The more things change, the more they stay the same. That pretty much describes the 2005 Porsche 911, which received a redesign that combined both a sleek, contemporary, more aerodynamic style with a bit of a throwback look to the 911s of the 1960s. Under that sleek skin, though, Porsche made more wide-ranging changes. The 2005 Porsche 911 received more powerful engines, a revamped interior and improvements in the the dashboard, seats, steering, suspension, brakes and transmission. The result was a superior sports car with handling, responsiveness and power that are among the best in the automotive world, in a package that, unlike many exotics and supercars, is ultimately designed to be driven daily.
The 911 model lineup for 2005 could essentially be divided into coupes and convertibles (or cabriolets, for the purists). The Carrera was the base model, while the Carrera S added a more powerful engine. A Turbo S model was also available, although it was packaged in the previous platform (officially, the 996, as opposed to the new models' 997 designation).
The base Carrera models (coupe and convertible) are powered by a 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine that produces 325 horsepower, while the Carrera S models come with a new 3.8-liter 6-cylinder that pumps out 355 horsepower. The Turbo models are equipped with a 3.6-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine that produces 444 horsepower.
A 6-speed manual transmission is standard for all 911 models, and a 5-speed automatic Tiptronic transmission, with a gate that enables the driver to shift manually, is available as an option.
Features for the 911 include all the standard amenities, such as air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, leather seats, cruise control, a stereo sytem with a CD player and dual front, side and curtain airbags, as well as an Active Suspension Management system, variable ratio steering, traction control and antilock disc brakes.

The 997.1 is a great basic Carrera. RWD, 6 speed manual, and has the Sport Chrono option for the twisties. The Carrera S would also be a great option if you want a traditional Porsche 911 which is what I wanted. Apr 10, 2022

The 2005 Porsche 911 Carerra S Chrono sport package with tiptronic is an amazing ride. Normal mode feels luxurious and smooth, like a symphony is playing while you drive. However if you want power and are in the mood to move aggressively, click the sport mode button and you are on a whole new level of sport performance. The ride is exhilarating, and acceleration is second to none. Ill never drive anything but a Porsche again. Highly recommend for the sports car enthusiast. Feb 02, 2022

Major fault of this car is the IMS/RMS bearing failure. If the factory bearings have not been replaced, the engine could have a catastrophic failure. It does not happen in all cases but Porsche people try to stay away from the Carrera. The Carrera S has a different engine.Jun 28, 2020

Love driving the car, sometimes forget how powerful it is until I get a chance to find some open road. Get compliments on the car every I go in it. Great car with a wonderful sound system in it with 13 speakers, sounds like your in the middle of the band. I have not done any track days in it but I bet it would be a lot of fun to do!!Nov 15, 2014

Not much to dislike, except maybe the Navigation input, somewhat tricky at first but once you do it, it's a cake walk. The exceptional pro to this vehicle is the Manual to Auto mode with the 5 spd Tiptronic transmission - fun down shifting to hear the revs and even funner up shifting to hear the wind racing by you.Nov 07, 2012

One of the most desirable cars on the planet, powerful, poised and engineered like a meschersmidt. A daily driver super car that exceeds expectations at so many levels it sounds trite...really, what virtue hasn't been extold of this legendary car? Instead, let's talk about the real cost of ownership...owning a boxster, 911 or other Porsche product is a step across a line that is difficult to withdraw from...can you ever be happy with a mustang or camaro again? This personal shift in paradigm is only exacerbated by the 911 turbo. Yes, that's right....the real cost of ownership isn't the price or the maintenance; it's the cost of replacing it! Sounds like the thunder with its titanium exhaust including mufflers and air intake cooling system. Goes like a jet once you pas the 3000rpm. Drinks like a fish when you open the throttles but can also be driven with 10ltrs on 100km. Oil consumption is normal with less than 1ltr per 1000km. looks stock but for those that know about this car will notice the details that where modified in a manner that it appears stock.Nov 09, 2009

Waited 25 years for this, it better be good. It is refreshing to find Porsche has stayed away from all the unnecessary sophistications - ie. you don't have to remove 10 things everytime you wanted 1 thing changed. It also doesn't employ rubber bushings to excess, so the driving feel is very direct and informative. The definitely superior chassis stiffness is very noticeable and works in harmony with the suspension. Saving the best for last, the engine, despite being old school (ie. an evulotion from the GT1 engine from the '80s, still has no direct injection, individual intake throttles, etc.), still deliver all its 450 hp in such explosive manner such that you will forgive the slower throttle response (vs. modern BMW) or smoothness, after all, it is more like a race engine with true dry-sump design, and a oil-cooled block (but water-cooled heads)! One more thing worth mentioning: the hand painted body work is just flawless, and the material used in the interior (ie. full grain leather, wool matts/carpets, etc.), despite lacking in precision in how they are put together, are of top quality somewhat deserving of the car's high ticket price. I was offered a short drive by a our friend Alan 2 years ago and having always loved Porsches, jumped at the chance.
Now please bear in mind this was something I had wanted to do since I first saw a '80s 964 turbo I was in heaven.
Now Alan isn't the tallest of chaps and I'm 6'2" and the seat wasn't able to go down far enough for me to stop my knees from rubbing the steering wheel, but we percevered and it was O.K.
The suspension was a bit hard but no harder than an Audi and the brakes were a bit hard to push to make it stop handling was just mind bending.
There is a 1/4 mile straight of lovely grippy double lane black stuff near us and when Alan told me to floor it from a stand still I did it was just superb, seamless acceleration all the way upto, well that would be telling wouldn't it.
I loved every second of it and want one NOW!!

it's fast and has a great color. The motor is greatc and it has hydrolics that can come off. It has place for two people so it is light and not heavy so it can go faster.IT has a huge trunk to put things that you buy. It has black windows so noone can see you insideAug 11, 2008
