Adding a pickup to a crossover would get you something close to the 2005 Subaru Baja, a compact all-wheel drive pickup based on a Legacy platform -- in this case, an open bed replaces the enclosed cargo area. There are few changes to the 2005 Baja. It gets another power outlet in the center console, and the Turbo options add on a hard cover for the bed. There are two trims in the Baja lineup. The Sport features a 2.5-liter, 165-hp flat-4 engine, and the Turbo has a turbocharged version at 210-hp. Both are standard with a 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic. The four-door pickup comes standard with ABS brakes, dual front airbags, roof rails, a sunroof, power features, and keyless entry. On the Turbo, you can get extras like heated leather seats and a power driver's seat. Rear seats can be folded and configured to allow more cargo space. The bed is only 3 feet long, but an optional extension increases that to 5 feet. The 2005 Baja is aimed at youthful outdoorsy types interested in active sports, camping, or just cruising the back roads. Owners say the AWD is outstanding in snow or sand, and the turbo engine is peppy and fast. Handling and cornering are tight, much easier than an actual pickup truck. Complaints mention the lack of options, severely limited rear legroom, and a noticeable response lag when shifting into first gear.

I loved this!! She carried me on long, regular trips to visit elderly relatives. ( older than I and I’m a senior myself) she carried me
Over hill and dale for my farm work, she pulled my little T@b trailer on camping trips, she carried junk to the junkyard Ans plants from the plant nursery. And did so beautifully without a minute of trouble. Now my granddaughter is driving it to her work as a camp counselor. What a Brilliant Car - eer! It has a very smooth ride and extremely comfortable seats. It handles extremely well, smooth manual shifting. It also handled a sudden severe snowstorm with no sliding and didnt get stuck. Highly recommend this vehicle. Its fun to drive! Jan 14, 2021

I like everything about this car/truck except that it is a turbo and not very economical to drive. I would prefer a Toyota Corolla because I have no need for a truck and the Corolla is smaller and has better fuel efficiency. There are no noises or blind spots and maintenance costs have only been the yearly inspections and check-ups, new tires and a new battery. This is an extremely safe car, handles all weather conditions easily and is a blast to drive. She needs a younger owner who will appreciate the quick acceleration. The exterior has a few scratches and one small dent. The interior is black leather in perfect condition and shows very little wear.Aug 12, 2013

subaru has safety, reliability and quality, and with the Baja they have extreme practicality, versatility and usefulness. Baja never let us down, and we used it for moving our whole house worth of stuff when we moved. They should still make them! It is a right sized Avalanche!Dec 18, 2012

Build quality and reliability are great. No issues and odometer reads 123K+. It isn't a turbo and acceleration is sluggish, but it will get you up to speed on the interstate ramp. Feels solid at all speeds I have driven it at. Obviously it has great utility. I have hauled a 16' garage door on top and sheet rock in the back. It doesn't have a 4'x8' bed, but is good for most casual hauling. Where it really shines is in bad weather. Short of black ice it hangs onto the road like a squirrel on a tree in a breeze. Absolutely AWESOME when the weather is pushing everyone else off the road.Nov 20, 2009

Very versitle. Not recommended for more than two people on long trips. Only seats 4 (back seat has a console as well). Bed hauls more than you would expect. I got a soft car topper to put in the bed for long trips for luggage. Car would fishtail easy.Aug 16, 2009

When we decided to go test drive one, I was very sceptical. Owning a Dodge Hemi p/u and looking to trade in a V-8 Ford Explorer, we were no strangers to speed.
We got in, and the sales rep told us "go check it out" and went backin the building.
Needless to say, once we were far enough down the road from the dealer we let the right foot do the talking. I was taken aback at the rate of accelleration.
The fit the finish, the solid sounding door and tailgate, all felt like a very well built machine. I have always wanted all wheel drive (living in Houston TX, possibly the 3rd rainiest place on earth) it seemed like a good time to jump in and give Subauru a go.
2 years and 29K miles later, my wife has no qualms about telling me she still loves her Baja, and is in no mood to give it up.
I was so impressed with Subaru, their dealer, there service et.al. I bought a used Legacy wagon (non turbo) for my daily driver. As I drive 100 miles a day just back and fort to work, it is much easier on the pocket book than the Big Dawg Hemi Dodge (but I still have it for days when I feel the need for speed).Apr 19, 2007

Problems getting car to stay running when hot
When cold, my Baja will start & run great & will have no problems at all. if I shut it off (like to get fuel) and the engine is still hot, it will start but die immediately & will do this after I try it several times. Sometimes if I try to hit the gas pedal I can get it to stay running longer but it still dies. It will only start up and run after it cools off a little. Last time it took about 20 minutes for it to cool off enough so I could get it to start & stay running. Other than that it runs great. What could be wrong with it?
