2006 Mitsubishi Montero Preview summaryImage

The 2006-model year ends the Montero's run in the U.S. Mitsubishi will continue to sell it overseas, but in a more stripped down, utilitarian SUV form. In its last U.S. model, it remains the same as a seven-passenger, luxury SUV. Its 3.8-liter, 215-hp V6 mates to a five-speed Sportronic automatic that has a manual shifting mode and an adaptive shift pattern capability.

The sophisticated ActiveTrac four-wheel drive system allows on the fly activation with a full-time 4WD mode. The Montero continues to be a serious off-road vehicle reflecting its Paris-Dakar Rally championship background. It can take on washboard paths, fast fire roads, and technical rock-strewn riverbeds. Yet, the double-wishbone front and multilink rear suspension allow for capable and smooth on-road performance, though the engine has to deal with the Montero's 4,718-pound curb weight.

The cabin remains comfortable for adults in the first two seating rows, while the third row is only for kids. Fold those third row seats flat into the floor and a large cargo space materializes. Gas mileage will slow you down at the pumps with premium fuel being guzzled at an average mileage of 14.4 mpg.

The Montero has turned in a perfect five-star rating in front and rear side-impact testing. Combined with its anti-skid, traction control, and superlative 4WD system it is a stable, secure ride no matter what's going on outside of the cabin or where the driver decides to point it.

The Mitsubishi Montero Limited is a solid, luxurious vehicle. The Limited has all the bells and whistles. It is roomy - seats seven, plenty of leg and head room. It has a third row seat that collapses into the vehicle's deck - pretty cool because this provides additional storing space when needed. The retractable sunroof is huge and has the feel of a convertible when it's fully open. The off road capabilities are award winning - dominating the prestigious Dakar off road race 15 times. I love this Montero because though it's a 2006, it looks brand new. The reason being is because the Montero is rather obscure, so when people see it, they typically cannot compare it to anything else because it was discontinued in 2006. Aesthetically, it reminds me of a Range Rover. The vehicle continues to be manufactured overseas and is very popular. In other countries, the current model is called the Mitsubishi Pajero. I cannot overstate how much the 2003-2006 Montero Limited passes for a new vehicle. A few drawbacks are the gas mileage; the combined city/highway is 15mpg. The vehicle has many safety features; however, it does not have rear side-impact airbags, so the passengers in the rear are not fully protected. Also, the Montero's Achilles heel is that over time, the oil hoses and valve cover may eventually leak. In the end, this is an excellent vehicle, and I recommend it. If you're looking to purchase one, you'll likely need to expand your search radius because the Montero is truly limited, and it sells very quickly. While shopping for one, within a two-day period, five Monteros we were looking at sold. We drove from Louisville, KY to Indianapolis, IN and snatched up a phenomenal vehicle. An added bonus is that many 2015 SUVs mimic the Range Rover, which is another reason a used clean Montero Limited easily passes for brand new.Mar 29, 2015

Great car probably my best. the gas mileage sucked on it, and the exterior could have been better looking. it was a great 7 seater SUV.The car was great in the winter because all you had to do was slip it into 4 wheel drive.May 11, 2010

- it has a good acceleration due to the very good shaping and the V6 engine. - very good style , interio, and exterior - it just cost me when i need to fix or make some maintainance - i think it's from the fun class cars for anyone to driveSep 10, 2009
