2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz
$59,995
MSRP
MPG:
Min 74 Max 75
Positives
- + Fab style
- + Excellent passenger space
Considerations
- - Peculiar steering feel
- - Bouncy ride
- - Pricey
Summary
Volkswagen’s new halo vehicle goes all-in on nostalgia as it attempts to resurrect some brand identity while moving toward an electrified future. In its North American debut, the ID.Buzz took to the streets of San Francisco, a city now known for progressive policies and tech-forward business, but also where a culture of peace, love, and the Grateful Dead made the original Volkswagen Bus a million-units-sold success.
Verdict: The ID.Buzz’s nostalgia is undeniable. During a day of test driving, we drew stares, questions, and plenty of photographs from onlookers. It's not perfect: the driving dynamics are a bit funny, and we expect its long-term sales success may be tempered by the dramatic styling, short electric driving range, and high price tag. But in the short term, we expect this Microbus reincarnation to be the talk of the town.

2024 Dodge Charger Daytona
$59,595
MSRP
MPG:
Min 66 Max 81
Positives
- + Powerful acceleration
- + Head-turning design
- + Plenty of headroom and legroom
Considerations
- - Expensive
- - Scat Pack variant has limited range
- - Small front trunk
Summary
The new Dodge Charger roars into showrooms in coupe and four-door sedan configuration, not to mention with an available all-electric powertrain lurking beneath its sleek retro-themed exterior. Dodge has made a concerted effort to drag the Charger into the 21st century, without alienating a loyal fanbase that loved the previous Charger’s penchant for tire-smoking antics thanks to its rumbling Hemi V8 engines.
The bad news for some is that the Hemis are gone and never to return. Stricter emissions requirements and the need to modernize the Charger’s solid, yet undoubtedly dated, underpinnings meant a fresh automotive blueprint was required.
The good news is that the design of the Charger is classically handsome, and straight-line speed is a match for any of the outgoing Charger’s brag-worthy zero to 60 mph and quarter-mile times (3.3 seconds and 11.5 seconds respectively).
Verdict: Simply put, many muscle car purists will decry the lack of a growling V8 engine under the hood. Trust us, they don’t know what they’re missing. The 2024 Dodge Charger pairs practicality with boisterous excess, successfully reinventing the brand’s approach to crafting a head-turning muscle car. The biggest caveat we discovered is price-the Charger Daytona is many things, but a bargain isn’t one of them.

2025 Dodge Charger Daytona
$59,595
MSRP
MPG:
Min 73 Max 91
Positives
- + Stylish design
- + Fun to drive
- + Comfortable
Considerations
- - Interior materials feel cheap
- - Sluggish touchscreen response
- - Stereo is lacking
Summary
The first true all-electric muscle car, the Dodge Charger Daytona is a sinister-looking coupe with all of the theater and fury of its gas-powered predecessor. It appeals to our primitive brain with instantaneous acceleration, lots of personality, and head-turning style, but its pricing and range have our analytical side questioning our sanity. Nevertheless, it's a guilty pleasure that we're proud to indulge in.
Verdict: Stylish and fun, but also pricey, the Dodge Charger Daytona EV is not a rational purchase decision.

2025 Genesis GV80
$58,200
MSRP
MPG:
Min 22 Max 24
Positives
- + Stylish design
- + Standard all-wheel drive
- + Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
Considerations
- - Poor fuel economy
- - Uncomfortable seats
Summary
The Genesis GV80 was introduced in 2021 and has proved itself to be a strong contender as a luxury crossover. Although the powertrain remains the same for 2025, the mid-size SUV gets a redesign both inside and out, adding a bit more sophistication, two new exterior colors and some sumptuous interior materials. We’ll see a sporty GV80 coupe with a supercharged engine later in 2025, but for now this traditional crossover is the company’s answer to luxury at an affordable price.
Verdict: Genesis improved the technology of the GV80 for 2025 by adding wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the SUV returns poor fuel economy and the seats are far from comfortable. Still, the GV80 undercuts its European counterparts on price and definitely deserves a test drive.

2025 Mercedes-Benz CLE
$58,000
MSRP
MPG:
Min 26 Max 33
Positives
- + Multiple powertrain options
- + Stylish design
- + Impressive technology
Considerations
- - Cramped back seat
- - Not much cargo space
- - Advanced safety features are not standard
Summary
If you’re looking for a car company that sells pretty much everything, look no further than Mercedes-Benz. Sedans, coupes, plug-in hybrids, EVs, heck… the German manufacturer even offers a wagon. If Mercedes doesn’t have it, you don’t want it. The fact that each vehicle is dripping with excellent design, solid performance and oodles of tech just make the brand even better.
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz CLE-Class is a bit of an in-betweener. Introduced in 2024 as a replacement for both the C- and E-Class coupes and convertibles (or cabriolets, in Mercedes parlance), it offers four seats and three distinct trims. It might not be the most popular model Mercedes offers, but with great acceleration, stylish looks and luxury features that don’t quit, the CLE-Class definitely deserves a test drive.
Verdict: The 2025 Mercedes-Benz CLE-Class isn’t the perfect car for everyone, but for those who want an open-top weekend cruiser with all the bells and whistles, its convertible trims are tough to beat.

2024 BMW 5 Series
$57,900
MSRP
MPG:
Min 33 Max 35
Positives
- + Great ride quality
- + Comfortable
- + Quiet cabin
Considerations
- - Poor fuel economy
- - Not much cargo space (with the spare tire)
- - BMW left the BMW out of the recipe
Summary
Long revered for how they make drivers feel, BMWs are credibly marketed as the ultimate driving machines. However, if the future is digital instead of analog, do driving dynamics still matter? And if not, what does BMW bring to the table? What makes one special? Desirable? Gives it a soul? Driving the all-new 2024 BMW 5 Series suggests that aside from design, technology, and comfort, the answer is not much—at least not in the 530i specification.
Verdict: Driving enjoyment is not a requirement in a luxury car. But it is in a BMW. That’s what separates a Bimmer from the crowd. While the new 2024 BMW 530i is a capable sports sedan that does double duty as a plush people mover, joy is missing from the recipe.

2025 Lincoln Aviator
$57,830
MSRP
MPG:
Min 25 Max 25
Positives
- + Stylish design
- + Impressive technology
- + Great safety ratings
Considerations
- - Poor fuel economy
- - Poor ride quality (22-inch wheels)
- - Cramped third-row seats
Summary
In the midsize, three-row luxury SUV segment, the 2025 Aviator embraces the mid-century modern cues of the past while delivering a calm, unhurried sanctuary for the present. Yet, starting in 2025, this Lincoln simultaneously contains some of the most advanced technology of any of its rivals. Fresh styling and new thematic packages are also available; however, the previously offered plug-in hybrid model has not been reintroduced to the lineup, leaving a twin-turbocharged V6 as the sole engine option.
Verdict: Distinctive without resorting to polarization, the 2025 Lincoln Aviator is a compelling choice for people seeking a powerful, quiet, and comfortable luxury SUV. It’s been around since 2019, yet you can’t consider this Lincoln to be a relic thanks to its undeniable technological sophistication.

2024 Genesis GV80
$57,700
MSRP
MPG:
Min 23 Max 24
Positives
- + Stylish design
- + Powerful engine
- + Impressive technology
Considerations
- - No wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
- - Poor fuel economy
- - Uncomfortable seats
Summary
Genesis introduced the GV80 in 2021, and the crossover SUV is getting a minor refresh in 2025. Still, the 2024 GV80 remains a good choice unless you want to wait for the fancier styling, more high-tech interior, or new supercharged GV80 Coupe coming next year. Otherwise, today’s GV80 is pretty much the same as tomorrow’s GV80, and in some respects, it is the more elegant and traditional choice.
Verdict: Based on our evaluation of the 2024 Genesis GV80, seat comfort is not what it should be. Also, to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you need a USB cable. This Genesis is thirsty, too. But otherwise, we have few complaints about this stylish, safe, and mostly rewarding midsize luxury SUV.

2024 Chevrolet Suburban
$57,600
MSRP
MPG:
Min 18 Max 20
Positives
- + Massively useful cargo capacity
- + Excellent powertrain options
- + Great towing capability
Considerations
- - V8s are not fuel-efficient
- - Technology is underwhelming
- - Expensive
Summary
For most families, the smart vehicle choice is either a minivan or a three-row crossover–something big but built on a car platform, like the Toyota Highlander or the Kia Telluride. But for families that are both big and enjoy big hobbies (think boats and horses), there’s no replacement for a body-on-frame hauler like the Chevrolet Suburban.
Verdict: The Suburban has long been a truck re-fitted to haul people, but its 2021 redesign introduced an independent rear suspension that resulted in more usable third-row space than ever before. Now, three years later, the 2024 Chevrolet Suburban still thrives as a capable and capacious family truckster, and it's a genuinely great option for anyone that needs its special blend of practicality.

2025 Nissan Armada
$57,520
MSRP
MPG:
Min 18 Max 20
Positives
- + Base price carries over from prior generation
- + New off-road capability
- + Standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Considerations
- - Less spacious than some key competitors
- - Finicky hands-free driving system
Summary
The everyman’s version of the Infiniti QX80, Nissan’s full-size SUV gets an expanded range for 2025. It’s still offered in familiar SV, SL, and Platinum trims, but Platinum Reserve has joined the roster and so, for the first time ever, has PRO-4X. We tested both new trims on a first drive program hosted by the automaker in Franklin, Tennessee.
Verdict: Nissan has undeniably improved the Armada with this new generation, and the PRO-4X and the Platinum Reserve trim levels both bring something new to the table. The PRO-4X adds just enough adventure-ready content to make it worth a look to shoppers who may not have considered it before, while the Platinum Reserve challenges the value of stepping up to an Infiniti.

2025 Volvo XC90
$57,400
MSRP
MPG:
Min 26 Max 57
Positives
- + Stylish design
- + Great safety ratings
- + User-friendly technology
Considerations
- - Semi-autonomous driving not available
- - Top-tier sound system costs extra even on top trim
Summary
Volvo has had plenty of news this year, most recently with the introduction of the all-new, fully electric 2025 EX90. But that doesn’t mean the automaker is content to let its stalwart top sellers run on autopilot.
The second-generation XC90 gets its second substantial refresh for the 2025 model year. It’s still offered in Core, Plus, and Ultra trims and with a choice of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, but Volvo has upped the ante. The midsize three-row gets updated styling, materials, and feature offerings, as well as some mechanical tweaks that aim to improve ride comfort and handling. We had the opportunity to experience the T8 and the B5 powertrains, both in Ultra trim, on a Volvo drive program in Europe.
Verdict: The Volvo XC90 was already quite a good vehicle. It’s earned its position as Volvo’s flagship SUV with oft-praised style and substance. For 2025, it has been made even better.

2025 Ford Expedition
$57,400
MSRP
MPG:
Min 22 Max 24
Positives
- + Powerful engines
- + Impressive technology
Considerations
- - Thirsty engines
- - Tech requires additional subscription
Summary
The Ford Expedition isn’t for everyone, but for shoppers who need a combination of interior space and powerful towing capability, it’s one of only a few quality options on the current market. All-new for the 2025 model year, the Expedition retains subdued styling on the outside, but its tech-forward interior looks impressively futuristic. The addition of the new-for-2025 Ford Expedition Tremor means that the Expedition is now prepared to travel further off-road than any before.
Verdict: The Tremor is undeniably cool, and for such a large vehicle, the Expedition is surprisingly easy to drive in everyday circumstances. With a starting price just shy of $64,000 (or nearly $67K for a Ford Expedition MAX), there’s no disputing that Ford’s selling an expensive vehicle. However, both the Expedition and Expedition MAX offer a ton of standard equipment, and given their capability, both are priced in line with the Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet Suburban.

2024 Cadillac LYRIQ
$57,195
MSRP
MPG:
Min 81 Max 82
Positives
- + Stylish design
- + Impressive technology
- + Comfortable
Considerations
- - Poor handling
- - Mediocre build quality in certain areas
- - Small interior cubby storage
Summary
After a shortened 2023 introduction, the 2024 Lyriq is the first full model year of Cadillac's midsize electric SUV. The Lyriq is the luxury version of the GM Ultium EV platform used in other EV SUVs, including the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Honda Prologue, and Acura ZDX. With ample power, just over 300 miles of range, and a properly upscale interior that finally looks different than a Chevy, the Lyriq is a good contender if you're shopping for a higher-priced, two-row electric SUV. We tested a fully-loaded Lyriq Sport at nearly $80,000.
Verdict: As an EV, the Lyriq is average. As a Cadillac, it’s much better than anything else in the showroom. Traditional brand hallmarks, such as a cavernous back seat and a gentle ride, blend with big screens and significantly improved material quality. But it's still not up to the luxury standard that Cadillac promises.

2025 Genesis G80
$57,100
MSRP
MPG:
Min 24 Max 89
Positives
- + Excellent value for money
- + Great ride quality
- + Premium interior materials
Considerations
- - Poor fuel economy
- - Fairly pedestrian performance
Summary
If you’ve got your heart set on a mid-size luxury sedan, the pickings these days seem to be a little slim. And with the Germans dominating the class, those pickings can be quite pricey. However, there is a good-looking, feature-rich, well-priced option that you may have overlooked.
We’re talking about the 2025 Genesis G80. Fresh off a mid-cycle refresh, this sedan leans hard on design, technology and features, offering up a sophisticated drive with curb appeal for days. However, it does so at the expense of performance. Granted, that expense might not break the bank, but it’s something to consider if you value a spirited driving character.
Verdict: There is plenty to like about the 2025 Genesis G80 and it certainly represents good value, just don’t expect to be the quickest car in the class.
2025 Land Rover Defender
$56,900
MSRP
MPG:
Min 18 Max 21
Positives
- + Multiple body styles
- + Multiple powertrain options
- + Fun to drive
Considerations
- - Poor fuel economy
- - Poor handling (on pavement)
- - Poor visibility (to the rear)
Summary
The 2025 Defender lineup includes the 90, 110, and 130. The 90 is the short and stubby two-door, the 110 is the standard four-door, and the 130 is the extended four-door. They’re available with turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, as well as a turbocharged or supercharged V8. They’re all equipped for off-roading right out of the box, but you can add more tech for more challenging situations. The big news for this model year is the high-performance 2025 Land Rover Defender OCTA.
Verdict: There is a Land Rover Defender for almost anyone, and any of them can take you farther into the wilderness than you expect. They’re rugged but refined, comfortable yet capable, and plenty of fun to drive. But the Defender comes at a cost, both on the window sticker and at the pump.

2025 Toyota Land Cruiser
$56,700
MSRP
MPG:
Min 25 Max 25
Positives
- + Stylish design
- + Impressive off-roading capability
- + Easy-to-use technology
Considerations
- - Poor fuel economy
- - Poor handling
- - Uncomfortable back seat
Summary
This two-row midsize SUV is designed for traveling almost anywhere at almost any time. It shares its platform with the rugged Toyota 4Runner SUV and Tacoma pickup truck, and is equipped with a turbocharged hybrid powertrain better at supplying power than efficiency. Additionally, it is more affordable than it has been in the past, but still commands a premium over its primary rivals. The 2025 Land Cruiser is almost unchanged following its 2024 redesign, which introduced the current 250-series model (known as the Land Cruiser Prado overseas) to the United States.
Verdict: There is a lot to like about the Land Cruiser, especially if you don’t care about fuel economy. Our test vehicle averaged 15.7 mpg, falling well short of expectations. That thirst for fuel easily ranks as the worst thing about this SUV. Also, we recommend upgrading from the base 1958 trim level.

2024 Volvo XC90
$56,600
MSRP
MPG:
Min 26 Max 57
Positives
- + Stylish design
- + Comfortable
- + Great safety ratings
Considerations
- - Showing its age in several ways
- - Concerning Pilot Assist behavior
- - Questionable value for money
Summary
When the current-generation XC90 went on sale nearly a decade ago, it marked the Swedish automaker’s pivot from its boxy and boring past to a future defined by design, quality, and technology. Volvo used the XC90’s blueprint throughout its lineup of cars, SUVs, and wagons, building a bridge to its electrified future. Has it overstayed its welcome? Perhaps, and it carries over this year without changes. But having spent a week driving the 2024 XC90 Recharge T8 plug-in hybrid, it remains an appealing choice in the luxury SUV segment.
Verdict: Beautifully styled, inside and out, and offering a range of powertrains that includes a plug-in hybrid variant, the 2024 Volvo XC90 stands out in its field. However, it commands a steep price tag, and its safety tech isn’t as innovative as what you’ll find in some rival SUVs.

2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE
$56,500
MSRP
MPG:
Min 27 Max 33
Positives
- + Comfortable
- + Easy-to-use technology
- + Fun to drive
Considerations
- - Not much cargo space
Summary
The all-new Mercedes-Benz CLE-Class multitasks by replacing both the C- and E-Class coupes and convertibles with excellent results. It's sized just right, with all of the comfort, technology, and refinement expected of the brand. With three models that range from mild to wild, there should be one that easily fulfills your desires.
Verdict: With a starting MSRP of $57,650, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE keeps the German brand competitive in the dwindling four-seater coupe marketplace. Impressive technology and outstanding design make this one of the more interesting new cars for 2024.

2024 Land Rover Defender
$56,400
MSRP
MPG:
Min 18 Max 22
Positives
- + Impressive off-road capabilities
- + Long list of standard interior and safety features
- + Powerful selection of engines
Considerations
- - Handling is more cumbersome than most luxury SUVs
- - Below-average fuel economy
Summary
The Land Rover Defender has a rich history, tracing back to its roots as a go-anywhere vehicle designed for the most demanding conditions. The original Defender was revered for its rustic charm and capability, but when it was redesigned and reintroduced to the United States for the 2020 model year, it was a far more sophisticated vehicle.
The 2024 Defender is perfectly poised to capitalize on the surging popularity of Overlanding, offering both the capability and the aesthetic appeal that enthusiasts crave. Whether you’re embarking on a long-distance expedition or simply outfitting your vehicle to look the part, the Defender delivers with style and substance.
Verdict: For the 2024 model year, the Defender introduces a host of new trims and features, enhancing its already impressive lineup. Notably, the availability of one of its powerful V8 engine options has been expanded, providing drivers with even more choices when it comes to performance and capability. These updates ensure that the Defender remains at the forefront of the SUV market, offering unparalleled versatility and driving enjoyment.

2025 Toyota Supra
$56,250
MSRP
MPG:
Min 31 Max 31
Positives
- + Thrilling power
- + Quintessential sports car appeal
- + Great interior quality
Considerations
- - Choppy ride quality in certain scenarios
- - Driver assistance technology comes at a premium
- - Tight cabin dimensions and visibility aren’t for everyone
Summary
The Toyota GR Supra 3.0 isn’t long for this world, with production expected to end midway through next year. We’ll miss its attitude, sharp looks, even-keeled daily-drivability, and solid driving experience. But tight interior dimensions and tough visibility may limit its appeal.
Verdict: The 2025 Toyota GR Supra offers signature sports car fun, though, not without some compromises.
