2023 Nissan Altima Reviews Summary

The traditional family sedan segment is taking the brunt of the impact associated with the shift in consumer preferences to SUVs. Nearly all large cars are gone from the marketplace, and the number of midsize sedans is half what it was just a few years ago. In the next 12 to 24 months, it will shrink by another 50 percent, leaving the Honda Accord, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Camry, and the subject of this review, the Nissan Altima, as the last midsize models standing (and the Legacy is likely on life support).

2024 Kia K5 Reviews Summary

If you can overlook the real-world fuel economy and unimpressive crash-test ratings, then a 2024 Kia K5 is a steal of an automobile. (Don’t worry, it has an engine immobilizer system to prevent theft.) It comes in LXS, GT-Line, EX, and GT trim levels, and the only change for 2024 is standard heated seats for the GT-Line trim. Turbocharging is standard, and you can get all-wheel drive if you live where the sun often doesn’t shine.

Verdict: It’s a shame Kia doesn’t offer the K5 with a hybrid powertrain, and its performance in new, tougher-to-pass crash tests is worrisome. But there is no doubt the 2024 Kia K5 is a stylish, comfortable, enjoyable, and technologically advanced midsize car. And the price is undeniably nice.

Look and feel

2023 Nissan Altima

7/10

2024 Kia K5

7/10

The 2023 Nissan Altima introduced an updated aesthetic, particularly noticeable in its front styling with a revised grille and new wheel designs. The inclusion of two new paint colors and 19-inch wheels on higher trims like the SL improved its street presence, though the stylish, curb-exposed wheels appeared prone to damage. It retained a strong visual character, even as the use of hard plastics inside hinted at its more economical starting price. The choice of Gray leather in higher trims presented an appealing contrast, despite the simulated wood trim that failed to convince.

In contrast, the 2024 Kia K5, especially the GT-Line model coated in Passion Red Tint Coat, turned heads on Southern California roads. While maintaining aesthetic continuity since its introduction in 2021 as a replacement for the Optima, this model continued to surprise the public with its fresh design. The GT-Line trim, not quite a full sports sedan yet more than just a base model, packed visual appeal with thoughtful interior design details like metallic trim around the vents and a robust transmission shifter, giving a feel of quality that belied the cabin's use of hard plastics.

Performance

2023 Nissan Altima

4/10

2024 Kia K5

7/10

The Altima's 2.5-liter engine, across various trims, mostly delivered adequate power with the front-wheel-drive models producing 188 horsepower and all-wheel drive slightly less at 182 horsepower. The SR VC-Turbo trim, offering a more exhilarating 248 horsepower with premium fuel, presented a livelier option. Despite its impressive power, the Altima struggled in real-world fuel economy and sometimes harsh drivability over rough terrains emphasized by noticeable cabin noise.

Alternatively, the K5 equipped with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine at base level provided 180 horsepower, which was quite efficient but fell short of its fuel economy estimates in real-world testing. The GT-Line and GT models, particularly the latter with its 290 horsepower setup, promised more excitement and superior handling. The car's performance was robust, with the suspension finely balancing comfort and control, making it a delight on twisty mountain roads, despite some deficits in brake performance under extreme conditions.

Form and function

2023 Nissan Altima

2024 Kia K5

8/10

Inside the Altima, the layout was straightforward with intuitive controls and notably comfortable Zero Gravity seats, albeit with some accessibility issues due to the low seating. The car offered dual-zone climate control and generous rear seat space but lacked in finer conveniences like rear AC vents unless in higher trims. Cargo space was slightly limited at 15.4 cubic feet, which was less than some competitors and might affect practicality for families.

The Kia K5 highlighted its functionality with easily accessible controls and spacious storage compartments, alongside generous front and rear legroom made slightly more restrictive with the panoramic sunroof installed. It boasted a larger trunk at 16 cubic feet, adding practicality. The artificial leather used in the K5 might make entry and exit cumbersome, similar to the Altima, but the vehicle had a remarkable blend of comfort and practicality.

Technology

2024 Kia K5

6/10

The Altima's technological offerings improved with the updated 12.3-inch touchscreen in higher trims, including features like wireless Apple CarPlay, a necessary upgrade over the base 5-inch display unit. Despite some inconsistencies in its Bose sound system, this setup significantly enhanced the user experience.

Conversely, the K5 offered an 8-inch touchscreen as standard, with a size upgrade and additional connected features in higher trims. Despite its larger screen, the need for a wired connection for smartphone integration in these higher trims was a surprising choice. Both models showcased substantial advancements in infotainment technology, bringing them on par with contemporary expectations.

Safety

2024 Kia K5

7/10

Safety technologies in the 2023 Altima included Nissan's comprehensive Safety Shield 360 suite, which provided robust active safety features, though the vehicle's ProPilot Assist sometimes reacted sluggishly under certain driving conditions. Its impressive safety ratings from the NHTSA confirmed its protective capabilities, though it suffered in the IIHS's updated side-impact test.

The 2024 K5 also boasted an extensive array of driver aids under the Kia Drive Wise banner, with added sophistication in systems like Highway Driving Assist, which excelled in challenging driving conditions. However, it faced drawbacks in updated IIHS crash tests, which might concern discerning buyers.
