In case you wondered, HHR stands for “Heritage High Roof,” and this retro-modern Chevrolet compact wagon combines the 1949 Suburban with the more-recent SSR roadster and shrinks them both. Built on the same frame as the Cobalt, the HHR shows up in 2009 with multiple trims in both regular and “panel” versions. Panel versions have no rear windows and are intended for use as delivery vehicles. Both panel and regular HHRs come in LS, 1LT, 2LT, and SS trims. 2009 is the first year a panel SS is available, which means your pizza delivery can get to your house quicker with help from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and 260 hp.
In accordance with Chevrolet’s transition to ethanol, all HHR models can use E85 Ethanol flex fuel. The LS and 1LT have a 155-hp 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine, and the 2LT packs a little more punch with a 172-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (both trims have 7 more hp than last year), which is available as an upgrade for the 1LT as well. All models come with a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic. The SS has sporty exterior trim along with 18-inch aluminum wheels and electronic stability control. Its interior seating features deep cloth bolsters and color accents, giving it added comfort and a race-car image.
Like a growing number of compact wagons, the HHR has 60/40 fold-down seats to create a more spacious cargo area in the rear, but the rear headrests can catch in the folding process if the front seat is not pushed forward far enough. The HHR can comfortably seat four full-size adults, but taller drivers may have issues with interior headroom.
The HHR protects passengers with dual-stage frontal and head curtain side airbags. Stopping power is provided by the HHR’s four-wheel antilock, front disc/rear drum brakes.
New available features for 2009 are a cell-phone link and a rearview camera.

I bought used Hhr 2009 Ls worst ever the door handles stop working first back ones then from ones then windows fell off track then electrical problems. The radio stopped working the AC worked sometimes the back hatch only locks when battery dies and the battery is in back I hated this car and recall on locks and a few other things where only till 2008 yet they used same recalled parts on 2009 this car is bad design and a death trap.Aug 12, 2023

No the check engine light was on the airbag light was on it had rear bumper damage but the car fax said no accidents or damage reported and when test driving the vehicle the steering wheel was shaking so bad it told me the the front end needed allinment. Mar 25, 2021

This car offers a smooth ride with a powerful I-4 turbo charged engine. It handles turns very well and has lots of power going uphill. The seating is comfortable and adjustable for both the front and back seats. I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a good suv.Aug 13, 2020

This car is amazing for people who need cargo space and great gas mileage. The back seats go down and create so much room for everything. It's also really comfortable for being a smaller vehicle. The cornering, the style, the gas mileage, the power and looks from everyone are second to non. The panel adds so much more to the looks of this car for me, combined with a 5% tinted back window and dark side windows it adds mysterious look. It corners extremely well, the gas mileage had been as high as 41mpg on a FLAT long stretch of road, 32-34 are the norm. With a tune and over 300hp this car is a blast to drive and not feel guilty about it. I love this car and would recommend it to anyone.Feb 14, 2014

I felt spoiled and pampered in this car. Unfortunately I think this little car would be happier in town or in the city. I love the looks of the car, how easy it is to get in and out of. Not at all cumbersome like some lower sitting cars but more like sliding in and out of a small truck or a van. The lumbar support in a heated seat is like going to a spa. First of all I love the"retro" look of the HHR, I had a 53 Chevy panel truck in High School, and it reminds me of it. The model I have is the LT2, we had leather seats added and the factory spoiler, we also have the 2.4 ltr. upgrade which has a very noticeable performance difference over the 2.2 ltr. We are still getting use to the size as we also have a Suburban and a Tahoe. So far the vehicle is great to drive and no quirks around town or on the highway. I would highly reccomend this vehicle to anyone, with many packages and styles available. Another winner from ChevroletAug 05, 2010

Good looks. Practical. Roomy interior for size. 2.4l engine with surprising pep. Respectable gas milage-thus far 26.5 mpg in-town. Professional reviewers noted sloppy or vague steering, quirky braking, and a lack of low end torque. I have not experienced any difficulty with the electronic assisted steering, and the braking seems to be fine. Initially the vehicle lacks pickup, but once into second gear, it shows suprising acceleration for a 4 cylinder engine. Thus far the build quality seems to be solid. The ride is very smooth and quiet. The interior is Spartan and roomy.Everyone likes how this miniwagon looks. Sporty and classicly retro. I believe it possese 5 star front, side, and roll-over ratings. GM Onstar to be considered as well.Nov 05, 2009

my ss is very cool looking but,the best part is it's very fast & still gets 29 mpg on the highway & 25 mpg in town at those numbers it's a great value as an econo box but with pazaz! 4 wheel disc brakes,stabili trac,anti-lock brakes,a great suspension,fab tires & the best looking wheels in the business. and the cargo space is huge for a small suv. this is the muscle car of the 21st century. yep i love my hhr ss!!!! i have zero rattles the car is tight & the sport seats are great,on star,xm radio
cd with 7 speakers with amp great sounds.

Why is my HHR struggling to start?
My car struggles to start as if it were the battery. Had the battery tested and it had no charge so I replaced it. It worked fine for about 12 hours and the car struggles to start again but it seems that the longer it sits the less it has to struggle, but either way it always still starts. Any ideas?

How can I get into the battery in the rear cargo area if my better is dead and I can't open the back?
I hadn't used my HHR for a couple of months and the battery died, I had to use my key to open the driver's door. Tried the ignition and now it won't give me the key back, pushing the door buttons to open the doors doesn't work. I have my spare keys but there's n o place for them on the back hatch. Do I have to have it towed over to the dealer?
