This full-size SUV converts to a pickup with the removal of the midgate wall and window and wins fans with its roominess, versatile configurability, and seamless ability to cross over from family hauler to workhorse.
Available in either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, the 2008 Avalanche comes in five trims: LS, LT1, LT2, LT3, and the high-end LTZ. All start with full power features, a CD player, ABS brakes and standard stability control. A 5.3-liter, 320-hp V8 is paired with a 4-speed automatic. It gets around 14/20 mpg city/highway and can tow up to 8,200 pounds. For those needing more power, a 6.0-liter, 366-hp V8 is optional. The engine features cylinder deactivation to improve fuel economy. As you move up the trim lines, you'll find more bells and whistles in the form of leather seats, larger 20-inch wheels (17-inch are standard in the base LS), and heated seats.
The unique feature in the 2008 Avalanche is the midgate wall. The door and window can be removed in one piece, to expand the 5.2-foot cargo bed (45-cubic-foot capacity) to a Ford F-150-like 8-foot cargo bed. Doing so requires the rear seats to be folded down, reducing passenger capacity from six to three. It also removes any barrier between front passengers and the outdoors. If you just need a pass-through for longer objects, the door can be removed as a separate piece, with the window left intact.
The 2008 Avalanche impresses drivers with its car-like handling, overall appearance, and versatility, but elicits bad reviews for blind spots, fuel economy, low 9-inch ground clearance, and maneuverability. Some say the midgate is cumbersome to remove.

The LTZ model of the Avalanche is loaded, all features worked except the Cruise Control, rear passenger side auto door lock, there is an air bag warning light lit and rear passenger side door handle needs repaired. Over all this car was a great value.Apr 18, 2022

The features are a mixed bag. Most of the trim is intact. The windows and sunroof work correctly. The bad is the rear seatbelt buckle is missing., There are dents all along the body of vehicle and a couple of the trays will not close fully. overall a decent buy for the price.Jun 08, 2020

Loved this vehicle. Reliable and roomy. Also drove great as in it felt like you were driving on pillows when on the road or even when you drive over bumps in the road. Gas mileage was my only complaints as it only got around 15 in the City. It did OK on the Highway at around 19. It has a huge gas tank (32 gallons) so it was expensive to fill up when gas prices were high. Overall excellent vehicle and I recommend buying one if you have the chance.Aug 04, 2014

2nd Avalanche we have owned. We liked our 2003 so much that we had to get another. We upgraded to one with most of the toys. The active fuel management system isn't all it's cracked up to be. The 20" wheel option really let's it handle the road a lot better than a normal 4X4. The covered cargo area is also nice when the using it to haul items in foul weather.Jan 22, 2010

Alright so this is one of the biggest things I really want... but it'll never happen. Power, looks, handling, seating, and cargo are the best perks for this truck to have. I think the style is very different compared to the older Avalanche''s but overall its got that modern touch to it instead of the cubed look to it. Fuel is and will be your worse enemy, it'll cost you an easy $75 just to fill it up and mileage isn't that grand. Cargo, actually has alot of space for such a large SUV but considering the seats are able to fold, it actually gives you an extra 3 to 5 feet of room. Price is harsh... and I mean harsh.. a new one will run you an upwards 50 grand, depending on options.. the one I drove was $56,990 (with all options)Jul 08, 2008

If you need a do it all truck/auto this is for you. At first I found the fuel mileage to be a bit bad, but that was brfore I took out the Honda Ridgeline, I got about 22MPG in this, but the Ridgeline (also known here as the Knock-off) avg 18MPG. This truck had a full 4x4 system, menaing unlike the ridgeline I can go int 4x4 low, The Avalanche also out tows/hauls the honda also, now some will say that this truck and the knock-off are in two different catagorys, but according the the Honda rep, it can compete with it!!! I don't understand that but he was the one to say it. Anyway, I found this to handle well for its size and the few hours That I had it, I was comfortable and it truck accerated great. If it needed a truck I can haul the family around as well as tow/haul a payload this would be the one for me. There are two downfalls of this truck for me, I cant tow a 5th wheel and Mileage, but with that being said the Avalanche still got better mileage than the Ridgeline (Honda Knock-off). Feb 29, 2008

engine whining noise!
Days after changing the oil on my truck a very loud whining noise started to come from my engine . At first it sounded like if it was the belt and tensioners but after i change them all the noise still there.
