Even though the MINI Cooper hardtop received a complete redesign for 2007, and grew slightly in size (for safety reasons), it was still the shortest car in the U.S., but also one of the widest. The manufacturer calls this a bulldog stance -- short and wide, with the wheels pushed all the way out to the corners. And it's this short, wide stance that gave the MINI its nimble, go-cart-like handling and impressive stability over the road.
Although the new design of the 2007 MINI hardtop resembled the models of the previous years, every exterior panel was updated and reshaped, according to the manufacturer. The 2007 MINI was a little more than two inches longer than previous models, with a new grille, hood, headlights, and taillights, as well higher shoulders and a reshaped roof designed to improve aerodynamics.
Power was increased as well, if only slightly. The standard MINI Cooper hatchback was equipped with a 1.6-liter, 16-valve, fuel-efficient aluminum engine that produced 118 horsepower, up from 115 hp for the previous year. The MINI Cooper S pumped up the power a bit, thanks to a turbocharged version of the 1.6-liter engine that produced 172 horsepower, up from 168 hp for the previous year.
The standard transmission for both versions of the MINI hatchback was a six-speed manual Getrag transmission. A six-speed automatic was optional. Paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel were optional with the automatic transmission.
Inside, design updates included a centrally located speedometer, which also displayed the fuel and temperature gauges, as well as the odometer and warning lights. It was a throwback to the MINI's racing heritage.
Other features included an interior ambient lighting system, six airbags with side protection, automatic stability control, a two-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, a start/stop button, power windows, air conditioning, and a six-speaker AM/FM stereo system with a CD player.
The 2007 MINI Cooper was also available in a convertible version, in both standard and S trim packages, though the convertibles retained the engine, transmissions, and exterior styling of the previous year's models.
Drivers highly approved of the MINI's redesign, citing its pumped-up power, improved gas mileage, more refined interior, and new features as among its positive points. Drivers also noted that the MINI held its value well at resale time. On the downside, some drivers thought the suspension could be too stiff, making for a rough ride at times, and the back seat was cramped. But overall, drivers loved the new MINI's style, sportiness, and fun factor.

May 15, 2010great handling and power to weight ratio, pulls away vey quickly and has alot of interior space for the size. good fuel economy and reliability, very fun on open roads and gets a good boost in acceleration around 3000 rpm
July 29, 2009This care handles like a go cart, has quick acceleration and currently gets 35.5 miles to the gallon average. One of the best features is the Sport Button option, which takes the care from everyday to fun in half a second. I would recommend this car to any of my friends.
August 8, 2008My car is quick, has solid handling, has a much bigger interior than expected, is cute and stylish, has lots of mileage on gas, too fun to drive slow, and very low cost of ownership. I love my little Mini!
May 7, 2009Overall, I love the car. No problems, it's a blast to drive. The back seat is small, although the kids fit fine for trips around town. Lots of room in the front seats. The turbo motor in the S has plenty of power. I got the auto transmission because I drive in a lot of traffic. But, I spend most of my time in manual/sport mode which is where all the fun driving performance is... Fit and finish is high quality and solid. The stereo speakers are a bit lame. I'll be upgrading them in the coming months... I'd buy another one in a second!
April 5, 2008Mini Cooper base model is a nice car, Lots of room for a tall guy (6'3") to sit. The seats are very comfortable. Very nice sound system. I use the line-in all the time. This car also has lots of pep, good pickup!
November 15, 2014Car is an absolute blast to drive. Mileage is great for being turbocharged and handling is great too. Maintenance can be a little pricey, especially if you drive the car hard. Needs premium gas so that can cancel out the savings from the MPG.
February 17, 2012Excellent fun to drive the MINI. Torquey turbo charged engine, means you don't have to thrash it to have fun. Great handling and predictable when pushing hard. Loves twisty B roads. If you are bothered about MPG / Performance compromise, and don't like the idea of a diesel car, this is perfect.
