For 2008, the A3 offers new wheel designs, an iPod integration feature, and optional rear window sunshades, while the 3.2 Quattro adds standard satellite radio and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. A new Titanium Package is also available, adding a blacked-out grille, piano black interior trim, a black headliner, and larger 18-inch wheels.

Reframe your Audi A3 vantage point from hatchback to wagon, and this upscale entry-level luxury car is instantly more appealing. After all, the term ‘hatchback’ carries the stigma of the econoboxes of yesteryear, while ‘wagon’ is ultra-niche cool with car enthusiasts. See? The design problem has been solved.
Speaking of design, a no-nonsense Germanic ethos guides both the A3’s exterior and interior styling. Austere even as Audis go, the A3’s muted cabin is nevertheless an artful collection of round reference points, consistent tones and textures, and genuine aluminum accents.

A turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard in the A3 2.0T, and it makes 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, the latter available from a relatively low 1,800 rpm. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, with Audi’s S-tronic 6-speed sequential manual automated transmission an option. S-tronic includes paddle shifters and downshift rev-matching for a more engaging driving experience. Official EPA fuel economy estimates measure 24 mpg in combined driving with the manual, and 25 mpg with S-tronic.
The A3 3.2 Quattro has a 3.2-liter V6 engine making 250 hp and 236 lb-ft, comes with a standard S-tronic transmission, and includes standard Quattro all-wheel drive (AWD). This version of the car costs substantially more ($9,000) and it also weighs substantially more, so if you don’t require AWD skip the 3.2 Quattro. Acceleration is only slightly quicker, and this model gets worse fuel economy, averaging 21 mpg in combined driving according to the EPA.
Either version of the 2008 A3 is relatively speedy, getting to 60 mph before 7 seconds have elapsed, and S-tronic is remarkably satisfying to actively use, even if it can feel unnatural when driven in fully automatic mode. The A3’s steering is light but delivers plenty of feedback, and the car strikes a terrific balance between ride quality and handling capability.

With a starting price of nearly $26,000, you’re paying mainly for the four rings on the A3’s grille and not for a substantial upgrade in terms of equipment. For example, while dual-zone automatic climate control is standard, leather upholstery is an option.
Of course, you can pay extra to equip the car with lots of features, commensurately inflating the price tag. The S-line option package adds sportier styling details and a sport-tuned suspension, while the Premium package equips the car with 12-way power-adjustable front seats and a long list of convenience features. Both packages include leather seats.
In addition to its V6 engine, standard S-tronic transmission, and AWD, the A3 3.2 Quattro includes S-line and Premium equipment, helping to justify its price premium. Options for the A3, depending on the model, include an Open Sky dual-pane glass sunroof, Bluetooth hands-free cell phone connectivity, a navigation system, and a Cold Weather package that installs heated front seats, side mirrors, and washer-jet nozzles.
Get inside the A3, and you’ll find somewhat snug but supportive front seats. High windowsills can make the cabin feel claustrophobic, but people who prefer a low, sporty driving position will like the sensation. Practical storage space is lacking, but the door-panel bins and the glove box are usefully sized.
Backseat room is downright cramped. This is not a good car for carrying passengers unless they’re children who’ve grown out of their car seats. And then, they will complain loudly about not being able to see out the windows. Given what a poor choice the A3 is for carrying people, the new side window sunshade option seems like a wasted effort.
What the A3 is good for is hauling cargo. Behind the rear seat, the A3 offers 19.5 cubic feet of volume when you stack luggage to the roof. Folding the 60/40-split back seat down produces an uneven load floor but allows the A3 to swallow up to 56 cubic feet of your junk into its trunk.

Right out of the box, the 2008 Audi A3 has dual-zone automatic climate control, a CD/MP3 player, and a decent 10-speaker sound system. As part of its long list of standard features, the 3.2 Quattro also has a 6-disc CD changer, satellite radio, and a Bose premium sound system.
Options include a navigation system, Bluetooth hands-free cell-phone pairing for making and receiving calls, and a reversing camera that shows the driver what’s behind the A3 while backing up.

While the A3’s standard stability control and optional reversing camera are great for preventing a collision, the car’s standard dual front, dual front side-impact, and side curtain airbags help occupants to survive a crash. Audi also offers rear side-impact airbags as an option.
In safety testing conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2008 Audi A3 earns a Top Safety Pick rating.

The Audi A3 is a niche-oriented vehicle designed for a specific kind of person. People seeking a fun-to-drive hatchback can get more thrills for fewer bills by choosing the brilliant Mazda Mazdaspeed 3, the redesigned Subaru WRX, or the iconic Volkswagen GTI. If the 3.2 Quattro is enticing, keep in mind the price tag puts the A3 into direct contention with more luxurious sports sedans like the BMW 3 Series, Infiniti G35, and Audi’s own A4.
Still, the combination of German engineering and tuning with conservatively artful design and an eminently useful hatchback configuration could prove irresistible to a specific kind of buyer.

Auch ein Automatik Getriebe wäre schön, aber man kann ja nicht allen haben :-) Dennoch sehr zu empfehlen und ein guter Kauf. Der Verbrauch liegt mit 7 Litern im Schnitt, wenn man aber richtig drauflatscht nimmt der kleine Motor ganz schön Sprit. Im normalen Stadtverkehr jedoch völlig ausreichend.Aug 13, 2010

comfortable, powerful for a 2.0tdi, plenty room for a hatch, quite quick for a diesel but can slide too much on round abouts, also spins quite a bit on take off in the wet. other than that a top car. i love it too bits. that is until get a new one.Jul 17, 2009

A3 Cabriolet is the best little small soft top around.
Sports suspension and good around driving is great.
There is more room in the back than the A4 convertible and holds the road better. The roof folds down in under 10 seconds and can be folded up in just the same time, boot space is large also compared with other models. May 15, 2009

Performance - A near perfect blend between power and economy having a big diesel - providing you don't drive with a lead foot all the time.
Build Quality - first class. Glovebox lid feels a little cheap though, and needs a firm shove to close.

It's sporting, handles well, puts down an amazing amount of power and feels solid. The ride is smooth, but lets you feel the road still. The interior is quiet and well laid out. I enjoy driving it, but want to lower it a bit as it looks a little vanilla still.Sep 29, 2008

I'm on my fourth A3 since 2006. I've loved this car since it went on sale here in the US for the 06 model year. The build is fantastic with the legendary Audi interior quality. Performance is fantastic along with great mileage (real world is 25 city and 33 hwy).
The A3 rides very well in any of the versions, the leather interior is extremely durable and very comfortable on long trips.
The car is the perfect size for my family (3 people including my 7 year old girl).
I really can't say enough about this often overlooked gem and eagerly await the 2009 model update.Sep 16, 2008

BMW nous offrait quelques voitures de chez son co-citoyen Audi pour la comparaison avec la 135i.Evidemment la TT en faisait partie, mais fait plutot bizarre on y avait ajoute la A3.Bon si ca avait ete une S3 j'aurais pu comprendre, mais la S3 n'est pas disponible chez nous au Canada.On avait aussi la succulente R8 mais elle n'est pas vraiment dans la meme classe que la 135i.Donc, A3 c'etait, avec le VR6 de 3.2 litres.Disons que les gens de BMW aurait pu etre plus genereux parce qu'on parle vraiment pas du meme genre de voitures.On est dans la meme tranche de prix, et sur papier les performances sont semblable.Par contre, la A3 est plus du genre luxe pour aller au supermarche que mini voiture de sport.Néanmoins, en Europe la comparaison serait plus valides puisque la BMW Serie 1 est offerte en version 3 ou 5 portes.
La A3 est en fait une plate-forme de Golf restylee par Audi.Pour etre vraiment precis, c'est la Golf qui est construite sur une plate-forme de A3.Si vous ne le saviez pas Audi appartient a Volkswagen, ainsi que d'autres marques comme Skoda et SEAT, quoique ces deux marques ne sont pas importees au Canada.Aussi contrairement a ce qu'on pourrait penser Porsche n'appartient pas a Volkswagen, ils sont dans le meme concessionnaire seulement parce que c'est Volkswagen Canada qui importe les Porsche pour le marche canadien.Donc, Audi appartient a Volkswagen, ca leur en fait une belle jambe.BMW appartient a BMW et Mercedes-Benz aussi est independant.Est-ce que ca change quelque chose?Si on se fit a la A3, absolument pas.C'est seulement qu'on retrouve le V6 de 3.2 litres de la Golf R32 européenne dans la A3.Donc si on additionne toutes les pieces du puzzle, on se retrouve avec une Golf R32 a visage Audi et surtout a prix Audi.C'est tant mieux pour nous, parce que la R32 n'est pas commercialisée ici au Canada.C'est tant pis pour nous, parce que 45 000$ pour une Golf c'est un peu, beaucoup, pas mal chere.
Je vous parlais de VR6 tout a l'heure, c'est parce que c'est effectivement le moteur qu'on retrouve dans la A3 que j'ai essaye.Un VR6 qu'est ce que c'est?Eh bien c'est assez simple, c'est un moteur avec 6 cylindres configuré en V, un V6 quoi.La ou le VR6 est tres different des autres V6 c'est dans l'angle que les deux bancs de 3 cylindres ont par rapport un a l'autre.Dans un V6 conventionnel l'angle est de 45 a 60 degres, dans le cas du VR6 cet angle est de 15 degres.On peut s'imaginer facilement que les cylindres comme tel ne peuvent pas physiquement etre rapproches de cette facon.Si on regardait le moteur de par-dessus, on verrait que chaque cylindre empiette l'un sur l'autre.Solution? chaque cylindre est decale dans l'axe longitudinal du moteur, de cette facon on peut avoir de l'espace pour tous les cylindres et garder notre angle de 15 degre.De plus dans la fiche technique que j'ai ecrite plus haut, j'ai dis que c'etait une tete de moteur a double arbre a cames en tete ( DACT ou DOHC en anglais, pour ceux qui se demandait ce que ca voulait dire ).Ce n'est pas tout a fait vrai, théoriquement dans un VR6 du fait que les bancs de cylindres sont si pres l'un de l'autre on a besoin d'un seul arbre a cames pour les 6 cylindres au complet.Donc on a une tete de moteur a simple arbre a cames en tete ( SACT ou SOHC en anglais ).Dans le cas qui nous interesse, le moteur de l'A3 a deux arbres a cames en tete, un pour chaque banc de cylindre.Mais étant donné qu'on a une seule tete de moteur, eh bien y'a deux arbres a cames a l'interieur donc double arbre a cames en tete.
Vous pigez que dalle?C'est pas tres grave, ce qui est important de retenir c'est que cette configuration moteur permet a Volkswagen de mettre, ce qui est effectivement un V6 de 3.2 litres, a l'interieur d'une petite voiture comme la A3 ou les anciennes Golf GTI VR6.De plus, du a l'ordre de feu du VR6 on a un moteur qui est tres doux.Aucune vibration ne se transmets dans l'habitacle, quoiqu'il doit y avoir quand meme une bonne epaisseur d'isolation dans le cas de la A3.
Performance:
Je vous le dis tout de suite, on parle pas vraiment de performance ici mais plutot d'agrement de conduite.La A3 n'a rien a voir avec la BMW 135i.C'est ce qu'on pourrait appeler une compacte de luxe.Sur circuit c'est vraiment pas fameux.La ou la 135i nous donnait toute l'information voulu par rapport a ce qui se passait au niveau des roues, la A3 filtre presque tout.Le volant est mort dans nos mains, on se croirait dans un jeux video, y'a que la lourdeur progressive du volant pour nous informer de ce que la voiture fait.Pourtant, y'a du grip en masse.La A3 est stable en courbe, que ce soit de petites chicanes et de longues ondulations a haute vitesse.Le seul hic c'est que on sent rien du tout de ce grip.Impossible de juger ou on est rendu dans ses limites.La je vais dire quelque chose de gros, la direction me fait penser a une Cavalier, c'est pas aussi pire que ca mais on a souvent l'impression qu'on roule sur de la glace.Résultat, on doit s'appuyer dans le grip de la voiture pour la placer en courbe.C'est pas vraiment comme ca que ca doit se faire.
Bien que le grip soit impressionnant, on se rend vite compte qu'on a effectivment un V6 a l'avant.Dans les virages serrées la A3 part en sous virage vraiment impressionnant.On lache la pedale un peu et c'est moins grave mais l'arriere ne se met jamais de la partie.Aucune chance de jouer les "Initial D", le système Quattro est la pour calmer tout petit ecart survireur.Sur chaussee mouillee on aurait tendance a croire que la A3 ferait mieux que la 135i mais le sous-virage n'est que pire.Une chance qu'on a un bon systeme ABS parce que j'ose meme pas m'imaginer ce qui arriverait sur route ouverte.
Pour ce qui est de la traction.Aucun reproche, c'est impossible de faire deraper les pneus sur chaussee sec.L'accélération est quand meme soutenue, mais c'est pas du calibre de la 135i, d'autant plus que la A3 lui donne une bonne cinquantaine de chevaux.La transmission DSG est elle tres efficace.Les changements de rapport sont instantannee et sont quand meme beaucoup plus doux que sur une M3 ou une M6 avec la boite SMG.Il n'y aucune hésitation et le mode automatique est digne de ce nom, on ne sent absolument rien de ce qui se passe dans la transmission.Et c'est peut-etre la on se situe tout le probleme de la A3, on sent rien de ce qui se passe.Le moteur sonne comme un aspirateur de luxe, la suspension et la direction filtre trop les sensations de conduites.Du fait on se retrouve a 160 km/h dans le temps de le dire sans trop savoir ce qui s'est passe.
Conclusion:
La finition est exemplaire.Comme toujours chez Audi c'est ce qui impressione le plus.La planche de bord est du meilleur finit et en plus elle est tres attrayante.Tout est bien a sa place, l'ergonomie est hors-pair.C'est peut-etre seulement ici ou la 135i ne se compare pas a la Audi, puisqu'il n'y a absolument aucun reproche a faire a cette derniere.Bref, la A3 3.2 Quattro S-Line n'est pas une voiture de sport malgré ce que Audi voudrait nous faire croire.Ce n'est qu'une tres bonne voiture compacte avec un gros moteur.Pas de probleme pour depasser presque n'importe quelle voiture sur route normale, mais sur circuit ou en conduite sportive il se fait beaucoup mieux ailleurs et meme chez Audi et Volkswagen, la Audi S3 en premier lieu.Aug 12, 2008

Good solid drive, better than the BMW Series 1, more fuel efficient (I need to stop driving fast). Trip computer is a bit unreliable but works reasonably well.
Overall a nice car to drive just a bit noisy at speed (really needs a sixth gear Audi!)

The A3 DSG Turbo 2.0L is simply amazing, the transmission is extremely accurate and fast, making it very fun to drive and the fuel efficiency isn't as bad eather thanks to the "Direct Fuel Inyection" technology. The 197 hp turbo motor is very impressive, it keeps pushingo forward even in sixth gear at full speed. Also another of the great aspects of the Audi A3 is it's brakes, not that smoosth not tha hard and you always keep control of the car even in panic braking without even needing to hold the steering wheel. It's a very fun car too drive and has plenty of space compare to a Mini Cooper. The BOSE sound quality is great and it comes ipod ready so you can listen too your musci right away. The only aspect that could be critizied is the security theme, cause even though it cas plenty of technology it doesn't come with ESP (I had too ask for it as an optional package) and some other electronci systems that we can see in the Golf Mark IV, also it only has 4 airbargs instead of 6 like all the ohter cars in same segment. Sold it to a student who's gonna chip it, exhaust, intake, etc.
This car is so smooth
Paddle shifters are cool, wanted the automatic convenience and shift ability too

My 2008 Audi A3 starts but wont stay on
My 2008 Audi A3 2.0t starts but wont stay on. At 1st when the car would start it would produce a big cloud of white smoke and smelt like gas. After driving it for a few miles and parked it the car wouldn't stay on after starting. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and still nothing. Spark plus were new but now all black from what I'm guessing is that the fuel isn't getting ignited or its just to much fuel coming out. Any ideas?
