For 2008, its fourth year in production, the Mercury Mariner compact SUV received a major overhaul, both inside and out. Exterior features include a more prominent satin-aluminum grille, a revamped front end, new headlights and taillights, new side panels, and a redesigned rear bumper.
Interior improvements include a new dash and console, as well as ice blue interior lighting, satin-pewter and chrome trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, available two-toned leather-trimmed seats, and an MP3 audio input jack for the stereo system. Also new is Electric Power Assisted steering.
The 2008 Mercury Mariner is available with a choice of engines and trim packages, as well as with available all-wheel-drive. The standard powerplant is a 2.3-liter inline-four engine that produces 153 horsepower, though for only about $1,000 more you can have the 3.0-liter V6 that produces a more respectable 200 horsepower. A Mariner hybrid is also available. A four-speed electronic automatic transmission with overdrive is standard.
Mercury's optional Intelligent 4WD System monitors traction 200 times per second and automatically determines exactly how much torque to send to the rear wheels to minimize slip, according to the automaker.

My 2008 mercury mariner keeps dying on me anytime Im going over 50 or 60 miles an hour. Its starts chugging and jerkimg then all the lights come on I rapidly lose speed and power then I have to coast off the highway or road to pull over to the side but then it starts right back up again. I just had both manifolds and the catalytic converter changed and fixed and its still doing it. And someone said I have to get my mass air flow sensor cleaned off but im at my wits end with it. I only have 54000 miles. Its Tranmission is skipping, and leaking oil. I had the oil changed when I was suppose to . Had the brakes replaced on the front. I keep it in the garage. I dont drive it much. Bought it brand new. I baby it. Its a 2008. It is still going. You really cant tell it leaks.. But you can feel the transmission slipping. I just want to cry..Jul 05, 2023

Perfect smaller SUV, for my daughters second year of driving. Nicely equipped Premiere Edition.

I'm someone who has owned several sports cars so this SUV was a big shift for me. I feel like with the power of the V-6 and the additional cargo space available, it's been a happy medium between other 4 cylinder competitors and the larger "Trucks" that make up the bigger SUV classes.Dec 28, 2014

Like the all wheel drive. I have never slipped in winter at all! Very versatile. Roof rack worked out well for kayaking. Tow package pulled my 5 x 10 trailer. Leather was a blessing. Served me well in all my needs.Nov 06, 2014

Good leg room for a 6 foot person. Comfortable rear seats. Handles very good in all conditions. Like the heated seats on a frozen winter day. SAT radio is great with the front and rear speakers. Moon roof is fun in summer or nice days.Mar 13, 2013

This is mainly my wife's vehicle, so I don't drive it much. It is a very nice vehicle (it is a Premiere) and has almost all of the options available. It dropped the transmission at 2500 miles due to a recall, but it was under warranty and was replaced at no charge. It has been a great vehicle in the snow and continues to perform very well. Gas mileage has been decent, as well. Best observed was 27, worst has been about 12. Overall fuel economy has been 18.4. Dec 04, 2010
