seven-second range. The Bolt's acceleration was quick compared to gas-powered subcompact SUVs, with immediate pedal response and one-pedal driving available.

The Bolt's ride was firm but not overly stiff, with road noise more noticeable due to the absence of an internal combustion engine. The heavy battery in the floor contributed to a low center of gravity, enhancing agility on curvy roads. The 2027 Bolt offered an EPA-estimated range of 262 miles on a full charge, with a Tesla-derived NACS charge port standard on all models. Charging speed increased to 150 kW, allowing a 10% to 80% recharge in 25 minutes.

Form and function

2026 Kia Sportage

8/10

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

6/10

The 2026 Kia Sportage's exterior styling changes did not affect its interior space, which remained competitive in the segment. Headroom in both rows was nearly identical to key rivals, with rear-seat legroom surpassing the Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4. Cargo space was 36.6 cubic feet with the rear bench in place and 69.3 cubic feet with it folded, expandable to 39.6 and 74.1 cubic feet, respectively, by adjusting the dual-level cargo floor. The Sportage's towing capacity was 2,500 pounds for non-hybrid models and 2,000 pounds for hybrid and plug-in hybrid models.

The center console offered ample storage space, with a large wireless charging pad, adjustable cupholders, and a sizable storage bin. Despite retaining a large shift lever and prominent buttons for front-seat and steering-wheel heating, Kia effectively utilized the available space.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt's driving position was more upright than typical SUVs, with ample space for larger occupants. Taller drivers might have wished for more telescoping extension from the steering wheel. The rear seats were also upright, with plenty of headroom and adequate thigh support. The Bolt's flat floor reduced the penalty for center-seat passengers.

The Bolt offered 16.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, with a large bin underneath the floor for additional storage. The rear seatbacks folded flat with the cargo floor in its upper position, and release latches were easily accessible from the cargo area. While there was no frunk, the Bolt provided ample storage for personal items, including a large bin with movable dividers, a big floor tray, and a deep center armrest bin.

Technology

The 2026 Kia Sportage came standard with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and touchscreen, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and wireless phone charging on all but the base LX trim. A Harman Kardon premium audio system was standard on SX and higher grades, with digital key functionality on X-Line and X-Pro models. The horizontal display blended the instrument cluster and touchscreen into one unit, with sharp graphics and large icons.

However, the screen-centric interface had shortcomings, with large icons limiting the number of items on the home screen and requiring regular swiping. Exiting Android Auto was more complicated than necessary, and the dual-function control panel for climate and audio systems required attention to ensure the correct function was adjusted.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt featured an 11-inch digital instrument panel and an 11.3-inch center touchscreen, running on a Google-based operating system. Apple CarPlay and standalone Android Auto were not supported, requiring Bluetooth pairing for personal music libraries. The optional Technology package added a surround-view camera system, digital rear-view mirror, additional safety features, and a wireless charging pad.

The infotainment system was user-friendly, with logical menus, sharp graphics, and quick responses. Physical climate controls reduced distraction, and the navigation system could locate charging stations and suggest the fastest options. The Bolt also offered vehicle-to-load charging, allowing it to serve as a backup power source for a home.

Safety

The 2026 Kia Sportage came with standard driver-assist features, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, lane following assist, and front and rear parking sensors. Higher trim levels offered adaptive cruise control synced with the navigation system, Highway Driving Assist, a surround-view camera system, and a Blind-spot View Monitor. The Sportage received the highest Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt's crash test results were not yet available, but it was expected to achieve high scores based on its platform. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, and a safety alert seat. The optional Technology package added a surround-view camera system, digital rear-view mirror, automatic wipers, rear-pedestrian alert, and traffic-sign recognition. GM's Super Cruise hands-free highway driving system was available for an additional cost.
