Launched in the early 2000s, the original Edge was one of the first midsize crossover SUVs, sporting car-like styling that sharply contrasted the more traditional-looking Ford Explorer of the time. However, new-car buyers realized they liked the roominess of three-row SUVs like the Explorer more, and interest in the two-row Edge waned.

Now, however, car shoppers are once again eyeing two-row midsize SUVs, this time as an alternative to sedans. The Edge is now part of a growing market segment that includes the Chevrolet Blazer, Honda Passport, Hyundai Santa Fe, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Murano, and Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.

Yet while market dynamics have changed, the Edge hasn’t. The current second-generation Edge dates back to the 2015 model year, and even a substantial update undertaken for the 2019 model year is quickly receding in the rearview mirror. The Edge now sits between the much newer Explorer and Ford Escape in the automaker's SUV-heavy lineup.

Aside from some new tech features, the 2021 Ford Edge doesn’t get many significant changes, so we can evaluate it based on our experience with previous model years. As with the 2020 model year, trim levels include SE, SEL, ST-Line, Titanium, and ST.

The 2021 Buick Enclave harkened back to the brand's glory days with its big, shiny, and impressive design. After a period of decline, Buick found its footing by offering globally-sourced and rebadged GM vehicles. The Enclave, the largest of Buick's four SUVs, stood out with its American-made build and premium looks, especially in the Avenir trim, which featured a unique grille, extra brightwork, and polished 20-inch wheels. Inside, the Enclave Avenir boasted a minimalist design with organic forms, polished accents, and luxurious leather, although the wood trim was not genuine. The interior was simple, except for the electronic transmission shifter, which required some getting used to. The 2021 Ford Edge maintained a consistent styling since its 2019 refresh, which successfully integrated the current Ford look with the existing Edge body. The Edge Titanium models featured extra chrome, while the ST trim had a blacked-out grille, 20-inch wheels, and a body kit. The interior, however, showed its age with a design that had been awkwardly updated over the years. The 2021 Buick Enclave's infotainment system met basic expectations with quick response times, good voice recognition, and a user-friendly interface. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were available from the Essence trim, while the Driver Confidence Plus Package, including forward-collision warning, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and more, was standard on Premium and Avenir trims. Adaptive cruise control and enhanced automatic emergency braking were only available on the Avenir with the optional Technology Package. The Enclave received a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA but had a four-star frontal-impact rating. The IIHS gave it high marks, but its Marginal headlight rating prevented it from earning a Top Safety Pick. The 2021 Ford Edge was an IIHS Top Safety Pick, with top ratings in all crash tests and a Superior rating for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention.
