It may be boxy, but the Forester's shape makes perfect sense.
The Forester was slightly updated a couple of model years ago with a facelift and a new rear end, but a meaningful generational change is due out the following year. For now, we get the same boxy-but-beautiful shape we’ve come to love over the years.
As Subaru’s small crossover, the Impreza-based Forester competes in a crowded segment that includes the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, but it’s the AWD Subaru that comes out feeling like the true athlete of the group.
That sporty sensation comes with somewhat unrefined road manners, but the Forester has enough stability where it counts to be comfortable in most circumstances. Where the Subaru comes up a little short against its competition is in fuel economy, where it lands much closer to the SUV side of the spectrum than it does to the car side. That said, new car buyers wanting a more rugged experience will be happy, and won't have to give up everything to get it.

What owners say
"Owners of the 2008 Subaru Forester generally appreciate its reliability, power, and all-wheel drive performance, especially in tough weather conditions. Many have noted its impressive handling and comfort, alongside good fuel economy for an SUV. However, some drivers mentioned issues with noise levels, particularly in the cargo area, and a few encountered minor maintenance concerns."
I love this car! My Forester survived 40,000 in one year and toughed it out through its first Alaskan winter. It has performed flawlessly and has never been stuck in the snow. It gets excellent traction in all types of foul weather and has fairly good gas mileage. Overall, my Forester has been a great car with no problems.
September 11, 2008The car is unassuming until you get up close. The STi body kit and rims give it an aggressive look and the WRX engine gives it plenty of pep. The interior is spartan but comfortable, no overload of electronic gadgets (aside from the AUX in port on the dash - which I love). I took it on a 1,000 mile road trip with two dogs and was very happy with how it rode and handled, especially in snowy weather.
June 14, 2008Good car and value just ran into a few small issues that should have been addressed before I got the car other than that because I know how to work on cars its not a big issue

August 8, 2022Love the car all around.. looks amazing. it handles perfectly on corners not much body roll which is fantastic for an suv but that is thanks to the boxer engine that it has. The front hood scoop gives it a very egressive feel to it what also is attractive. the sun roof is huge. It goes all the way back to the second row
July 1, 2009It is a great car. It may not be the best looking car, but it is reliable. I have had one maintenance problem, but my Subaru is a repaired salvaged title. It is pretty noisy in the back/cargo area. It has AWD so handling is great, and has performed fairly well off road and in weather. It has decent acceleration and braking. It has gotten pretty good gas milage, better on the highway. Mine is standard transmission, so very fun to shift and accelerate.
October 25, 2011After 3 months and 6 050 kilometers I must say I am impressed with this vehicle. I have never driven an AWD vehicle before and I must say is makes a difference in handling, acceleration, braking....cant wait for the next snow storm. Driving comfort is great, basic radio system is acceptable, instrument panel is nicely layed out. Only negative aspect that bothers me is the fuel consumption.......but the Forester is not a Yaris so I shouldnt complain.
July 6, 2008Great car, for the long haul. Peppy. Great value.
August 28, 20212008 Subaru Forester 2.0 X - 5MT dual range (Latin american market). Gets delivered next saturday!!! Can't wait! Trading in my 2001 Forester, did its job great, no whining - ever! November 23, 2009Absolutely love my car. Great power and dependability.
May 1, 2008The car is good for its age and mileage. It drives well on the highway little shaky in city, but overall good! My rating is 4 stars after 24 hours with the car.
