GTI new headlights won't work
Bought brand new headlights (and all accessories) per a mechanic saying that is what needs replaced (and that it wasn't an electrical problem) and they won't work after installation. Ideas?

The latest in a long line of German-engineered GTIs dating back more than three decades, to the days of the early Rabbit versions, the 2007 Volkswagen GTI is as fast as it looks -- and it looks mighty fast, with its racing-oriented front end design, red-striped grille, angled headlights, dashing roof line, horseshoe-patterned alloy wheels, and tricked-out interior. Power comes in the form of a turbocharged, direct-fuel-injected, intercooled, 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine that produces a respectable 200 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission, with a great-looking sports shifter, is standard, while a six-speed automatic Tiptronic transmission, with a special gate for manual shifting, is optional. For 2007, the GTI is available in both two-door (coupe) and four-door (sedan) versions, with a lengthy list of standard features including air conditioning, power windows, remote power door locks, power exterior mirrors, dual front and side airbags, a sport steering wheel, six-way adjustable sports seats, a rear lip spoiler, and a 10-speaker AM/FM satellite-ready stereo system with an in-dash CD changer and steering-wheel-mounted radio controls. Other interior features include a three-spoke racing-inspired leather-wrapped steering wheel, alloy pedals, blue-glow instrument gauges, and extra grab handles (for use in those tight corners). Anti-lock brakes, traction control, and stability control are also part of the package. So how good is the 2007 Volkwagen GTI? Automobile Magazine designated the GTI its Automobile of the Year, and drivers praised its handling, performance, comfort, and safety features.

I loved my MkV GTI. It was my first car and I bought it because I'm a fan of the styling, I like hatchbacks, and it's a very fun but refined car to drive. For someone without kids it has all the storage space you'll need (except if you need to move a mattress or something big like that). The short wheelbase and turbo 4 cylinder engine are a good combination, making the GTI very fun to drive and incredibly responsive to driver inputs. It also gets decent real world fuel economy, with my chipped car getting 28mpg city and 35 highway. It's reasonably easy to work on as well if you like to do your own maintenance, but you will need triple-square sockets if you want to do anything other than changing the oil or replacing the intake.
Overall the interior is very nice and spacious with a good build quality. I had previously driven my parents' Honda Odyssey and Toyota Matrix, and the interior quality of the GTI far surpasses anything I could have expected. German cars are known for their fit and finish and the GTI doesn't disappoint. Visibility is also very good, with the c-pillars being the only real blind-spots. Keep in mind my car is the coupe version, so there will be different blind-spots with the four-door version.
Styling of the car is good as well, with a semi-timeless look. The car is 8 years old at the time of this writing, but it still looks modern and classy. I can't say the same about the rest of the VW lineup from this year though, if that gives some perspective of my preferences. For instance, I would never own a MkV Jetta because I think the rear styling of the car is horrendous.
I don't have any huge complaints about the car, with my only issues being the high pressure fuel pump cam follower and changing the oil. The HPFP follower is a metal cup essentially that follows a three lobe cam connected to the engine's cam shaft. It is part of the pump that pressurizes the fuel rails for direct injection. The follower's design is flawed, in that if it isn't routinely checked and replaced when wear is noticed it can blow up and destroy the camshaft in the process. This is obviously not good and costs about $2000 for parts and labor at a dealer. It is an easy thing to check, however, as I did at each oil change and never had any issues. This brings me to the next point of the manual stating oil changes only need to happen every 10k miles. This will decrease the life of the engine. Because it's direct injected it will burn some oil by nature of it's design, and the turbo itself uses engine oil to lubricate its bearings. By the time 10k miles roll around the oil will be in inadequate shape to properly lubricate the turbo, and the engine will be running very low on oil because of the natural direct injection burning process. That is why you need to change oil every 3k miles with full synthetic. This isn't cheap (about $50 if you do it yourself) but well worth it in the long run.
Overall, if you're looking for a fun, quick, small, but practical car and don't have kids, then this car fits the bill. It gets good gas mileage, is well styled and designed inside and out, and will make you not want to leave the driver seat. Unless of course you test drive a MkIV R32, fall in love, and sell your MkV GTI and buy one of those.Mar 19, 2015

THis car was by far my favorite car that i have ever owned. It's hatch provides ample space for all your daily needs. THe fuel efficiency is very good as well. More importantly, it's the most fun when driving around a twisty back road. The handling is excellent and the power feels strong for a little hatchback. Aug 26, 2013

Build Quality: I had the dv and pcv upgrade but everything else is good.
Car Comparisons: I was looking at early 2000 vettes,2004 gto,mazda rx8,and subaru wrx.The reason I got the gti is it had the most creature comforts,great mpg and still fun to drive.The down side is mods are NOT cheap when you do find them.

Everything is perfect about this car.The DSG transmission is a MUST have.It's fun to drive,It's fast and you can gain a lot of HP with a cheap chip due to the 2.0 Turbo engine!

Love the car. The quality is okay, but I bought the extended warranty so I don't have to worry about the cost of the repairs. The car is very fun to drive, and I would not want anything faster, my GTI is red and I have gotten a bunch of tickets already. Feels heavy but well controlled in the twisties, but that heaviness is real nice on the highway. I would not recommend real aggressive summer tires as it can make the car noisy (Eagle f1's) but I do recommend Blizzaks for the winter as the car has a lot of torque when the weather goes south. The non-touch screen nav of my model is near useless, but otherwise I love pretty much everything about it, it looks great, drives great, and goes like stink. Dec 16, 2009

fun and exciting, excellent gear(manual transmission), just stick to the road and precise handling. Very good mileage (about 25~30mpg), good looking, the body kit is definitely worth getting. The DSG transmission is amazing and the car has
great handling capabilities. The brakes are great for
normal driving but the car has a little to much weight
for the brakes to make it a track dawg. The turbo
motor is a little thirsty but if you hyper mile it you can easily get 35-40 mpg.May 09, 2009

This car is VW's typical hot hatch. Echoing previous generations, the car is quick, fun, and stylish. Acceleration is great on the car and 2.0FSI Turbocharged engine really puts out some nice numbers out of the factory. The handling on the car is great as well but the brakes seem to be a little bit of a weak point. Not to say they don't brake well, they just don't feel like they have any bite to it to compare to the meatiness of the rest of the performance aspect. Interior build is also solid and the vehicle allows for many upgrades including heated leather seats, sunroof, and navigation system. The dash interior colors are very visible and modern looking and the in-car computer help keep track of all you need to know about your car. This car's looks are all around sleek and smooth. The body lines of the car flow very well and the honeycomb grill in the front with the red striping are very appealing to the eye. In terms of gas mileage, you won't find a much better performing 4 cyl. turbo car. Personally, I average ~30m/gal highway and ~22m/gal city. Maintenance is a little pricey because the turbo engine require a minimum 91 octane fuel and also fully synthetic oil But, all in all, this car is a whole lot of fun to drive and honestly, after two years of owning it, I don't regret my decision at all. The accelaration is awesome, that sound of the turbo is cool, the gear box is smooth and short, and the design of the seats is very racing! front bumper has a relly aggressive look. MPG highway is good.

It's a great value for the sportiness to cost ratio. I love the handling and performance. The DSG is sometimes a little slow to kick in and you can't skip gears, so I would recommend getting the standard transmission instead. It gets really good mileage, too, if you drive gently.Sep 21, 2008

Good, well-weighted steering. Responsive handling with a very tossable feel. Low on power, and FWD is annoying. Loses traction in 1st gear on hard acceleration. DSG is neat, but loses its fun factor after a while. Give me a proper manual next time. Interior is very nice and build quality is excellent for the price. Incredibly practical. Sep 19, 2008

The Golf GTi is simply spectacular to drive & own. It's 200bhp engine is very responsive in any gear with powerful but smooth acceleration. VW build quality shines through with flawless bodywork, interior & great supportive seats. Service interval is around 20k miles, dashboard activated. There's loads of included extras like a/c, 18" alloys, sensor lights & wipers. It looks stunning with the extra GTi badges, especially in bright red and turns heads!

This car is a joy to drive for any real driving enthusiast. Its a hot hatch at its soul, and
delivers in almost all facets. Handling and suspension is hard making it feel like you are
apart of the road. With its brand new 2.0t, this car does not lack in pick-up. There is very
minmal turbo lag making this car seem much faster than it really is. I highly recomend this
car if you are looking for a fun car to drive that gives you a feeling that your in a 30k
sports car.

The GTI delivers smooth, predictable power throughout the entire RPM range using a 6-speed manual gearbox. Turbo lag is non-existent, and torque steer is more than mitigated with an electronic steering rack that compensates. The interior is appropriate for the likes of a much more expensive vehicle--you won't be disappointed. This little front-drive "economy" car shows its prowess in the sports arena, but also pays special attention to taking care of the driver during a long trip (well insulated interior, supportive adjustable seats) during a long commute (car is a pleasure to drive) or for a quick bang through the gears on a twisty road (enter all of the GTI's best German-engineered dynamics). Incredible!. this car fitted with the DSG is just total acceleration. In sports mode it powers through each of it 6 gears just like a formula 1 car. It's only a 2.0L four cylinder, but the turbo makes up the rest of what's missing. 147kW @ 5100rpm & 280Nm of torque between 1800 - 5000rpm. It effortlessly goes from 0 -100 in 6.9 seconds. Severe Hesistation in hot weather
2007 GTI almost stalls out after driving for 2 hours in hot weather, loses fuel pressure, and continues a 10 secs cycle of severe loss of power. Have replaced Fuel pump, fuel sensors, tune-up, cam and crank sensors, and thinking about replacing the ECM? Any help??
