2005 Lexus SC Preview summaryImage

For 2005, the new Lexus SC 430 received improved shock absorbers and a more thorough navigation system. This new system featured improved screen graphics and layout, and a larger DVD database. The Lexus Link roadside assistance system was no longer offered in 2005. While the SC had been categorized as a sports coupe, there had been some considerable debate through the years over the true nature of the car. The more powerful SCs (400 and 430) featured very potent engines, but excessive bulk and luxury-tuned suspension may have dampened the sports car image. So sports or luxury? Few could argue that the coupe wasn't a fine combination of both. When the new generation of the SC appeared in 2001, it had added a larger and more powerful engine also utilized by the flagship LS sedan. The two engine option of the first generation was no longer available, as the six cylinder SC was abandoned. Drivers were left with a 4.3 liter V-8, which gave the SC 300 horsepower and 325 pound feet of torque. The coupe was well controlled: it accelerated to 60 mph in just over six seconds, and then returned to a stop in 121 feet. However, the large engine and 3840 pound curb weight comprised fuel economy. To its credit, the SC 430 was really not any less efficient than the lighter and less powerful SC 400. It was good for 18 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway. The 20 gallon tank was quite large for a sports coupe. Despite some nagging criticism of the SC's road manners (not sporty enough), owners found what they expected from a Lexus. The ride was soft but responsive enough, and that seemed to be what most Lexus buyers were seeking.
