2022 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews Summary

The iconic Range Rover receives a redesign for 2022, though from the outside the changes can be easy to miss. The interior has been updated with a simpler design and a notable improvement in technology. If you have the budget and desire for a large premium luxury SUV, perhaps with some off-road capabilities, you should start your search here.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class sits at the top of the automaker’s luxury SUV range. The three-row GLS is the biggest SUV Mercedes offers, and the “S” in its names signifies its status as the SUV equivalent of Mercedes’ flagship S-Class sedan.

The SUV that’s now known as the GLS was launched for the 2007 model year as the GL-Class, when Mercedes decided it needed a bigger, more luxurious SUV to sit above the M-Class in its lineup. The GL-Class and M-Class were rebadged GLS-Class and GLE-Class, respectively, in 2014 when Mercedes introduced a new naming scheme across its lineup.

The current version of the GLS was introduced for the 2020 model year, and represents the model’s third generation. It’s aimed at other full-size luxury SUVs, including the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, and Lexus LX.

Mercedes withdrew most of its V8 models from the United States for the 2022 model year, leaving only the base six-cylinder GLS 450 4Matic model. The automaker is expected to begin resuming dealer orders for V8 models as you read this, though, so the GLS 580 4Matic, AMG GLS 63, and Maybach GLS 600 4Matic models should return to showrooms soon. Because it was the only version available at the time, we tested a GLS 450 for this review.

Look and feel

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover underwent a subtle evolution rather than a complete redesign. Its front and side profiles remained largely unchanged from the previous generation, characterized by a broad, rounded face and expansive sheet metal. A notable update was the vertical accent strip under the mirrors, replacing the old L-shaped trim. The rear of the new Range Rover saw the most significant change, with thin LED strips integrated into a darker trim element replacing the old square taillights. The SUV maintained its imposing presence, emphasizing its size rather than masking it with sharp creases. Inside, the Range Rover's cabin was simplified with fewer buttons and a larger tablet-like touchscreen, offering a modern look. Premium leather and rich wood trim elements enhanced the interior's quality, providing a luxurious feel.

In contrast, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 presented a more understated appearance compared to its flashier competitors. The base model avoided excessive chrome and gaudy grilles, offering a subtle yet elegant look. The AMG GLS 63 and Maybach versions added visual drama with features like flared wheel arches, chrome accents, and larger wheels. Inside, the GLS 450's interior was luxurious, featuring leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, and ambient lighting. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen were well-integrated, providing a modern and sophisticated feel. While the GLS 450's interior was high-quality, it lacked some of the opulence found in higher-end models like the Maybach.

Performance

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

7/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover offered two powertrains: the base P400 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine producing 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, and the P530 with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine delivering 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. The P400 powertrain provided effortless acceleration, with Land Rover estimating a 0 to 60 mph time of 5.8 seconds. The Range Rover's handling was surprisingly agile for its size, with well-managed body roll and a calm, composed driving experience. Standard rear-wheel steering enhanced maneuverability, making it easy to navigate tight spaces. The Range Rover's off-road capability was impressive, thanks to the Terrain Response system, which optimized traction for various conditions.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 featured a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission, assisted by the EQ Boost mild-hybrid system. The engine produced 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, with the electric motor adding 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque in short bursts. The GLS 450's inline-six engine provided smooth and ample power, making it a suitable choice for a luxury SUV. However, the suspension lacked refinement, with excessive body motion over bumps and in corners. The GLS 450 had a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 pounds, which was competitive but not class-leading.

Form and function

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

8/10

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover offered ample space in the first two rows, enhanced by large windows and a panoramic sunroof. Front seats were comfortable, with available massage functions providing additional luxury. Storage options included two glove boxes, a wireless charging pad, and a large center console bin. The second row provided generous space for taller passengers, with power recline and sliding adjustments. The optional third row was accessible with a button, though headroom was limited for adults. Cargo space was 17.1 cubic feet with all seats in place, expanding to 93 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. The split tailgate and adjustable air suspension made loading cargo easier.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS came standard with a seven-seat configuration, with an optional six-seat version featuring captain's chairs. The second-row seats could slide forward and fold for third-row access, with a long wheelbase providing excellent legroom. Cargo space was 17.4 cubic feet with all seats in place, expanding to 84.7 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. The GLS offered power-folding seats and a power tailgate, with the air suspension aiding in loading cargo. However, some ergonomic issues were noted, such as the touchscreen being difficult to reach and the center console grab handles lacking a clear purpose.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover featured a new Pivi Pro infotainment system with a 13-inch touchscreen, offering sharper graphics and quicker responses. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with a wireless charging pad. The Meridian audio system provided excellent sound quality, with an optional 35-speaker upgrade available. Other tech features included Amazon Alexa integration, remote automated parking, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS came with the MBUX infotainment system, featuring a 12.3-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and a 13-speaker Burmester audio system. The system offered multiple control options, including voice recognition, a touchpad controller, and steering wheel touchpads. The voice recognition system was particularly effective, allowing for hands-free operation. However, the touchpad controller was found to be overly sensitive, and the navigation system had some issues with route suggestions.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover came standard with features like frontal collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and a surround-view camera system. While crash test ratings were not available, the Range Rover's safety features performed well during testing. However, some advanced features found in competitors were not included.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a comprehensive list of standard safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and a surround-view camera system. Additional features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist were optional. Crash test ratings were not available, but the GLS provided a robust suite of safety technologies.
