New to the U.S. market for 2006, the Audi A3 is a compact four-door hatchback sharing much of its family DNA with the Volkswagen Golf. But as an Audi, it offers more technology, luxury, and refinement befitting a price that often crests $30,000.

Consider the A3 a shortened A4 Avant. All the handsome proportions of that station wagon translate to this smaller Audi. The tall grille is the one allowable flourish within a conservative theme of flat, rectilinear shapes and minimal creases along a smooth body. The A3 is still kind of plain, but a new S Line package for 2007 adds larger wheels and a few other styling tweaks. It'll never stand out, yet we'll bet it'll never look out of fashion, either. That's Audi.
The interior is several grades above the Golf. The seats are nicely contoured, soft-touch rubbers grace the dash and doors, and the instrumentation looks high-grade, just as the switches give off a fine tactility. Ornamentation is limited to a few aluminum trim pieces on the shifter, doors, and center console. It's serious business inside an A3. And it's seriously well-made.

The A3 comes with two engines, two transmissions, and two drivetrains. The 2.0T has a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with front-wheel drive and either a six-speed manual or six-speed DSG automatic. The Direct Shift Gearbox (Audi's name for a dual-clutch transmission) is not a typical automatic. It feels more like a manual, in that it lets the clutches slip at crawling speeds. Since you can't control these clutches, the DSG can feel jerky around town where the excellent manual transmission always feels precise and smooth. The DSG's advantage is faster shifts at higher speeds and quicker shifts than traditional automatics. We'd recommend the manual, which is more affordable and more reliable long-term.
The A3 feels nimble and balanced, and while the electric power steering can be too light at times, it's precise enough. The suspension delivers a great balance of ride quality and control, thanks to an independent setup front and rear. Acceleration is strong; there's 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. It's so good you should skip the 3.2 quattro, which is the only model available with all-wheel drive. That uses a 3.2-liter V6 with 250 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. Because it's hundreds of pounds heavier than the front-wheel drive 2.0T, the 3.2 doesn't feel much quicker.

There's enough room for four adults considering this is a small car. Taller passengers may have to crouch in the back due to the mild slope in the roof, but it's not a deal-breaker. An optional double sunroof called Open Sky lets more light in for those rear passengers. There are 13 cubic feet of storage in the cargo hold and 55 cubic feet with the rear seats down. The seating position is low and the driver has easy access to all controls. Everything is legible and simple to operate, although the optional navigation system requires more of your attention while driving. A monochrome display in the instrument cluster shows more info, like trip, temperature, and optional Bluetooth controls, but the information gets a bit crowded.

As befitting a European car, the A3 is basic to start. Keyless entry, 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate, manual cloth seats, and a bad stereo are all you'll get on the base car. The A3 doesn't feel like an Audi until you add the Audio package, with Sirius radio and a 10-speaker Bose stereo which counteracts road noise. The Technology package adds automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, Bluetooth phone connectivity with voice recognition, adaptive xenon headlights, and auto-dimming rearview and side-view mirrors. Then there's the Premium package, which covers the seats and steering wheel with leather, adds power adjustments for the driver's seat, throws in some illuminated vanity mirrors on the sun visors, installs fog lights, and decorates the interior with aluminum. Heated front seats, mirrors, and washer nozzles are part of the Cold Weather package. The S Line package includes a sport suspension, unique trim, and bundles some options from the other packages. The 3.2 is mostly loaded, save for the Cold Weather package, Bluetooth, and the xenon lights. If the A3 sounds costly with all these packages, that's because it is. But this is quite a lot of equipment in a small car.

The A3 comes standard with frontal airbags, front side airbags, and front and rear head curtain airbags. Anti-lock brakes, traction control, and stability control come standard, as do seat belt pre-tensioners front and rear. Rear side airbags are optional. Crash-test results earn the best Good rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the moderate overlap front, side, and roof-strength tests. The A3 has not been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The 2007 A3 starts at $26,060 for the 2.0T and $34,700 for the 3.2 quattro. The 3.2's MSRP is too pricey for what amounts to a trivial gain in power and a reduction in fuel economy. EPA ratings are 18 mpg city, 25 highway, and 21 combined for the 3.2, which is very poor. The 2.0T offers 21/29/24 with the manual and 22/29/25 with the DSG automatic. Given how well the A3 drives, its safety, premium feel, and available tech, we'd recommend buying one.

Unbelievable reliability. Have kept this car since new, coming up on 17 years of ownership. Superior agility and torque. Dont need gobs of horsepower to get spirited driving. And from the front, it still looks pretty modern. A little cramped for 6 tall drivers, but seats are good. Its a mini wagon with a surprising amount of room. Feb 11, 2024

Very cool car. Intuitive feel in terms of handling and general mechanical feel. Delayed acceleration makes for strange starts, and can be dangerous if not careful. Great speed, superior interior quality without the useless, flashy gadgets of some luxury brands, and unmatched style for its year and class. Value is totally worth it, so long as you have 5 to 7k extra for repairs. Common issues were apparent, such as engine mounts and engine vibration, to include transmission leaks and rust. Rear suspension felt overly stiff and strange. Owners need to keep up with the maintenance and this is a keeper.Nov 14, 2023

Good hatchback option but felt too cramped and tight inside. I’m not overly big (6’) but it was really tight for me. I had to put the seat all the way down and recline it to have good eyesight out the front. My head was right up against the roof when sitting in the back.
That said, it rides nice and has an upscale feeling. The double sunroof/moonroof feature is a nice touch too. For shorter folks I’d say this is a great option

I liked everything about this car besides the amount of space I had, I just need more for hunting and work. Other then that this car is wonderful. It would be a great car for any student that needs to commute to and from college or even high school. It is inexpensive but you still get everything that Audi has to offer.Jan 13, 2015

after a couple small mods it the car becomes amazing, performance is great could
be a bit faster, cheap to own once every 35k u have to fork out 250 for trans

Had a 2002 225 hp TT roadster that I loved, but didn't have the utility I need. The A3 witht he 3.2 is the same drivetrain as the new TT with a backseat and a hatch. I LOVE THIS CAR!!! I think it will be a ten-year keeper.Mar 30, 2010

solid, handling is not bad. i didn't need any repairs and i'm
pretty satisfied with this car. it is kinda expensive to maintain
but it it fun to drive it.

Great fun to drive in good and bad weather!
Quattro All Wheel Drive system makes it feel like it is on rails.

Performance - Goes faster than you expect.
Build Quality - Great (it's an Audi).
Appearance - Looks kinda sedate but gives a few subtle clues.
Cost of Ownership - Not the cheapest car to speed (can't quite call it zipping) around in but it sounds great doing so.

This is a well built, very nice looking, sporty car. The paddle shifters are nice. The Milano Red paint is beautiful. This car was quick to start with, but mine has the Oettinger performance pack which shifts up from an already impressive 200bhp to a screaming 255 - that's 10 more than the 3.2... 0-60 is sub-6 seconds now and it's acceleration and torque is shattering and fuel consumption isn't affected. Audi WHY dont you do this as standard? - Thankfully the haldex-quattro is good enough to give blistering starts even in the wet and it really hangs on around the corners. Mine came as an ex-demo, loaded with toys (such as heated two-tone black & silver leather seats) and the quality (esp of the interior) is superb. Love the RS4-style 18" alloys which really sets the car apart too. So much fun, so little time...Jul 29, 2008

I'm happy with this car, the 2.0T engine is great, economic when driven responsibly and powerful when pushed. Cornering is excellent (sport package).

Loved the car, hated Audi.
Found the Audi dealerships to be absolutely useless and incredibly unhelpful, hence the reason wjy I sold the car.
Amazing performance from the 250BHP engine, which was mated to the F1 Style Paddle Shift DSG gearbox. Thought the looks were a bit understated for a car with this type of performance which some people like but I would've preferred it to look a little meaner.Jan 23, 2008

Though there are increasing numbers on the road, the A3 still feels like an undiscovered secret. Great handling and acceleration, and the TT interior with black leather has a classy look. Cargo capacity is suprisingly good with the rear seats folded down - plenty of room for a weekend's worth of gear.Nov 12, 2007

I was driving normal, as I was approaching the robot the car started to loose power. when I took off I can feel the car doesn't have power , when I want to pull off the car just switch itself off . I try to start again but it could start is then it show esp fault . After then , the gear couldn't move from p to the other gears . Can you please help

What's the difference between S-line and Premium packages
Looking at a 2007 Audi A3 and it has the premium S-tronic package. Looks like it has the DSG transmission (saw the shift paddles on the steering wheel). Is this much different than the S-Line package or does it even exist on a 2007? If so, what's the difference?
