There’s obviously something wrong with me, as I’m constantly plagued by things I can’t have. Usually this manifests in ridiculous supercars for which I could never afford the insurance, let alone the pricetag – but money isn’t the issue with the 2011 Ford Fiesta, it’s space. The last time a Ford awakened these feelings, it was after they announced the GT concept, a modern take on a vehicle that more than 40 years ago showed Europe what an endurance race car should be. Dan Gurney was part of that legacy, and at almost 6'3”, they had to craft a bubble in the roof of his car just so he could fit inside. I’m taller than Dan Gurney, and I don’t have a team ready to modify my cars just so I can shoehorn myself inside – and so my Fiesta dream ends.
Or does it? Speaking with representatives at Ford, I’ve been assured that even at 6’4”, I should have no problem fitting in this seventh-generation Fiesta, newly introduced to the American market. This is thanks partially to a standard tilt and telescoping steering wheel, but also due to an increase in legroom needed to accommodate things like a knee airbag. In fact, there were lots of changes made to the Fiesta before importation. So many changes, in fact, that the U.S. model shares only 60% of its parts with its Euro cousin.
Not that a fact like that should matter for most U.S. consumers, as the last time they saw a Fiesta on American soil was likely during the Reagan administration. Despite being in continuous production since 1976, prior to 2010 the Fiesta was sold in the U.S. only between 1978 and 1980 – not exactly a dynasty. Thirty years offers a lot of room for change, so what does the 21st Century Fiesta offer the subcompact consumer?
First, let’s start with its six-speed PowerShift dual-clutch automatic, making its North American debut here in the Fiesta. The dual-clutch technology offers quicker shifts without the need for a torque converter. Add to this the fact that both clutches are dry – another NA debut for Ford - which negates the drag associated with a wet clutch, and Ford claims a 10% efficiency increase over a traditional automatic setup. Combine this with its sealed internal lubrication, eliminating the need for any maintenance over its expected 150,000-mile lifespan, and that’s quite an upgrade.
There have been other U.S.-specific changes, like suspension tuning and more comfortable seats to accommodate the …ahem… “unique” driving conditions on this continent, and while they do little for overall handling, they are a welcome boon to overall comfort. Here, we’ll get the choice of a 5-door hatchback or sedan, in any of five trim levels, all powered by the same 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder (I4) engine, putting out a frightening 119 hp – enough to rocket the little guy to 60 mph in just over 9 seconds.
But the big difference is in how we’ve decided to define “economy car.” When the term was first introduced, it signaled just as much about the quality as about the cost and efficiency of the vehicle. Thankfully, definitions are fluid. Here you’ll find amenities not seen in a subcompact before, like heated leather seats, a sunroof, keyless start, and Ford’s voice-activated Sync system. All of this in a car that will return an EPA-estimated 30/40 mpg, besting its rivals by more than 3 mpg!
So what’s there to complain about? The styling is award-winning, the fit and finish are class-leading, and the available features are found nowhere else in the class. Still, the dual-clutch transmission would be perfect for some steering-wheel paddle shifters, but we are left wanting. A sporty 3-door hatchback version like they get overseas would be nice as well, maybe even in an all-wheel-drive configuration like they've produced for rally racing.
Looks like I’ll still be left wanting.

This is my sons first car, and he fell in love with it the moment he saw it. The car came with all of the bells and whistles such as leather seats, seat warmers, WIFI connectivity, sun roof, and push start ignition. It also came with a very good carmax report: 1 owner, log list of oil changes, and no accidents. Thus far, we have been very happy with this car. As a first car for a 16 year old you shouldn’t be able to get better. Airbags it has 7 of them. You can restrict the speed via my key in the menu system. It’s sporty especially as a hatch back. BUT the automatic transmission is dreadful. Well documented issues with it. So it’s like every time you have to take you’re chances with it.
But it’s a pretty green and looks sporty. It’s easy to drive. Not the sports car he wanted. But it’s a great first car. Sep 01, 2020

The Ford Fiesta is a decent enough car, but lacking what I used to know as Ford quality. Interior parts break, glovebox won't latch, sun visor broke off , mirror fell off. Very aggravating. The 1.6 is a dog on freeway ramps and passing. I work in Los Angeles and commute from the desert over the hill, and without traffic a 45 minute drive but of course reality is a 1.5 hour commute, meaning 3 hours a day in car. Gets good gas mileage, drivers seat comfortable but sometimes I just can't tolerate a drive home so I stay in LA for the night 1-2X week. And only work 4 days a week so not all that bad of a commute. It was a service dep't loaner at Dealer, had only 8,200 miles when I bought it in 2013 and I got a GREAT price, free oil changes for life, extended bumper-to-bumper warranty. i dunno, maybe all those little things breaking were from abuse..people driving it that simply didn't care, or ticked off at dealer for keeping their car for days. Fact is I regret buying this car, the deal just seemed too good to pass on at the time. Need more get-up-and -go.Aug 14, 2014

This car has some cool features for an economy car like heated seats, ability to change ambient lighting colors, SiriusXM and Blue Tooth.
I also like that it is easy to park, I can always find a good spot that this car fits into. It is also reliable. It can sit at the airport for a couple weeks & start right up.Oct 10, 2013

I really enjoyed this car. It was great on gas and was very fun to drive. Has a lot to offer for a basic car that you can get for under $20K. It has some cheap interior though, but I guess that is what you get for a cheap car. It handles great, but it has some weird shifting in a parking lot or neighborhood. Dec 17, 2012

Gas mileage and pick up is excellent, corners like a mini cooper at half the price. Friends are amazed at the amount of room inside considering the exterior size. The sunroof is a nice feature to have on an economy car, it is not even offered on some competitors.Feb 18, 2012

Pretty nippy for a 1.4 diesel. Nice lil boost from the turbo, so ideal for around town & commuting to and from work. Good in tight twisty roads but not so good on motorways...after around 80mph the power seems to drop. Cant really complain as its not built for top end speed. The interior is quite good as you would expect for a lil ford, but I did get a pair of seat covers to protect the seats from getting dirty or damaged. Space wise its pretty good as I did manage to get myself & 3 adults including luggage to the airport to go holiday, (ok it was a bit of a squeeze but we got there). I love the exterior styling, very sleek and smart in the metallic black, just got to get some rims for it. The running costs are great, easily get 54mpg. Maintenece is covered so not an issue. Around good lil car thats fun to drive, nippy around town and really easy to park due to flat rear screen. Must admit I do love this car as I feel completely comfortable driving this car & confident that it will do most of the things I ask it to.
Will be getting alloys and a performance superchip for it to give it a bit more style and a bigger punch. Nov 27, 2011

I absolutely love my 2011 Ford Fiesta SEL. It looks great, even as a sedan the styling is rakish and forward (IMO). I have a 5 speed manual instead of the 6 speed "auto" but I still get great gas mileage (around 35 combined)!
The handling is excellent and it holds the road very well, the ride is not as cushy as some other small cars but it is a very responsive car. The electronic power steering can be described as "nimble".
The interior is suprisingly roomy for a small car, at least in the front - I haven't tried the rear seats yet. I have the IA key version, and its nice to be able to leave the key in my pocket and use the button to start the car. The door locks are nice too, just hold your thumb on the square and the door unlocks (as long as the key is on your person).
One thing I would have liked is a center arm rest, but this is supposed to be a small car and there isn't much room between the seats for an armrest.
The engine is peppy, and shifting is crisp. This car is a blast to drive! It's a load of fun. If your looking for a nice looking small car that's fun to drive and gets excellent gas mileage, look no further! You have found your car.Jan 03, 2011

both inside and out. It's both comfortable and fun to drive! It's kinda
like a go-kart with some nice seats and a great sound system. It's
great on gas, performs extremely well, cheap to own and Ford's the
most reliable domestic auto company right now, better than even
Honda and Toyota in many categories! The Microsoft Sync system
works without a flaw and is very easy and the sales staff I've been

Lots of features. Very good quality. Has the new 1.6L ti-vct engine.6-speed automatic transmission. Really good on gas. Very nice interior with two tone leather seats and nice stereo. Going from the Ford Five Hundred to the Fiesta is night and day. Granted, the physical change in interior room was strange at first, but eventually the vehicle started to feel larger than it really was. Drives exceptionally well which adds to the fun factor.
Agile and quick for a little vehicle - though the automatic does lag a bit. A manual tranny would have been the great, but the universal answer to that is that the wife wants to be able to drive it.
