Rolls-Royce will end production of the Wraith model after 2021, and for its final year, the big coupe receives no updates to its styling, powertrain, or options list. That said, the Wraith remains imposing and powerful as-is, and its options list is still one of the longest and most expensive in the industry.
The Wraith and the BMW 7 Series share underpinnings, but the Rolls-Royce looks like it plays in a completely different segment, and its eye-watering price tag confirms that it does. Sold in only one trim, the 2021 Wraith starts at an astonishing $343,000—and prices can rise dramatically with a few available extras.
Rolls-Royce has engineered something very special with the Wraith (and we’ll be sad to see it go). The two-door coupe seats four people in quad bucket seats—two in the front, two in the back. The doors open in reverse, as they’ve been designed for a shopper who always has someone opening the door for them, rather than opening it themselves. Under the hood, Rolls-Royce employs a 6.6-liter V12 engine that is, to put it lightly, a thing of beauty. Power output measures 624 horsepower and 605 pound-feet of torque, all managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission and sending everything to rear-wheel drive. As expected, it’s terribly fuel-inefficient; The EPA rates the 2021 Rolls-Royce Wraith at 12 mpg city, 18 highway.
Truly, there’s nothing pragmatic about the Wraith. It’s all about style, speed, and excess. And it features plenty of each. A huge list of options is highlighted by ventilated front seats, a wild selection of upholstery and trim variations, dry-clean-only lambswool floor mats, and Rolls-Royce’s incredible Starlight headliner, which makes the inside of the Wraith’s roof twinkle light the starry sky on a cloudless night.
Although it costs a fortune (literally), seats only four, and gets miserable fuel economy, there is one practical spec: the Wraith boasts a good-sized trunk. It measures 17 cubic feet of cargo capacity, making this a usable grand tourer.
All Wraith models get a native navigation system and an 18-speaker audio system come standard, but like many cars in its price bracket (or close—nothing really lives in a Rolls-Royce’s price bracket), many features are listed as optional. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control, and some safety features (like blind-spot monitoring) aren’t offered at all.
Rolls-Royce is planning to release an all-electric coupe in 2024, but it’s unlikely that this new model (called the Spectre) will be a direct replacement for the Wraith. For now, however, if you want a two-door coupe with presence and panache, start saving for a Wraith.
