Write a reviewMercedes has added a diesel variant to the E-Class lineup. Unfortunately, the E320 CDI is not available in California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York or Vermont, due to emissions restrictions. An engine upgrade is expected for the base E320 midway through the year, and a sport package will also be added. The Mercedes scheduled maintenance program is no longer a complimentary service.
The E-Class is available in eight trim levels, configured through two body styles, three engines, and two drive trains. Mercedes offers the E-Class as a sedan or a wagon, with rear- or all-wheel drive, powered by a V6, V8. The Diesel is only available as a RWD sedan, and the V8 wagon is AWD only.
The 320 models come standard with all the bells and whistles one might expect to find in a Mercedes, highlighted by the TeleAid assistance system, dual-zone automatic climate controls, steering wheel audio controls, leather upholstery, 10-way power front seats, and a memory system (front seats, mirrors, steering wheel).
The 320 models house a 3.2 liter V6, which generates 221 horsepower. The CDI diesel 320 gets a turbocharged 3.2 liter inline six, good for 201 horsepower. Both 320 engines are mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift gate. The 500s upgrade to a 5.0 liter V8, making 302 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. The 4Matic 500 uses the five-speed automatic, while the rear-wheel drive models get a new seven-speed version.
The current generation E-Class borrows many styling cues from the full size S-Class. The results are a more dramatic exterior shape and an elegant interior presentation. The E-Class is more expensive than its mid-size competitors, but this lineup is available with a AWD and a powerful V8. This Mercedes also boasts advanced safety features like electronic braking, which improves the communication between the brakes and active safety systems.
Test drivers expressed great satisfaction with the E's ride - an ideal blend of cushioning and control. An E55 AMG is available for the enthusiasts, but that sedan is categorized by itself.

I have owned numerous MB vehicles over the years. This has been my favorite sedan. The mpg for highway driving is an amazing 37mpg. Interior is high quality and still looks new. I always feel safe driving a MB. This is my first diesel, but will not be my last. They are durable and get great gas mileage.May 23, 2015

Excellent vehicle for long trips. Fast, reliable car with great gas milage. But once a year it needs maintenance that usually costs $1000 per visit to the dealer if nothing is wrong. Mercedes headquarters will not back an owner if a dispute arises involving a warrantee claim.Dec 02, 2014

A powerful beast, very rare to find , the supercharged motor growls everytime you touch the gas, fully loaded tons of features. I highly recommend any one to buy an e55, only cons it has is the cost to maintain still highly recommended.Oct 26, 2014

I love my E500 great power/speed. You have the luxury when needed. Great overall car. Just have to do your routine maintenance of normal wear and tear parts. If not it will break down. Certain parts are designed to eventually wear out because of the high speeds.Jul 28, 2014

I like the sound of this car, the looks are classic and this particular year . It was the most powerful car I've ever driven. You shouldn't ever need all the power it can deliver but it's there if you ever do . Initially , i use to be a big fan of Audi as i owned one , heavy weight and great dynamics i thought could not get better than Audi. But once i sat in E500 i just loved interior and bought it without second thought. It never turned down my expectations. Once i was driving in New England Storm i took exit for gas and got stuck in 3 foot snow. But i now my merc can handle it like nothing , i switched to Sport mode and press the pedal it jumped of the heavy snow like a tiger everybody around just baffled as they shoveling hard to get their car out of snow. The car as a lot of torque when you need it. Handles like no other sedan and ride is by far the best out there. You can set it for a sport ride which is very tight or a soft ride that lets car float going down the road. Very roomy inside for 4 adults plenty of leg and headroom. I bought this used car as a cheap and cheerful load-lugger for shopping, baby commuting etc. It has far exceeded my expectations, with a very high level of factory options. The engine bay is as new, and just about everything on the car worked perfectly despite having lead a fairly tough life before my ownership.
I have had to change engine and transmission mounts and a few bushes under the car, but otherwise it has been faultless for such a high mileage car.Apr 09, 2013

This is a pretty and fun car. The color is a little different from silver or gray and is beautiful. The interior has wood trim and a panorama roof. There are screens on the rear windows that help keep the car cool in the summer. It is comfortable and very speedy. I have had one expense for a hose and had to have a battery. No other issues. Nice record.
I like the car around town because it is easy to park and I like it on the highway because it is so comfortable and rides like a dream.

The Mercedes is quite a fun car, but Mercedes should have tuned the 5.0L for
more than 303 hp. Its starting to appear a little bit dated, and making me want to
give it the 2007 facelift. Nice braking, 4-matic makes it easy to drive. The Airmatic
and the 20s tend to make it a little numb when pushing it in the corners. The ESP
inserts itself flawlessly when it is needed. Decent mileage for the engine size, good
power, but like I mentioned, some V6s are being produced with more power,

Car is stylish and refined. Fun to drive. City mileage is less than advertised but on the highway the gas mileage is very good for it's size and class. Requirement for premium gasoline drove the cost of ownership up during the summer when gas was above $4 a gallon.
On the downside, the electronic brakes vary too often from too firm to too soft. They also squeak with extended city driving. Air conditioning temp setting a little quirky to get used to. Steering wheel based troubleshooting and info dashboard is terrible.Dec 23, 2008

Performance is amazing, accels to 100kph in 6.8 seconds from a stop. Handling is good, can make very sharp turns thanks to ESP and Traction Control. No repairs. Beautiful outside and inside. Expensive car but other then that not to expensive to maintain. Very fun to drive, luxury yet a powerhouse.Dec 06, 2008

A car of the family, the '05 E500 is one of the most comfortable highway cruisers I have ever driven. But put your foot down and it turns into a ferocious beast with its 5.0 L V8 boasting 302 HP and 339 lb./ft. torque, this thing will snap your neck off. The wheels break loose almost too easily when you want them to and you can step the back out quite a bit before the ESP turns off the power.

Test drove this car last year. Never bought it as it was simply too much money for a sedan. The performance was, however, impressive. Quick acceleartion, tight steering, very elegant interior. The real draw-back was that it did not have all wheel drive and costs a fortune. For less money and with all wheel drive (if you live where it snows), you can get an Audi Rs6 or a carrera 4s - much more fun to drive and both have all wheel drive.Oct 25, 2006
