For its second year on the market, the three-door front-wheel-drive wagon version of the petite Cooper offers a lot more cargo versatility and enough rear legroom to actually fit two adults in the back seat on short drives. The 2009 Cooper Clubman appeals to those who love the MINI's retro looks, but want a bit more practicality.
For 2009, the Clubman, like the Cooper, gets a new high-performance John Cooper Works trim. This joins the Base and sporty S versions. Though it uses the same 1.6 found in the S, it includes a bigger turbocharger and special exhaust tuning to achieve 207 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a 6-speed short-throw manual transmission, it also features an overboost switch that boosts torque to 208 lb-ft. It adds larger Brembo brakes and stiffer springs and shocks to the already sport-tuned mechanics of the S. Both performance trims ride on 16-inch wheels with run-flat tires, while the Base comes standard with 15-inch wheels and all-season tires.
Base trims are powered by a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter inline-four, delivering 120 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque, while the turbo 1.6 in the S ups those numbers to 175 and 177. Both Base and S can be equipped with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters. While the S hits 0-60 in 7 seconds (slightly slower than the Cooper version because of the Clubman's extra size), the John Cooper Works reduces that number to the high 6s. European versions feature engine idle cutoff and regenerative braking, along with a diesel engine, for improved fuel economy. All trims include 4-wheel ABS brakes with brake assist and hill start control. Dual front-side and side curtain airbags for all rows are standard. New this year for all trims, dynamic stability control incorporates traction control for improved handling on slick surfaces.
The 2009 Cooper Clubman seats four in two rows. At 9.5 inches bigger in length and 3 inches longer in the wheelbase, it adds 3 inches of rear legroom (now 32 inches) and 60% more cargo room to the Cooper. Trunk capacity starts at 9 cubic feet and expands to 32.6 with the rear seats down. Rear seats split-fold 50/50, but do not fold flat. Entry and exit to the rear seats can be tight, as they do not have their own door. The Clubman features only two doors and one reverse-hinged narrow rear passenger door that opens only in conjunction with the front door. Cargo access is via a barn-door setup in the back, each opening independently and each with its own window wiper. Unfortunately, some reviews mention that the two-tone trim around these doors actually creates a major blind spot to the rear.
The 2009 Cooper Clubman Base trim offers tilt and telescopic steering, full power accessories, a CD/MP3 player, and leatherette upholstery and trim. The glovebox also offers cooled storage for beverages. The S and John Cooper Works are essentially the same, but add bolstered sport seats and foglights. All Cooper Clubmans can be customized with a long list of both factory and dealer-installed options.

My MINI is great on fuel, has great handling and zippy acceleration at highway speed. It has surprising cargo space without passengers and solid construction overall. Unfortunately, my travel profile and my driving desires have changed since purchasing the vehicle; the MINI is not the most comfortable for long drives (perfectly fine for around-town trips) and some of the interior elements are low-end. I am looking for more pin-to-the-seat power and comfort for longer drives; the 1.6L I4 Turbo is great for the platform, but now I want a bigger one. :)Dec 16, 2014

This is the most fun I have had driving any car I've owned. It is well balanced and great for traveling. The way the doors open gets as much attention as a retractable hardtop on a BENZ. I really enjoy this car. She is designed to hold the road tightly in a corner and to accelerate to feel the tubro.Aug 21, 2014

The brembo Brakes are top of the top ! The shock absorber are made by Delphi, what a shame from BMW... Motor is full all over the revs. Please give again my Subaru with its four wheels drive for snowy roads !Mar 06, 2014

car fun to drive! with turbo, it's like driving a v-8! it turns, corners, & parks easily. easy to maneuver in traffic. brakes well. gas mileage great, easy on the pocket! impressed with transmission performance. surprising amount of room in the vehicle. rear seats fold down which greatly increases storage space.Aug 14, 2013

I love my MINI and its super quick and Agile. It has no sound deadening so the Motoring experience is loud but super fun. The base audio is terrible so be sure to upgrade. The base seats are also terrible and cost 2 grand for decent upgrades from the factory. I really love driving this car. If you have the means I suggest you pick one up. Feb 07, 2013

The best way of mobility in the city besides bicycle, Is really powerful for something that fit in most of the parking places, It really creates a smile, It costs more than you expect and is really fun to drive. I think the fun driving is starting with MINI.

Performance-faster than most cars on the road.
Build Quality-Built by BMW, they did a great job; no need of repairs
Appearance- great interior and exterior styling.
Ownership- great gas mileage. It gets up tp 40 mile on the highway.

It is more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow! This is the most fun I have had driving any car I've owned. It is well balanced and great for traveling. The way the doors open gets as much attention as a retractable hardtop on a Mercedes. Ours has an automatic and the base engine, which suits us fine. If I was looking to do some track-time with it, the John Cooper Works with the stick would have been a better choice (I have driven it WOW!). We average mid 30's MPG combined, and it is a top pick for front offset crash ratings according to the IIHS (safer than your SUV, bubba!) May 03, 2010

Accelerates Great-go for the turbo, its worth the money
Handles like a dream, the go-cart handling is true!
Pretty solid build quality although there have been a few disappointing rattles so far
Looks great, so far easy to take car of and keep clean.

fun factor. It is small, however, so it requires one to adjust and
minimize the amount of junk one carries around - not
necessarily a bad thing. As for reliability and cost of ownership
- too soon to tell (so ignore the Build Quality stars - I was

Awesome car!
Fun to drive, tight in the corners, agile, plenty of power.
The looks of the hood reminds me of driving an early 50's Chevy pickup - round fenders, round headlights, smooth lines. No sharp corners!
Comfortable inside, can fit 4 people over 6 feet tall!
Love the "barn doors" in back - no head bangin' hatch.

Timing is wrong in the mini
So I just bought a used 2009 Mini Cooper. I had to replace a head gasket . As we were taking the head off the timing chain guide rail broke and had to fix it. So unfortunately due to my best efforts the engine is not in time and have to put it back in time. I am unsure if a timing light is needed or if there is another option I can use.
