Setting a new standard for entry-level performance cars, the BMW 1-Series enters the U.S. market for 2008 with three available trims, including two sedans and a convertible. A small, rear-wheel-drive car that packs a lot of power under its hood, the 1-Series projects a sleek, muscular apparance while maintaining its distinctive BMW design. It also incorporates all the latest BMW technologies, from brakes to transmissions, suspension to safety features, and offers a sporty interior, with well-thought-out controls, carefully designed ergonomics, and all the latest gear and gadgets.
The BMW 1-Series starts with a stiff, energy-absorbing frame designed to be resistant to vibration, resulting in a stable, comfortable ride with minimal squeaks and rattles. BMW has strived to create an ideal 50/50 front-to-rear balance with the 1-Series, to ensure the "signature feel" of BMW driving. In addition, the rear-wheel-drive configuration, with the engine at the front and the driving wheels at the rear, provides optimal traction, stability, and handling, according to BMW.
Drivers have a choice of two engines. A 230-horsepower, 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, available in the 128i sedan and convertible trims, features Valvetronic valvetrain technology, which results in plenty of power with improved fuel efficiency. Stepping up a big notch, the BMW 135i sedan comes with a 300-horsepower, 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder, which achieves its extra power punch thanks to two turbochargers and direct Piezo gas injectors.
Transmissions include a six-speed manual, which comes standard on all trims, as well as an optional three-mode, six-speed Steptronic. The three shift modes include Manual, which enables drivers to shift without a clutch pedal (optional steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles are available); the Sport mode; and the Drive mode, which uses BMW's automatic adaptive transmission.
Other mechanical features include a dynamic braking control system, which adjusts the brakes depending on driving conditions, and dynamic traction control, which kicks in at a higher threshold, enabling drivers to push the limits a bit more while ensuring their safety. Antilock brakes, adaptive brake lights, a tire pressure monitoring system, and programmable daytime running lights are also included.
The interior of the 1-Series comes well equipped as well, with such standard features as eight-way adjustable front seats, gray poplar wood trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and phone controls, an engine start/stop button, a two-way power moonroof, automatic climate control, and a 10-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system with an MP3 input jack. A wide range of options, including a navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, and Sirius satellite radio, is available.
Reviewers who have test-driven a European version of the 1-Series gave it high marks, noting that the rear-wheel-drive configuration separates the 1-Series from the front-wheel-driven competition. Reviewers also noted that the backseat of the 1-Series can be cramped for adults, and that cargo space is limited, but for those in the driver's seat, the sport-oriented 1-Series excels.

BMWs have been the best looking convertible sedan for a generation. The engine is rock solid and the clutch durable. I love BMWs heated seats ... honestly, they are the best of any car I have ever driven. BMWs do not take risks in design which makes them timeless. The twin turbos on this car is a dream, the power is always there. Quick trips AND highway driving are both fun. Seating is spacious enough for a coupe and rear seats will actually work well in a pinch. Handling as you would expect is superb. Build Quality is great, dash and gadgets and gizmos all hold up and can handled being used. There is nothing "bad" about this car. MPG goes down as expected when you get on the turbos. No bugs or quirks to be really cautious for. All and all, no real cons for this vehicle.Dec 16, 2013

Completely lives up to BMW's reputation. Would buy this model again. Great handling and power. Best coupe in its class! Strong acceleration and braking. My wife has always wanted this car and it met/exceeded her expectations. Next time I will consider the 135 to see what the turbo charged engine does to this model.Sep 30, 2012

Quick off the lights! Scared the beejeebies out of me first time i put my foot down!
Handles beautifully until it rains. Average 28 mph so a little more expensive, but so
fun to drive!The M Sport is more aggressive in appearance and the saphire metalic
black paintwork is a dream with the chrome touches. 19inch alloys finish the look
for me. The interior is class and is so comfortable. The back seats are small but i

The BMW 135i is simply an amazing car. Out of two tiny turbos and a 3.0
liter inline 6 cylinder engine it gets 300hp and 300lbft torque. It is
extremely fun to drive, and will get you anywhere extremely fast. The only
downside is that maintenance is expensive and cargo space is limited.

Its a 125i m sport convertible in black with red leather with the 3.0 engine fitted as standard.plenty power,it goes sideways and i just love it. if i take my time i can still get over 40mpg,not bad for a 3.0! but plant the throttle and it can go down as far as 7mpg lol,i don't care about fuel consumption i just love the noise of that straight six.Sep 08, 2009

My only two complaints are the electronic speed control (155 mph with the performance package; could easily do 175 without the governor) and the wind noise around the windows that resulted in driving over 120 mph (something about the extra pressure messing up the seal). This is the most amazing drive I've ever had. I fall in love with it all over again every day I drive it. Sadly, my wife talked me into trading it in on a 3-series that the whole family can enjoy more. Bittersweet.Jun 14, 2009

Amazing acceleration, great handling, good manual shifter,
much better looking than in pictures. Fun to drive, excellent
interior and options. The brakes are fantastic, and the car is
extremely responsive, even with all the nannies off it is
remarkably composed. It is easy to drive in commuter traffic as
well.
Trunk space is good. A great, classy wolf in sheep clothing.
Definitely more fun than my 2002 300xi. Buy it and you won't

BMW's 135i is nothing short of amazing. The build quality is stellar and that coupled with standard BMW power and handling make for an amazing machine. BMW's warranty and free service are great programs that add confidence to ownership. The 135i's twin turbo engine is incredible...more than enough power is always on tap.
I would definitely recommend the 135i to anyone who loves to REALLY drive. The enthusiast who takes the long way home from work on a sunny Friday afternoon just to enjoy the open road.Dec 25, 2008

A light, tight BMW that does 0-60 in 4.7 sec need I say more? It's not an M car but it can be if you want it to. Just get a performance exhaust, stiffer springs, sway bars, and a DINAN stage 2 and you've got yourself a 400hp M killer. Coolest compact car Great (basically carefree) engine and 6 speed gearbox. Impressive that the 2 litre engine is enviromentaly friendly (119gc02/km) and still puts out 143hp and alot of torque.
Mind you that 143hp isn't that much of a wowfactor BUT it's a small 3door compact car with the same hp as most normal midsized cars so 0-100kph in 8.9s isn't that bad. And you get free parking! It certainly is the best performing car of all envirementally friendly dieselcars today. However 0-100kph in 8.9 seconds isn't enough to give it a full score on performance.
Breaking is excellent and handling with the stiffened suspension that the M-sport package gives me is superb even with 5 people in the car.
Can't really complain much about the buildquality. Neat and tidy, very... "german". My only complain is a small panel hosting the buttons for the electric windows. It looks like it comes right out of a Daewoo or other cheap car.
I'm normally not really fond of the compact car look but BMW managed to make me buy theirs partly because of the looks. Looks great and stylish although I have my reservation about the backpart. The back looks good - for a compact car - however this cars beauty truly takes form when it's seen in the coupé version. Hence 4/5 on appearance.May 14, 2008

Test drove both the 128i and the 135i. The 128 is a pleasant little semi-sports car. That's about the best I can say for it. The 135i, however is the main show. Just hit the accelerator and you hear this very satisfying growl just as you're shoved back in the seat by the resident 300 hp monster. This is a very fun toy to drive around, in fact, I was basically chortling the whole time I was driving it. It's a funny blend of serious performance, luxury and practicality. If this unique (odd?) mix of size, comfort, performance and price is in line with what you want, well there probably aren't too many other options, but who cares because you probably won't stop smiling after you drive one.Apr 30, 2008

This is a 2 door coupe with 3 liter inline 6 cylinder churning out 300 HP, and with it's light body weight the power to weight ration is incredibly balanced and makes this car feel like an M3. The steptronic paddle shift transmission is one of the best BMW had made and there is no turbo lag and the power is instantly transmitted to the wheels when changing gears.
