2004 Subaru Baja Preview summaryImage

The 2004 Subaru Baja got a little more fun to drive this year, with the addition of a turbo version of the 2.5-liter H4 engine. While the naturally aspirated gets 165-hp, the turbo hits 210-hp with 235 ft-lbs of torque. Both are offered with AWD. When paired with a 5-speed manual, you get continuous AWD, and with the new 4-speed automatic, you get Active electronic AWD.

Also new this year is a stiffer suspension that raises ground clearance to just over eight inches. This means better off-road driving, though off-road is probably best defined as beach or dirt road driving. There are two trims, Sport and Turbo, and both come standard with foglights, ABS brakes, dual front airbags, and a nice array of features, including power windows and locks, leather seats, keyless entry, a sunroof, and a CD player. The Turbo adds a 6-CD player and leather wheel and shifter. A new hood scoop lets everyone know the 2004 Baja has got some fun get-up-and-go to it.

The 2004 Baja fits four passengers, with the rear seats folding forward and flat for up to 77 inches of cargo space. An extender on the pickup bed increases bed length from 41 to 66 inches, and with the seats down, you get almost 90 inches of cargo length. A bedliner, bars, and hooks help with stowage, and a roof rack with crossbars can hold any props needed for outdoor fun. Owners love the cargo versatility, and the extra turbo power is much appreciated. The Baja has great maneuverability and car-like handling, making it fun to drive on the open roads or in the city. There is some turbo lag, and drivers say it needs more interior space for passenger comfort. The non-turbo engine feels underpowered, and the two-tone styling is not a big hit.

Love the flexibility! It’s a fun lil beach car in the summer, performs really well with snowshoes in the winter and does a lot of things well. Finding a bed Extender was a god send! Wherever I take it I am asked when is Subaru bringing this model back? I honestly wish they would.Jan 15, 2023

Great car with great looks, as usual Subaru quality with Subaru performance, built in the USA. Gas mileage is fair 28 MPG HWY 21 City. Turbo charged engine provide the power when you need it with good a mileage to back it up. It's what make this Subaru fun to drive.Feb 13, 2013
