For decades, full-size work vans were workhorses offered exclusively by domestic automakers. That changed when Nissan introduced the NV van in 2012, which today competes with the Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana, Ford Transit, and Ram ProMaster. For 2019, the Nissan NV passenger van has been updated with a new center display screen.
Featuring four rows of seats, the 12-passenger NV is available in 3500 S, 3500 SV, and 3500 SL trims. All versions feature the same big, boxy design that favors functionality over style, highlighted by a passenger-side sliding door, rear barn doors, steel wheels, and black exterior trim. For those who want a bit more bling, the SV and SL trims come with chrome bumpers, wheels, and grille.
In S and SV guise, the 2019 NV utilizes a 4.0-liter 6-cylinder motor that puts out 261 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission, that V6 allows the NV to tow up to 6,200 pounds. For more muscle–and a stout 8,700-pound towing capacity–buyers will want to check out the NV 3500 SL. This trim offers a 5.6-liter 8-cylinder engine that boasts 375 hp and 387 lb.-ft, all directed to the rear wheels via a 7-speed automatic. Fuel-economy figures are not available.
Inside, the 3500 S trim includes all of the basic essentials like standard cruise control, power windows and locks, tilt steering, cloth upholstery, and the new-for-2019 7-inch center display screen. A move up to the mid-level 3500 SV sweetens the deal by adding a center console with storage, front and rear 120-volt power outlets, and heated front seats with power adjustments for the driver. That leaves the 3500 SL, home to leather interior trim, automatic climate control, fog lights, telescoping tow mirrors, and a navigation system with a 5.8-inch touchscreen.
Front, front-side, and side-curtain airbags come standard, and higher trim levels get parking sensors, but those looking for a blind-spot monitor or lane-departure warning will be left wanting. Crash tests have not been performed on the NV.
Light on frills and eye-catching looks, the 2019 Nissan NV passenger van delivers a combination of spaciousness and capability that minivans and full-size SUVs simply can’t match.
