The Mercedes-AMG GT 53 4-Door Coupe is a new base model electric hatchback in a lineup that replaces the current gas-powered model. While it’s a base trim level, it still has more than 500 horsepower and a sticker price likely topping $100,000.

What’s New for the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT
Everything is new for the 2027 AMG GT 53 4-Door Coupe. The 53 variant joins the previously announced AMG 55 GT and AMG 63 trims, as the base model. It features a two-motor powertrain instead of the three-motor variants previously announced. It comes with a Response Control dial on the center console to adjust the responsiveness of the electric motors, and a new AMGForce Sport+ drive program that simulates both gear shifts and the sound of a turbocharged six-cylinder engine.
Design
The next-generation AMG GT 4-Door Coupe cuts a familiar shape with some controversial details. From the side, it has a standard fastback design that accounts for the “Coupe” in the name with a sleek rear roof line, and it sits 1.6 inches lower than the outgoing gas model despite the battery in the floor. The body lines are smooth and uncluttered along the flanks, with flush door handles, a simple lower character line, and notable rear hips that hint at the car’s power. The design is slippery, with a low 0.21 coefficient of drag, and it comes with standard active rear spoiler and an optional active rear diffuser.
The details up front are where the design gets questionable, and to a lesser extent, the same can be said of the rear. The nose features a jutting “grille” design with vertical elements, three-prong headlights in the shape of the Mercedes star logo, and a thin air intake just below the hood line. The whole thing comes off as something of a frowning fish face. At the rear, a dark oblong panel houses triple round taillights, also with star shape lighting elements. The look is reminiscent of the Nissan GT-R, though with an extra light on each side.
Powertrain
The AMG GT 53 4-Door Coupe features front and rear permanently synchronous electric motors that provide standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and produce a peak of 536 horsepower and 362 continuous horsepower to go with 590 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes quotes a 3.4-second zero-to-60-mph time with a 1-foot rollout and 3.8 seconds from a stop. Though the motors do provide standard AWD, the front motor only works when its power is needed, and the car has torque vectoring along the rear axle. A two-speed transmission allows the motors to work more efficiently depending on speed.
The battery has 106 kWh of usable power to provide up to 497 miles of range on the more lenient European WLTP cycle. Expect 350-400 on the US’s EPA cycle. An 800-volt electrical architecture allows it to DC fast charge at a rate of up to 600 kW (good luck finding a charger that fast) that can recover 332 miles of range in 10 minutes. It also has an 11-kW onboard charger for at-home AC Level 2 charging. The battery has cylindrical cells, and each cell is oil cooled.

Interior
The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is a four-seater. Mercedes hasn’t announced the standard upholstery, but expect synthetic leather that likely has front seat power controls and seat heaters. Mercedes will also likely make real leather upholstery available, as well as ventilated front seats, massaging front seats, and heated rear seats.
Mercedes has announced that the AMG GT 53 will offer an optional panoramic glass roof that can be transparent or opaque to meet the current need.
Cargo space in the trunk is a decent 14.7 cubic feet, and the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe also has a front trunk with 1.7 cubic feet of capacity.
Technology
The Mercedes-AMG GT 53 4-Door Coupe will have the same screens as the previously announced 55 and 63 models. They include a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14-inch infotainment touchscreen canted toward the driver, and an optional 14-inch touchscreen for the front passenger. It will also have dual wireless cell phone chargers. Also expect standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, and the MB.OS operating system that uses an AI assistant and can be kept current with over-the-air updates.
