Drivers of the 2006 Ford Freestyle tend to like it, but have a few reservations about recommending it wholesale. Among complaints were that the base 3.0-liter V6 engine gets on the lower side of the fuel efficiency estimate, though they tout the excellent handling in rough weather and roomy interior.
The Freestyle is available as a front- or all-wheel drive, and has SE, SEL, and Limited as trims.
The Freestyles adaptability ensures it can handle itself on the road with grace, all with surprising fuel economy. Dont get fooled by the stylish mid-size look. Once inside the Freestyle looks and feels like a full-sized luxury dream ride. The many included safety features provide you and your passengers with a secure ride and peace of mind. Also note as a Freestyle owner I got news that Ford knows about uneven wear on the brake pads and will be issuing new pads in the 4th quarter. I am still waiting for mine to come in. Other than that the vehicle handles better than most SUV / VAN's that I have driven as the limited has an 18" wheel base and has a low center of gravity which helps it stay on the road in various conditions. All in all this is a very nice vehicle and great for the long trips.

Myself I am a GM man until I bought this used freestyle with 161,000 miles.I’ve read all the complaints about the transmission and from what I discovered is that it’s extremely reliable despite what some may say.Because it’s a cvt transmission made in Germany it requires regular maintenance at 60,000 miles this includes using ONLY the correct transmission fluid.My freestyle was properly maintained and has over 225,000 miles and has no major issues other than the scroll valve in the a/c compressor which doesn’t last very long maybe 3 years at best.The only reason they stopped making the using the cvt transmission was not quality issues but cost issues.If they still made them I would buy another one .Like anything people need to learn how to properly maintain their vehicles and if done consistently you will reap the rewards of longevity it’s pay me a little bit now or a lot of you wait until later.Dec 27, 2021

Great vehicle, bought it when I started a family and I couldn't have asked for a more reliable car. Maintained it in great condition and kept the interior and exterior clean. The navigation system is a life savor. Great carDec 19, 2013

Even though the gas milage wasn't great, I loved this car until the AWD went out under 3 years and then the transmission in it's third year. Ford no longer makes this car and now I know why, I wish I had done more research before I bought this car. I learned that transmission is guaranteed to go out in a few short years. this SUV is a mid size and the 7 pasanber seating comes in handy. The fold flat seats(including the front passanger) helps with large loads or hauling lumber for thoes projects that you want to build, but never have time for. The only thing I don't like is that it sits a little lower than most SUV's, so you have to be careful when you go off road.May 10, 2010

Reliability has been very good, as has gas mileage for its size. 24 mpg highway requires no particular care. Only problems in 85K miles have been rear brakes and need to reflash for airbag light.
Styling very plain. Carpets wearing very poorly. Acceleration good for our normal 3 passengers, even in hilly areas, but slow with 5 or more passengers.

Update: Reliability holding up well at over 125K miles. Front struts replaced, needs new rear struts. Hope this will improve wallowy ride. Has had some other suspension noises, with a couple of suspension bushings replaced. Ability to get CVT transmission fixed/replaced if it fails a concern, but no problems so far.

Update: Still driving at 163K miles, reasonably reliable except for air conditioning, gas mileage as good as new. Understand that transmission would be far too expensive to fix/replace if it fails.Dec 22, 2009

Never thought I would OWN a Ford - but now I think I might want another one!!! I LOVE this Vehicle!!! It sits up higher than a car, drives like a car, and has enough room for a small army OR bunk beds! i love this car. it fits my family just perfect because i am not the mini van mom. i can tote my 4 kids around with no problem. i do wish that it was a little bigger so that our 2 black lab puppies would fit better. overall i would definately recomend this car to anyone and everyone.Jul 02, 2008

Thought I'd hate this car when we first got it. It's comfortable and very easy to drive. Hauls
my entire family (2 adults, 1 child and a 90 lb dog) with great ease. Cup holders

Looking for answers about alternators
I have a 2006 Ford Freestyle and have changed the alternator 5 times now in the past 2 months, I replaced the tensioner pulley and belt also. So last week we ended up putting a Motorcraft alternator in and it ran good for 2 days and now my battery light and charging system light is on again. I'm wanting to know if I have ac in the back seat do I need a alternator that says rear ac or just the regular one. The Ford people said It could be my battery cable going to the alternator. Help Please!

Check engine light
Hi my 2006 has 150,000 miles. Recently the check engine light has came on and I put the old reader the code came up saying it was MAF sensor. So it was replaced and now another code pops up saying it's the egr valve. . I don't know what to do without the funds to get it professionally fixed the right way. I'm a single mom that lives check to check. Any input would be greatly appreciated...
