The highly successful MAZDA5 returns for 2009 with no major changes. Built on the same platform as the MAZDA3, this minivan has more passenger capacity than the MAZDA6.
The MAZDA5’s three trims are all powered by a versatile 2.3-liter, DOHC four-cylinder engine that features variable valve timing to produce 153 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. The base MAZDA5 Sport comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission or an optional five-speed automatic with manual shift. The midlevel Touring and top-of-the-line Grand Touring include the automatic as standard equipment. Powering the front wheels, the 2.3-liter engine achieves an EPA rating of 22/28 mpg with the manual transmission and 21/27 mpg with the automatic.
The MAZDA5’s short turning radius, smart handling, and good steering feedback impress reviewers. They find it stable in crosswinds and its four-wheel ABS disc brakes solid with good pedal feel. However, fully loaded, the 2.3-liter engine has its work cut out for it, and drivers need to plan ahead for freeway merges and passing on two-lane roads. Overall, reviewers find the MAZDA5 a more sporty driver than other minivans.
The well planned out cabin features a broad dashboard and high seating position. The standard tilt and telescoping steering wheel combines with a manual seat-height adjuster to provide a comfortable driver fit. Interior materials are suited to this price point and evidence good assembly quality.
Six passengers fit comfortably, if the two in the third row are children. The first and second rows are roomy with lots of headroom, while the third row not only gets cramped but also difficult to reach. The second-row bucket seats do fold down and slide, which helps third-row accessibility. Fold down the third row and 44 cubic feet of cargo space is available. With both rear rows folded down, 70.9 cubic feet of cargo space is available. You'll find hidden cargo trays under the second-row seats and rear cargo floor. Rear sliding doors and a single-piece liftgate make for easy interior access.
The MAZDA5 Sport comes with air-conditioning, cruise control, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel that includes cruise and audio controls, power accessories, remote keyless entry, a four-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with auxiliary jack, roof rack, and 17-inch alloy wheels, among other features.
The Touring trim adds a 6-CD changer, spoiler, side extensions, two more stereo speakers, and some interior and exterior trim pieces. The Grand Touring trim upgrades the interior with heated leather front seats, xenon high-intensity discharge headlamps, and other luxury appointments.
Standard safety equipment across all trims includes dual-action front airbags, front-seat mounted side airbags, side-curtain airbags for all three rows, ABS disc brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, and a tire pressure monitor.
