After a major interior and exterior overhaul last year, the 2009 Mercury Mariner focuses on performance-oriented updates. The four-passenger crossover gets one new engine and ups the horsepower on another, with the automaker claiming better handling and improved fuel efficiency. With SUV sales lagging due to rising gas prices, Ford hopes the updates reinvigorate its consumer base. But even with the extra power, the Mariner's styling and performance improvements still leave it behind the Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson.
Replacing the old 2.3-liter four-cylinder is a 2.5-liter version that adds 17 more horsepower for a total of 170 hp (that's an 11% increase). Equipped with variable valve timing, it adds 1 mpg to fuel economy ratings. The optional 3.0-liter V6 returns, but with 230 hp, up 30 from 2008 and reducing 0-60 times by nearly 2 seconds. Both engines are paired with a new 6-speed automatic that replaces the outdated and clunky 4-speed. The new transmission feels smoother and brings the crossover more in line with other vehicles in its segment. Optional intelligent 4WD adds extra security by automatically distributing torque between the front and rear wheels when it senses slippage.
New 16-inch low-rolling-resistance tires also contribute to improved fuel efficiency, along with more aerodynamic front and rear fascias that add a front chin spoiler and rear wheel spoilers. Enhancements to the suspension, which include a larger rear stabilizer bar, improve overall handling. Though not yet rated in crash tests, the 2009 Mariner comes with standard traction and stability control, 4-wheel ABS brakes, and dual front-side and side curtain airbags for both rows.
The 2009 Mariner takes its environmentally conscious changes to the interior by switching to soy-based, rather than petroleum-based, upholstery. The crossover seats four or five, with 60/40 split-folding rear seats and a spacious 29-cubic-foot cargo bay that expands to 66 cubic feet with the seats down. An optional roof rack adds more storage space. Legroom averages 41.6 inches for front passengers and 35.6 in the back seat.
Already well-equipped with full power features, cruise control, leather and chrome trim, and a CD player with MP3 jack, the 2009 Mariner now offers the Ford SYNC entertainment and communications interface (standard on Premium trims, optional on all others). This year the system adds a 911 Assist feature and displays Vehicle Health Reports. Sirius satellite radio is also newly standard and includes real-time traffic and weather when bundled with the optional navigation system. The Premium package ups the high-end factor with a power driver's seat, Alcantara leather upholstery, Bluetooth, wheel-mounted audio controls, and a 6-CD changer.

This is an excellent car for a 2009 car. It has a noise though in the passenger side when you turn right and/or move from right to left the car. I ask the seller and they said it is the suspension ShockS, that they may need to be replaced in about 6mo to 1 yr term.Aug 27, 2023

The Mariner we bought is a base model. It has all the features we need. I like this older body style better than the newer one. It’s a little more “truck like” The 3.0 Duratec motor makes plenty of power and coupled with the 6 speed transmission has returned about 21mpg around town. The only complaint I have is there is an annoying rattle in the cargo area that we haven’t been able to isolate. Other than that it has been a solid vehicle. Of course we have only had it for a week. Time will tell if it is a good value. If I think about it I will revisit this review next year and post an update Aug 12, 2020

with the new engine and transmission i am getting on the freeway 35-37 miles per gallon at the 65 miles per hour area. in town i am getting 24-28 miles per gallon. this is outstanding for a very fast v6. with the addition of "sync" it is a pleasure to send and receive phone calls and text messages all by voice commands and the access to an ipod, mp3 player and a usb device i can use voice commands to play whatever i want to listen to... this is a great value for the dollar and the interior and exterior are first class in looks and safety. I understand keeping up maintenance w/ any vehicle you can expect it to last. But what's the general life expectancy of the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner series? I have 162K miles on my 09 Mariner. Any repair or maintenance I usually get done right away. Can I expect it to last 200K miles? That's the goal.

Drivers Side AC not cold?
Earlier when I was driving I attempted to use the cold AC in my 09 Mariner but only warm air was coming out. The passenger side is fine, cold air coming out with no problem. What could the problem be? It is starting to get beautiful out so don't mind driving with the roof window open. Just want to prepare myself for any repairs.

AC Will not engage
Needed to replace dual radiator fans , because the drivers side would not work , as car started to get hotter the other fan kicked in, the one for a/c and over heating . I also notice that a/c didn't work ,so I thought because of fan that's why. I changed fan and all that is good , fan works when needed.. But a/c never worked. Blower is ok goes from 1 to 4 . The lights turn on for a/c even on high . But no engage . What should I check.first.

Would a new alternator help with steering wheel?
So I just got the alternator replaced in my 09 Mercury Mariner. I noticed the steering wheel just feels more, I can't describe it, I guess responsive. I really enjoy it. Would a new alternator have that effect? Apparently my old one was overcharging. I also got the ignition switch replaced as well.
