Golf 4 - car doesn't move in any gear
My car starts perfectly- had a decent service Came back and now when I put into drive or reverse the car doesn't move? What could be the problem

Volkswagen made no changes to its venerable Golf hatchback for 2005, in anticipation of a completely redesigned vehicle due the following year. Two basic trim packages were still available. The Golf GL came in either a two-door or a four-door version. The two-door Golf was available with only a 115-hp, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gas engine, while the four-door version was available with either the 4-cylinder gas engine or a 100-hp, 1.9-liter diesel engine with the TDI (turbo direct injection) feature.
The four-door, higher-end Golf GLS was available with the same two engines. A five-speed manual transmission was standard equipment across the line. A five-speed manual transmission was standard across the line. A four-speed automatic transmission was optional with the gas-engine Golfs, while a five-speed automatic was optional with the TDI diesels.
Standard features for the GL package included air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, front and side airbags for the driver and passenger, anti-lock brakes, a tilt/telescoping steering column, an anti-theft alarm system, a keyless entry system, cruise control, and a stereo system with a CD player. The GLS added a power sunroof, among other features. Stability control is optional across the line.
Drivers gave positive marks to the Golf's build quality, acceleration, handling, safety features, and smooth-shifting manual transmission. Gas mileage, though, was noted by some drivers as not being as good as expected.

If you are looking for a well built Germany auto and it needs to do alittle bit of everything you cannot go wrong with the VW golf. I got the car with 90K 4 years ago and now have 156K and other than keeping up with the standard maintance it owes me nothing.Feb 26, 2015

Simply Brilliant,Fast,torquey and still acheives 55mpg,very sure footed handling which is almost impossible to upset no matter how hard you drive it,Has to be one of the best cars on the market for performance, build quality,reliability,and retaining its retail value.2.0 Tdi 6 speed worth the extra money over the 1.9 Tdi.Dec 15, 2011

It is an excellent car for the first 5 yrs in terms of stability, braking,
performance, handling, appearance, exterior styling.
But all of the above will loose its value after the 5 yrs.
Also the car is not durable and the interior building quality is poor.

The TDIs are probably one of the best cars in the hatchback segment. Built in Brazil, it aims to command 145 hp and 292 ft/lbs of Torque. Quality is in VW up till 2011!VW seems to have lost it with the 2011 Jetta entry level in terms of interior quality; what is going on???Dec 03, 2010

Don't know very much about, deffinatly a mothers car 5 seats, and a reasonable sized boot, not very much to say about performance. However has had a few repairs in its 2 years in my mothers car. easily scratched/ dented. Electrical mechanisms are not very reliable, had to do some rpairs and replacements. Very good cost of ownership (sorry don't know exact prices), never personally driven it, so i cant comment wether or not it is a fun car to drive.Oct 26, 2010

Fun to drive. Has some get up and go. It's a great commuter car. It gets really excellent fuel economy, but it does have some reliability issues. We've had 2 sunroof water leaks and the hatch back lock selenoid is not working properly. It is a fun little car though.

pure nice this is the bomb, in performance and style. the acceleration is quite good as well,the inside is big and comfortable enough to drive. the only downside was that its a bit fragile in place which might put ppl off but overall is a geniune buy for secondhand and a future classic!!!!!Nov 05, 2009

Average acceleration but smooth and quiet when up to speed. Very fluid steering with excellent composure and roadholding. Superb build quality with functional hard wearing interior. Excellent fuel economy and maintenenace costs OK but VW dealers know how to charge! Good fun to drive and easy to live with.May 15, 2009

Test drove the car; when the turbo kicked in in second-gear and we felt the car propel, we were pretty much sold. Love the fuel efficiency of the diesel; dunno whether we'll ever go back to petrol again. I was initially a tad intimidated by the sound of a diesel engine, but I've learned to love the low manly hum it makes ;)
Iro Build Quality, I've said it before and I'll say it again - Golf V does not quite compare to the build quality of the Mark 4 - there was a solidity and feeling of being safely encapsulated that I experienced with the Golf IV that I haven't quite felt with the Mark 5 (the 5 is faster and sportier though - you feel the speed and the road when you pedal to the metal). Appearance - no doubt bout it, the 5 is a beaut. We have her in black with a sunroof and customized plates (interior, she has black heated leather seats, dual-zone climate control and a 6CD shuttle in the armrest console) so she offers everything we could ever dream of! Maintenance - took her with the extended warranty option, so it really won't be a trainsmash for some time to come. Fun Factor - oh, she's a hell of a lot of fun for someone who LOVES driving - I've set her auto audio volume increase thingie to medium so the music gets louder as you increase speed - makes fast driving one hell of a rush ;) Last but not least; MOMMY FACTOR: Love the Isofix childseat locks, huge boot for the pram and other kiddie paraphernalia and she has a 5 star NCAP rating which made her a safe choice as our family car - therefore a good allrounder.Apr 30, 2009

This has to be the best hatch back on the market. The build is solid, cheap to run, performance is not at all bad and the drive is comfy. Its stunning looking as standard but as you can see when you do a bit of moddin they can look fabulous.Oct 04, 2008

I love my VW...!!
I've owned it for about 2.5 years, having bought it new. It's never skipped a beat. The performance of the 2.0TDI engine is more than adequate, with ample torque available from quite low in the rev range. Build quality is OK (built in South Africa)... there's one occasional squeak in the dash that bugs me a little, and a whistle from the top left of the windscreen when going faster than 100km/h.
Interior styling is functional and efficient... typical German. I really like how all controls are backlit, and there is also a subtle red cabin light... a nice touch. It's a cut above the boring plastic interiors of my previous cars.
My Golf is a fun drive, doesn't mind being chucked around a bit, and gives just a hint of understeer when driving near the upper edges of grip.
The best bit is the fuel economy... which is sublime!! I regularly get average figures like 6.0 L/100 on a mixed city / highway cycle. Diesel is a little bit more expensive in Oz, but considering that alot of new cars need premium unleaded... The reduced consumption is definately worth it I think.Jul 10, 2008

Cam Plug replacement & Thermostat
Just recieved a quote from a mechanic for $1,400. He said changing the cam plug alone would cost $700 because he needs to remove the camshaft cover to get to it. He said it's about a 6 hour job. He also saod my engine is running too cool and we need to change the thermostat along with the evap purge valve. My question is twofold: 1) is it so difficult to work on golf engines that multiple other parts need to be removed to get to the cam plug and thermostat? 2) Is this quote i recieved excessive?
