My car will accelerate while in park but when i put it in reverse or drive it won't move and shuts off why is that?

In this second generation of what is now a crossover, the Equinox enjoys new direct-injection engines, a new look, and some add-on features. Available in LS, LT, and LTZ trim levels, this crossover shares its platform with the GMC Terrain and is available with front- or all-wheel drive across the model lineup, with all-wheel-drive versions getting a limited-slip differential. All engines and configurations come with a six-speed automatic transmission.
New for the 2010 model year are two direct-injection engines that promise performance comparable to last year's engines with improved economy. The base engine, a 182-hp, 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder comes 3 horsepower shy of meeting the power output of the outgoing model’s base 3.4-liter V6. However, comparing torque the same way leaves the new 2.4-liter coming up 38 lb-ft short. The trade-off for that power loss is an increase in fuel economy, an impressive 21/30 mpg.
With a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 pounds, the 2.4 won’t serve everyone’s needs, so Chevrolet also offers an optional 3,500-pound-capable 3.0-liter direct-injection V6. Producing 255 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque, this engine misses the outgoing 3.6-liter V6’s horsepower number by 9 and also falls short in torque, by 36 lb-ft. However, fuel economy is increased to 18/25. Special attention has been paid to the fuel injection system in this engine, with rubber isolators added to the fuel rail, eliminating metal-to-metal contact for quieter operation.
A four-wheel independent suspension enables nimble handling, and a wider front track than last year’s model's increases control and road feel. The power-assisted steering is now electronically controlled, which GM claims accounts for an increase of 11 miles per tank of gasoline. GM hopes these changes will result in better handling and composure over previous years, a point of contention with testers and owners alike. Four-wheel antilock disc brakes with brake assist come standard on all models, as well as traction control and a full range of airbags.
The new Chevrolet grille is found here, with its aggressive fender flares and retooled headlights, and the design continues throughout both the vehicle and the rest of the Chevrolet line. Similarly, the interior has been redesigned with a dual-cockpit layout and new controls and readouts as part of GM’s commitment to increasing the quality, fit, and finish of its vehicles, an area where its competitors have had the advantage of late. The overall redesign has also led to a more aerodynamic profile, resulting in a drag coefficient drop from 0.42 to 0.36. Couple this with the redesigned engines, no roof rack, and the optional 17-inch, low rolling resistance tires, and I wouldn’t be surprised if buyers will better the EPA's estimates. In fact, an ECO button on the dash will remap the transmission's shifting strategy and provide a more aggressive fuel shutoff when coasting, something the EPA takes into account only as part of an average when testing, so these are not unreasonable speculations.

over 112,000 miles still a great car, pioneer premium sound is great, michelins handle extremely well. my wife falls asleep on trips very comfortable ride. pioneer premium sound rocks with xm radio, low maintenance repl tires at 90k, brakes at 95k, 35 miles back and forth to work daily no problems. i would buy another equinox.Dec 16, 2014

I drive it from client to client and it does a great job for me. When I check my average speed it's never over 35mph, and I still get 27+ mpg! it's the 4 cylinder engine. Stop and go traffic city driving. I've gotten 32+ the few times that I've had it on the interstate.Aug 05, 2014

The SUV handles very well in all terrains and snow/ice. The acceleration could be quicker but it is not the worst either. I feel very safe driving this SUV and putting my twins it! I like that I can even play a DVD in the infotainment system when the SUV is in park!Jul 17, 2014

Not a bad car. Was in love with it for years. My dogs can't get in anymore. The back slopes weirdly when the back seat is removed. It annoyed my dogs. All in all, if not for them, I would've kept it. Back deck too high.Apr 27, 2014

I genuinely LOVE this car! Its stylish, affordable, comfortable, and reliable. There can occasionally be a blind spot on the left side I have noticed. It is never in the shop, only for standard maintenance and oil changes. The gas mileage is fantastic for an SUV; around 25mpg as a daily driver and 32 mpg on the highway/interstate. The acceleration can be a bit slow as with most SUV's, but the braking and handling is superb. I feel extremely safe and in control while driving this car and it can be fun to drive!
The only complaint I have about this car is the same complaint I have with all SUV's... they are a bit slow for me.Apr 12, 2014

I like the way it handles and I feel very safe in The Equinox as it has lots airbags, front and sides! Good gas milage as it averaged 25.6 in town and highway combined! I like the simplicity of all the controls and gauges! The cruise controll is great and I like the menu that is loaded with information about the vehicle. The Equinox handles very well. It has a smooth and quiet ride. The engine, even though I have the smaller engine with FWD, gives plenty of power on the highway and up hills. I haven't had my car that long but it seems to be a lot less thirsty than my previous car. The interior of the car is roomy and the dashboard is clearly and logically laid out. I love the rear park assist and the back-up camera. The car is a lot of fun to drive but it also feels very safe. It also has On-Star which gives me added security. I would recommend this car to anyone who wants a mid-sized car with a lot of room for passengers and "stuff".Apr 19, 2010

The Equinox is fun, drives and handles very well.
It has not needed any repairs of any kinds.
The new styling for 2010 is great! I get comments or questions on it almost daily, usually in a parking lot somewhere.
I am getting twice the mileage as my trade in, so I am very pleased with the mileage and money I'm saving on gas.
My only major complaint is that without mud flaps, the car gets really dirty driving in wet weather. I'll be getting front & back flaps from the dealership very soon!Feb 18, 2010

This Equinox rocks! We chose the LTZ, nav and sunroof for all the amenities and he 4 cyl motor for in-town economy. So far we love the comfort, room and gas mileage - about 22 city with the motor still not broken in. We test drove everything from the Lexus to the Pilot, and think the Chevy is the right car at the right time. Chevy did their homework. If you are in the market for a SUV, test drive an Equinox. Its a very nice car. 4 wheel disk breaks, and abs do well in the snow. Very little to no torque steer.
Ride quality is that of a sedan (you can feel every bump).
The performance is exactly what you expect to come from a 4 cylinder. Mileage isn't as good as advertised. It gets an average of 24 city and hwy driving. I get the maximum mileage going 55mph (63mpg avr.). Any higher, and it starts cutting into the mid 30's and high 20's to drag.
The interior is absolutely stunning for an LS. The interior lighting on the dash is just spectacular, and what can I say? I love the flip keys. The back rows have really nice leg room, but no way to lean back without moving forward. The sound quality is great as well.
Its pretty good handling and alright torque. When in manual mode, there is a lot of delay on the change. But nice RPMs! (I hit 8k)
Only wish there were more ponies and better fuel economy...

Accelleration at speed, find it needs to have the peddle pushed to the floor to accellerate. Use of the paddle shift makes it better by shifting to only 5th gear.

The vehicle has performed better than advertised with mpg in
town at 25-26 and on the highway at 32. Very comfortable
ride, roomy interior, the power lift-gate is worth the extra
price. The backup camera is a great asset for this vehicle and
should be standard equipment for all SUVs. I think Chevrolet

I bought my 2010 Nox LTZ on the last day of the Cash for Clunkers program. I traded in a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan with 140,000 miles. I had to drive to Michigan from Alabama to find one with the features I wanted. I was originally looking for the 4 cyl version for the fuel economy, but was unable to find one in an LTZ. Also agonized over the interior color but am very satisfied now that I have settled on the Black/Light Platinum.

So far the SUV has been wonderful to drive and a joy to own. I get frequent comments and questions about it and often see people checking it out when it’s parked in the parking lot of a restaurant or store. I had a 900 mile test drive coming back from Michigan and it was just a pleasure to drive. I enjoyed all the gadgets and after more than a month am still learning all the capabilities of the electronic wizardry.
Some Positive Observations:
All windows have express down. Usually only the driver’s window is so equipped….nice touch.
The Drivers Information center located between the Tach and Speedometer gauges adds useful detail when using the NAV system.
I knew I wanted to NAV system but I didn’t realize how much I would come to love and rely on it. I will never be lost again.
Cup holders have a rubber insert that grips the cup making it virtually impossible for a cup of coffee to fall out of the holder. Something that was fairly common in my Caravan.
I thought the Remote start would be a cool feature to have but it’s actually useful. In Alabama, the heat can be oppressive even in August/September. With a 195 foot range, I can start the car while I’m walking toward it and by the time I reach it, the AC has cooled the cabin to make it comfortable. No more getting into a oven hot car.
I like that I can set a separate EQ for each favorite channel and audio source I select.
The headlights are far better than any other car I’ve ever had. Distance and clarity is greatly improved.
A GM car delivered with Michelin Tires instead of some cheap set of Firestone or General brand tires. Way to go GM!
Some Negative Observations:
Driver’s Seat Leather not pulled taught in one corner so it has a funny wrinkled look in that corner of the seat.
Front headrests look great… Rear headrests appear as if headrest was wrapped in leather by an amateur or a small child. I will be taking it to the dealer for both of these issues.
Pioneer 10 speaker system is good but not great. I have had cars with Bose and Infinity systems that sounded better. There is not as much bass as I expected from a system with a subwoofer. Also, the audio sounds good a low and moderate volume but seems harsh at louder volumes. Tone adjustments have not been able to improve this. Most people will not notice this and it could just be my 51 year old ears.
When accelerating moderately hard, the vehicle accelerates smoothly at first but then there is a boost of energy similar to the delay you experience with a turbo charger. I don’t drive it hard very often so I am still evaluating this anomaly.
Will update as I notice more.

Roof columns are wide restricting the outside view, there is too much chrome on the dash causing glare, and the seat belt is hard to buckle because the latch is low and the center console is large so even with my skinny rear end I have trouble latching the seat belt. The power window controls are hard to reach with my large arthritic hands.

I have one. I got 28 mpg on the first tank in mixed driving and Interstate cruising at 74mph. The vehicle is fantastic, and although I’m used to driving sportier vehicles, I do not feel penalized by the peppy 4 cylinder, great suspension and sound deadening. The styling is great as is the fit and finish. As far as GM engines are concerned, we traded in a GM 3.1 L engined vehicle with 233,xxx miles on it that would travel all day long at 8o+ mph and spent its last vacation going to Washington DC from Atlanta. So far nothing new has been added. Anybody else notice this or is it on my end? My infotainment system went belly up, no heat, AC, turn signal noise, display screen all squiggly lines. Dealer says no longer serviced, charged a diagnostic fee and said sorry and good bye. Used units need to be reprogrammed in by the dealer and here they won't touch it, have 4 GM dealers within 40 miles and no one wants to deal with it. Say goodbye to dealers from here on out, and maybe GM products all together. Found an aftermarket system that will do everything but turn signal noise, getting it installed as i write this. Any ideas on how to hook up some signal general into the turn signal circuits?

There's a clunk sound in the drivetrain when going from coasting to accelerating (or vice versa) at low speed, say below 25 MPH. It's not very loud, but noticeable, and happens more when the engine is cold. Is this necessarily the transmission, or are there other drive train components that might be at fault? The car has a 4 cyl engine, with front wheel drive only.
